I don't think the writing ever declined all that much, but then, I skipped Seasons 8 and 9.
Gameplay and Story Integration then. Remember the Very Special Episode when Josh finally had it up to here with Drake and kicked him out of his life? Drake began to absorb Josh's Butt-Monkey status from that point.

Remember the end of the episode where he accepted Drake back into his life and the Reset Button was hit after that? Yeah.

Courtney from Total Drama Island (this one so much, this girl was a total bitch about it from the start and she got worse as time went on), Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons (when she is used as a Author Tract). There is other numerous examples but I found those 2 some of the worst at least in animation (Cindy Vortex from Jimmy Neutron, Kim Possible, are other examples albeit not bad ones)
My problem moreso then anything else is that the character type is just overdone at this point and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth nowadays as I have seen all of what they could do with it. Live-Action TV has it even worse then animation though. The worst appearances of this type of character appear there quite a lot.

You say that as if you actually watch the new episodes. I lost interest years ago, only watching a new episode out of curiosity, and it was exactly the same as when I left it.
