Superheroes Anonymous

I'm rereading the books, and decided to go ahead and launch a trope page. It's a fairly standard superpower story, albeit a bit more tinged towards the romance side of things. The second book turns all of the plot of the first on its head with its revelations.

Is that the one where she gets kidnapped by the supervillain who it turns out is really a good guy whose private island is a Mary Suetopia and all the heroes are just murderers with good publicity and the resident Superman expy is a Basement-Dweller? 'Cause I read that one. It was shit. For reasons previously established.

No, this is the one about Hostage Girl. Some idiot villain thought a girl was dating a superhero, word got around, and by the time the story starts she's been kidnapped more times than she can count. She's a local "celebrity," to the point that when a villain attacks a coffee shop she's at, some jackass throws her out, assuming they're looking for her.

Don't remember the one you're talking about. Is it D-List Supervillain? I didn't get that far in that one.

That doesn't sound like Confessions of a D-Class Supervillain either. That one more or less comes down to "People become villains for different reasons and some are redeemable. People become heroes for different reasons and some may turn villainous" and I don't remember any private islands.

But yes, the basic plotline of Superheroes Anyonymous is that Gail Godwin is essentially the go-to hostage in Chicago due to the superhero Blaze (Flying Brick) always saving her and eventually it turns out that it all started because on her first day in town, she threw a beer bottle at a supervillain, Sykik, and he, out of spite, devoted some time to convincing everyone to start targeting her. Eight months after Blaze skips town for Miami, she's kidnapped by Dr. Mobius, who injects her with Mobium, which would require regular injections to keep her healthy, giving Dr. Mobius leverage on Blaze. In actuality, it gives her superpowers (and cancer, which her Healing Factor keeps in check) and she starts training to be a superhero while starting a relationship with Blaze, who turns out to be someone nearer to her than she thought.

In the second book, it all gets turned on its head. Imprisoned for suspicion of involvement in the death of her mentor, she's broken out of jail and proceeds to learn that Mobium is part of a government super-soldier contract and is intended to give powers. The kindly doctor who's been helping her to adapt to her situation is an early case of the treatment, and is looking to eliminate the main group of superheroes so that he can market Mobium to the government. Dr. Mobius injected Gail in an attempt to educate the superhero community about the dangers of the Super Serum and is actually not too bad of a guy for a Mad Scientist.

In short (sorry for the huge block of spoilers), the good guys are generally good. The bad guys are generally bad, but some of them are Well Intentioned Extremists suffering from a form of mental illness called Villain Syndrome where they have a dream to fix the world and are willing to burn it down to make it happen. And there's at least one sinister conspiracy that's opposed by a more benign one.
