Requiem for Battle

Trojan is a 1986 side-scrolling Hack and Slash action game made by CAPCOM, using a format similar to Kung Fu Master from two years ago (and incidentally sharing a director, Takashi Nishiyama) but now recycled in a post-apocalyptic setting.

In the aftermath of a nuclear war, the souls of warlords from the past have been brought back to life, destroying what remains of civilizations, with Achilles (yes, that Achilles) ruling the world. You are among the survivors of the takeover, and adopting the name "Hero Trojan", you must battle enemies ranging from gladiators to pirates to punks.

The game later has a re-release on the NES with additional features, including a Versus Mode for two-player.

Trojan contain examples of:

  • Adaptation Expansion: The NES re-release. Its stages are longer, you're granted extra power-ups and there are hidden rooms absent in the arcade release.
  • After the End: The game is set after some unspecified future in the aftermath of a nuclear war, and the souls of warlords from the past have returned to take over humanity in the chaos.
  • The Apunkalypse: Most of your enemies you slice up left and right, besides bearing all sorts of deforminites, also looks like extras from some Mad Max films.
  • Breath Weapon: The Armandillon enemies can inexplicably breath fireballs, a trait none of the enemies use.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Several low-level enemies will use spiked maces as weapons. As does the boss, Muscular.
  • Cut and Paste Environments: The game does this rather frequently, though it might be excused given its age. For instance, the third stage: you travel down multiple floors via elevator, killing mooks on each stage, until you reach the level's basement. You then find an exit, and travel upwards via elevator, through multiple floors, all of which are recycled areas from the first half.
  • Dual Boss: One of the last levels, where you fight two Iron Arm enemies.
  • Hat of Flight: Some enemies wear helicopter-helmets allowing them to hover above you and drop exploding projectiles.
  • Heal Thyself: Grab a flying heart to restore your life energy.
  • Land Mine Goes "Click!"/One-Hit Kill: The fourth stage, set in some ruins, has multiple landmines that cost you a life if you step on them.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: You carry a shield in this game alongside your trusty sword, which works against most projectiles, even exploding ones. Provided if you managed to take cover on time...
  • Meaningful Name: You're the Hero Trojan, and the Final Boss is called Achilles.
  • One-Word Title/Market-Based Title: Just "Trojan", but known in Japan as Tatakai no Banka, which means "A Requiem for Battle".
  • Power Fist: The Iron Arm enemies, as the name states, wear steel gauntlets for punching you up close.
  • Rolling Attack: The Armandillon enemies wear curved armor resembling pillbugs, and can contort themselves into balls and roll at you with a tackle.
  • Spring Jump: While your jumping range is not too different from other games of its kind, there are areas where you can find a red, glowing neon "JUMP" surface on the floors. Jumping on them will send you to the top of the screen.
  • Sword Fight: The Final Boss, Achilles, uses a sword like yours. With the subsequent battle a Mirror Boss for the most part.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: Goblin is a boss who exclusively throws exploding projectiles on you until he's cut down.
  • A Winner Is You: What you get after defeating Achilles, though the game gets a pass due to its age.
