Chloe was laying with her head in her arms, trying to get over the drunk state she was in, while listening to the others talk about treasure hunting. Of course she had her fair of bad luck at finding things, but most of the time she managed to find some pretty nice things and even had a secret hideout to keep all her stash. She was trained to search and steal treasure all her life by her family and who could resist the unknown possibilities of the frontier?

She looked over as the strangest figure of everyone that was sitting around her explained how they had a team to help them find things and took out a unique looking pendant. Her eyes widened and she found herself leaning over to get a better look at it. Rare artifacts were a bit of a weakness of hers and she suddenly wished she had some money to possibly buy the item off the person. "As for what I have for treasures -hic-... well you saw my nice sword. The rest of my treasure is hidden somewhere where no one but -hic- me will find it." she explained, puffing her chest proudly and pointing a thumb to herself, "Treasure hunting can be fun if you -hic- love adventure and riches." Especially if you are looking for someone along the way. she thought to herself.

"Can you imagine an imaginary menagerie manager imagining managing an imaginary menagerie?"

Damn, I wish I could draw these things. The descriptions aren't great.

Kito crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair. "Suela, much of what we understand about our home universe relies on the proven existence of souls. What you're telling us simply cannot be reconciled with our scientific knowledge. I don't think this discussion could really go anywhere."

Cyrus gave a soft bark of agreement.

"As for weapons...." He stuck his hand into the satchel and took out a metal and glass object that was shaped like a shorter, more blocky rifle with a very fat muzzle. The glass chamber was currently empty, but when Kito turned a dial on the side of the rifle's butt, it was filled with swirling flames. "Cyrus's magic is very precise, so he builds machines for situations that don't require a lot of subtlety, such as brutally murdering people. He does that a lot more often than you might think he does. This also shoots electricity and he's working on a variation that can also be loaded with small grenades. It's powered by magic, but thanks to Cyrus's engineering, this device saves a lot of energy."

He turned the dial back to its original position and laid the gun on the table, clearly displaying the various dials and meters on the butt that gave temperature and magic level readings and allowed the user to adjust the power level. Next was a larger but similar-looking device that had two removable metal canisters instead of a glass chamber. "Just a fancy chemical thrower," was Kito's only explanation for this one.

"And finally—"

This time, when Kito's arm came out of the satchel, it was inside a huge metal object that went halfway up his forearm and extended his reach by about six inches. When he flipped a switch on the base, the last foot extended and it became a sharp cone with ridges spiraling up the sides. "In my opinion, this thing is a bit ridiculous. It generates electricity and does... very fun things when you turn it on and stab people with it. He can switch from one weapon to the next quite rapidly, actually. It takes magic and lots of practice. Oh, and go ahead and pick something up. They're much lighter than they look. But if you value your lives and the condition of this building, don't touch a single button. Don't turn a single dial. Just. Don't."

(Railway Station-> Washington)

A teenaged girl walked off the train. That in itself wasn't unusual. What was unusual was that she walked off through the walls of the train car, not the open doorway. She winced as she passed through. Must have underestimated the amount of iron in there.

A one-eared black cat came out of the train as well, stopping at his owner's heels. One could almost assume that the cat was trained... if they had never owned a cat before. "You know, Anne, there's a reason they used to call it an iron horse."

Anne sighed and flipped off the cat. She adjusted the clasp of her white cloak, then checked her purse to see if all her necessary possessions were inside. They were, so she walked towards the main street, the cat following behind. Seeing what looked like a high-end tavern, she went inside, hoping to find something good on the menu.

Forward, boys! For God's sake, forward!

Suela looked at Kito with the disappointed exasperation of a woman who had heard variations on that phrase far too many times. The worst part was that Kito and Cyrus were nonetheless, as far as Suela could tell, very competent, rational, thoughtful individuals whom she still overall quite liked. She supposed they'd have never heard of Ziven Debates, though, and lacking Ziven's rhetorical gifts, she didn't feel she was up to repeating them. "I'm not convinced," she finally said, "but... I suppose it's not important right now."

Brin breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Suela decide to leave it be. Instead she looked over the weapons, grimacing slightly at the lightning-based one and rubbing the scar on her temple marking where she'd been on the wrong end of a very similar weapon. Great, she thought to herself, we've got our very own Sato. Let's hope he's more like Asami than Hiroshi.

Krul shot Suela a cold glare. Matters concerning the existence of the soul is a sensitive one especially for Songbirds like Lia, whose way of magic primarily deals with communicating with, basically, the soul of the land (he had heard it referred to as such by many a Songbird). Denying its existence was akin to invalidating Lia's entire purpose. But Lia shook her head slightly, a smile on her face. Krul, who then knew she had no intent to start an argument, decided to let the matter slide.

He returned his attention to the weapons Kito (who had become quite talkative, against his expectations) had described in graphic detail: A magical rifle, much like an upscaled Blazecrystal launcher. The flamethrower was intriguing. Krul understood the concept of throwing streams of fire into enemies quite easily, although he had a hard time imagining the process that enables so without magic. The last weapon was large, but left a weak impression on Krul for some reason.

"Intriguing. I suppose the presence of these weapons will allow us to rest assured, perhaps even against whatever we will encounter in our expedition for the dead gods' remains." Krul said.

On another conversation, Lia was barely able to resist putting her hand out to touch those 'portal devices' Suela had spoken about. Her story might slightly sound like Suela was being scammed, but this 'Qaisar' person sounded like the real deal, and Lia was sure that Suela (who she saw a bit of her elder sister in) had good reason to believe that person. "So you were here against your will..." Lia said, her low, yet oddly smooth voice barely audible. "I suppose there's no harm in trying, then. You know where the remains are located, right?" Lia said.

Hoshi impatiently tapped her foot on the floor as she waited for her relief to arrive, eavesdropping on the near-by 'treasure hunters' as she did so. "What a weird conversation." She commented, idly. "What a weird bunch of people." Then she groaned and put her head to the table. "I'm so bored!" She said. "I don't know how you two can just sit there when there's adventures happening all around us!"

"We're not here for adventures, Hoshi." Said Miyuki, a little bit annoyed.

"Sure we are!" Replied Hoshi. "At least, we will be, once Rin and Maya finally show up!"

Hana chuckled. "You two make quite the pair." She said. "But Hoshi's right, Miyuki. I want you to go have fun once the others arrive." Miyuki's usual frown got a little more severe at this news, she was obviously disappointed, but Hana continued. "I know you don't like these kinds of places, but it's good for you to try something new once in a while." She put down her glass and reached over to touch Miyuki's hand. "At least keep Hoshi out of trouble, okay?"

Though somewhat reluctant, Miyuki nodded. "Ryōkai." She said.

Hana smiled and leaned back in her chair. "Good soldier." She said.

Almost as if on cue, two girls walked into the bar, dressed in uniforms exactly like Hoshi and Miyuki's. The four of them had that uncanny, almost-but-not-quite sisterly similarity between them; the same red eyes, the same skin tone, roughly the same height... But, much like Hoshi and Miyuki, their hair was the easiest way to tell them apart, aside from their weapon of choice.

One girl had turquoise hair, short and very neatly combed so that it all seemed to flow away from her face, and she carried a broadsword at her hip. The other had long, brown hair - a fairly ordinary colour compared to her compatriots - that was tied back in a braided ponytail, though it was shorter than Hoshi's. She had a longsword strapped across her back.

Hoshi and Miyuki stood as the new girls approached, and saluted them as they walked up to the table. The new girls returned the salute, and everyone's hands were barely down before Hoshi hugged the both of them. "Rin! Maya!" She said, gleefully. "You're just in time to save me from being bored to death!"

"You're only supposed to use codenames in public." Muttered the turquoise-haired girl, struggling out of Hoshi's grasp.

"Aw come on, Rin!" Replied Hoshi. "Don't be like that! At least you're happy to see me, right Maya?"

The brown-haired girl, Maya, just smiled and said nothing.

"No more dawdling, you two." Said Hana, looking over at Hoshi and Miyuki. "Go find something interesting."

The four girls all saluted each other again, and Hoshi and Miyuki walked off while Rin and Maya took their seats.

Hoshi walked right up to Suela and Brin's busy table, filled with confidence and a lust for adventure. Miyuki walked up next to her, but stayed a step behind, and crossed her arms.

"Heya!" Said Hoshi, glancing between Suela and Brin. "You guys still looking for help? Because we're willing and able!" She said, grinning. "I'm Hoshi, by the way. My friend here is Miyuki." She looked around at the others. "Nice to meet you all!"

Miyuki said nothing, taking the time to eye the gear on the table and look over others, trying to gauge what they might be capable of.

"Oh, also," Said Hoshi, after a moment. "When would we be leaving? Because there's a couple of things I want to pick up first."

[Main Street -> The Washington]

Walking at a leisurely pace down the main street of the small frontier town, was a tall, muscular and very dark skinned man with a head of short, wiry black hair along with a short black beard. Slanted amber yellow eyes rested on either side of a large and pointed nose and his small mouth grinned in curiosity.

He wore a strange combination of armor and cloth. His gauntlets looked as if a glove had been attached to an short sleeve of white fur, with leather wrappings holding a piece of iron to the whole thing and his boots appeared as if a regular pair of fur-lined boots had their own leather wrappings holding the same kind of iron to them as well. Oddly, his chest piece seemed much more out of place, appearing as if a pair of iron shoulder-pads had been added onto a regularly sleeveless cuirass and held by pieces of leather and with white fur lining to prevent chaffing. His thighs were protected by iron strapped to the sides by more leather and a piece of cloth rested between them. He bore a shield, which had many twisting patterns and four raised bumps near its center. Around his head, a blue cloth was wrapped around, only his face but covering up most of his head and neck. At his side behind his shield arm, was a curve scimitar with a golden hilt and a brown handle. A small satchel also rested on his back, meant to carry whatever supplies felt necessary and beneath all his armor, a cross like necklace rested daintily.

His continued his slow pace through the town, quietly observing the looks he was getting from the locals, not that he truly cared.

Eventually, he came to stand outside The Washington and put his hand to his chin as he thought. A strange name for him, but he felt the need for a drink and any place would be good. He pushed the door open and noticed the number of people who had gathered near one table.

Smiling to himself as approached, grabbing a chair and turning it so his head rested on the back of the chair, "I do believe I've found where the party's at. Do you mind if I join you?"

The song's tone changed slightly in response to all the attention it was drawing to Saya, picking up something of an expository feel. It was also at that point that it made itself audible to Saya as well.

She didn't reply to the man immediately, instead focusing on listening to the song. After a couple of moments, she deduced that it was telling her about the man currently trying to speak to her. Namely, that although he was strange in ways other than appearance he didn't seem to want to hurt her, and that he was simply curious about it.

"You're right about that," she replied, "I'm sorry if it's bothering you or anything. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot I can do about it except leave the store. It's...sort of beyond my control."

Suela stared at the steadily increasing number of companions. "Eyes and Teeth," she said, "I heard this place attracted the adventurous, but I must say, this is quite a group!" Then, more seriously, she added, "I suppose I have room for you three," she nodded at Hoshi, Miyuki, and swordsman, "but... two, four, six, eight, nine..."

"Quite a number to provision," Brin said. And keep from arguing and tearing each other apart. Anyone other than the flamin' Avatar whipping together a bunch of strangers like this is just asking for trouble. Still, the two warriors she noted earlier looked capable, even if there was something a touch Hundred Years War about their leader's outfit. The swordsman, though not exactly dressed for the climate, seemed capable. Still. "Alright, this is all we can handle. But first, I need to know a bit more about you three."

Leaving Brin to interrogate the newcomers, Suela headed to Lia and said, "I'm going to have to keep the exact location to myself for now. But yes. It's been found in a valley through the mountains. Nobody's gotten close enough to take a look, but Brin knows a reliable seer, and she says it's there." Then, with disconcerting optimism, she added, "plus, nobody who's ever gone to that valley has returned, so that's probably proof something is there! Don't worry, I've done a lot of research, even talked to some Graveyarders, about making sure we do make it back."

Kito put the weapons away and he and Cyrus returned to their proper bodies. There were a few new people at the table now and Cyrus wasn't quite sure what to do, so he returned to his meal. The food and tea were a little too cold now, so he put his hands over them, pictured the energy map that should do the job, and channeled some magic into heating them up. Kito's meal, however, was finished.

The portal thing sounds interesting, doesn't it, Kito?

Indeed. I wonder what its power source is.

Can't count on Suela and Brin trusting me enough to take a look at it once we find it... but if it has anything to do with gods, it probably can't be mathematically explained anyway. He meditatively chewed on a mouthful of hash browns. Did you catch what Suela just said to Lia?

Yes. We'd better be careful, and don't hesitate to bail out. You have other things to worry about.

Cyrus nodded solemnly. A lot of people back home were depending on him. Seems like the idea of souls not existing won't be the strangest thing we encounter today.

Suela didn't completely dismiss the existence of the concept essential to our worldview, if I remember correctly. I believe the exact wording was "useful abstraction" for something mathematical something within the... a person, I suppose.

Huh... Cyrus shifted his chair closer to Suela and Lia. "Suela, I—I thought about what you said earlier, and I just wanted to clarify something. If you were analyzing living people, and you detected... some kind of energy flowing through them, emanating from each blood cell, and each person's energy flowed in different shapes, and the removal of this energy also removed most of their memories and personality, and this energy is indeed tangible magic... what would you call that, and how would your research proceed from there?"

Peggy looked at the artefact in wonder and when Ammolite said that it was retrieved from lava by one of his- their colleagues who was immune to it, she began to wonder if the others hadn't understated how strange things could be out in the multiverse. She had thought Terra Nova strange, but had got used to it. She hoped that she would eventually get used to the strange things she encountered here.

Wolfe turned to Chloe with a cheeky expression on his face. "You mean where no one but you or a member of your family could find it, from what you were saying earlier."

Teri grinned and looked at Chloe. "So you're just here to find treasure, sorta like Indiana Jones?"

Suela positively jumped with excitement. "Their spirit, of course!" she said. "Yes, yes, of course I know about this much, magic wouldn't really function at all without it." Brin shot Cyrus a look of utter befuddlement, clearly unable to understand why he'd given Suela an excuse to get back onto that topic. "Everybody assumed the soul and the spirit were the same," Suela continued, talking so quickly that the local translation magics struggled to keep up, "until Ziven of Zavi argued that the soul is formed by a trinity of body, spirit, and reason. He was attempting to prove the soul's transcendence beyond magic rather than its non-existence as part of the Kykiten Enlightenment's fascinating theory about narrative as the fundamental building block of what we perceive as reality. I think they're utterly and completely wrong, but for the right reasons. Which I'd rather be than right for the wrong reasons." She paused, taking a beat to re-rail her train of thought, and also to breathe. "Anyways, spirit, reason, body, right? An interaction with any one, Ziven argued, can deeply alter the soul, so," here she lowered her voice in a poor imitation of the Kykiten's rumbling bass accent as she quoted Ziven directly, "'any proposed description of the soul which only considers the part of the spirit is fundamentally insufficient.'"

She another took a deep breath, then continued. "Imen of Elashu followed this up with several questions, though he was not curious enough to do anything more than puzzle people at cocktail parties with them. Head trauma and disease can permanently damage one's memories and even personality, yes?" A rhetorical question, with no chance to interject. "An assault upon the spirit, housed within the brain? If so, if you're dead because something destroys your brain, pulping it with a hammer or ruining it with a rotting disease, is their spirit destroyed as well?" A pause, then she hurriedly added, "these aren't actual experiments and sane and decent person would perform, of course." (On the other hand, Suela thought, the Elasane would try them in a heartbeat if their religion didn't require them to execute the necessary mages. With brain-squashing, thanks to Imen.)

Made some edits to better fit Suela's cadence.

Samuel kept his nose out of the girl's business, thanks to someone else already asking. No skin off his back.

The man picked up a back pack, which should prove useful. He picked out the Serenican coins and counted them. Back where he lived, it should be enough. Hopefully the exchange rate was less or equal.

The bald man headed up to the counter. He said his apologies to the worker and gave his coins. Luckily they accepted any currency, though the counter boy hoped that he gave the right amount.

Afterwards, he left the place. He shoved his new supplies in the newly-bought backpack and flung it over his shoulder. He decided earlier that he would go to the bar he passed on the way in.

He looked into the Washington, only to find it very crowded. Too early to be in a well-stocked place, hm. Though the place he chose was named questionably, he went in anyways.

There was only a group, a green person, and a drunken looking woman with a sword on her. He's been in stranger places. Samuel went to sit down at the bar, a good distance away, but still close. He ordered a sandwich, and begun to listen to the present conversation.

He didn't know who Indiana Jones was, but he did quite know a thing about treasure hunting. He commented to the main group, "Isn't that job for wide-eyed lunatics with delusions?" He shifted in his seat. "I'm sorry, but that job didn't turn out well with many people I've heard of."

I hope I handwaved the money thing right.

Lia let out an understanding hum, "So, according to you, the soul is an abstract formed by a whole greater than it parts, which the body, spirit and reason are." Lia said what she understood of it, "That's an interesting way to look at it." she said. She imagined Alba would have points to argue against what Suela said, and will not hesitate to say it.

On the other hand, the place had become really crowded; Krul was having a hard time processing everyone, much less paying attention to Suela's lecture about spirits (not that he knew much about it himself). Because of the nature of the place, not a single individual should and can be carelessly glossed over; to err on the side of caution was never unwise. There are quite a number now gathered around, the latest additions being soldiers, bodyguards, and a curious girl they accompanied, as well as a bearded man whose impression he found hard to place. Slightly earlier, he also caught what Suela said about nobody coming back from the supposed location of this 'dead god remains', his gut feeling told him that going might not be the best option after all. Of course, he also knew Lia wouldn't have any of that.

Krul decided to He spoke to Suela, "The wind is picking up. I suggest we depart at noon; the forest will break the worst of the wind for us." he said. Lia seemed slightly displeased at Krul's words, to which he responded, "At least the wind will cool you off, Astell." he said.

"For the last time, call me Lia." she protested. If not for the amount of company here, she would've sported an immense pout.

Chloe grinned back at Wolfe. "Of course!" she answered back and raised her shot glass as if to salute. The black haired girl turned to Teri with a raised brow. "Who's Indiana Jones?" she asked, her voice slurred as she was still pretty drunk. But before she could get an answer someone else came and sat amongst the group, claiming that treasure hunting was for lunatics.

This made Chloe laugh and she replied with a smirk, "Maybe for the people you know. But you don't know me and my family. I got this sword and who knows what else I'll find in this frontier. I'm looking for the Holy Grail of items, something that no one else has found but is very valuable. And I'm sure it's out there in this world." "Hm... it sounds like... we do work with the same concepts, almost, but the main difference is they're just categorized differently. Unfortunately, the intersection with biology isn't something I'm particularly well-versed in. I work under someone at the Society who specializes in that area, though. I know much of desert exploration and am immune to poison through both the hardiness of my people and some alchemy training." He decided to leave the part about having the soul of a dragon out of the conversation for now.

Azuhl sat up right in his still turned around seat, "Do you have any particular questions about my qualifications?"

"Heard it outside. Across the street." The song didn't quite lilt, didn't quite glide, and swum more than the tri-tone ambiances Tsadro was used to during conversational scenes at the opera, while also not being of any tone. Curious. "Hardly familiar to me."

"Except your tea," Brin pointed out. The main reason Suela was presently so talkative, and able to fit so many words in so little time.

"Only because it sharpens the mind," Suela replied defensively. "And it's absolutely great for when you don't want sleep interrupting your work." Then, back to Lia, "anyways, I've got my own ideas that are different than what I mentioned, but I don't quite have them settled yet. Questions Ziven's school can't answer, but I'm not ready to say I've got better." Then, to Krul, she said, "and quite right. The sky's blue as it ever is, but there could be a storm heading this way. Do they have monsoons here? I can't imagine so. Still, no storm is fun to be stuck in." Then, to Cyrus. "I do wish I could meet the woman you mentioned — oh my, I'd love to ask her about her research into the nature of memory! But..." she cleared her throat. "I suppose all this must be dreadfully boring to an inventor such as yourself."

Since Suela was still doing what she loved, Brin decided to deal with the actual question of getting this ragged, enigmatic band moving. To Krul, she said, "noon. That sounds reasonable." She then turned to the newcomers. "Alright," she said. "You're in. But, Azuhl... we're heading for the forests, not the desert. Though it's pretty scruffy, and you look decent with a blade anyways." Then, "Suela! I'll go get supplies, you can keep talking to your new friends about spirit soul stuff. But you're the one with all the money..." Suela nodded and handed Brin a thick wad of Yoth paper currency that the locals had accepted once it became established it could be traded for gold. She headed out the door, motioning for others — presumably anyone not interested in hearing Suela's continued efforts to pry apart reality with words and numbers — to follow her. She'd get to know those who came with better, do some prying of her own.

[The Washington -> Main Street]

Azuhl left his seat and walked up next to Brin.

"My mistake then," He said, "But for me, when you get right down to it, exploring and surviving in most environments is largely the same," He began to list off a few things using his fingers to count, "Get shelter from the elements, find clean drinking water, search for food that won't kill you, stay away from any animals that will kill you and so forth," he chuckled lightly, "But I'm sure we're all aware of what we will have to face out there to some extent. As for supplies, I'm fully prepared as far as the environment goes."

He walked out the doors of The Washington and awaited the rest of the group.

[The Washington]

"Oh, I wouldn't really call it boring, but—" Cyrus looked a bit sheepish. "I really am more of a machine person, yes. They tend to be more predictable as long as you know what you're doing. I had to study magiphysics in-depth to get to where I am as an engineer, and it is fascinating, but nothing's more fun for me than building and tinkering. And to be honest, I didn't study much biology at all. I did take an interest in it, as a child, but my parents, uhm... thought it would be improper. Don't ask me to explain their logic, I don't quite understand it myself. They're not always very reasonable people." He tilted his head at Lia. I should probably get to know the other people around here too, huh? "Lia, I was wondering... how old are you? Do you study magic formally, or are you self-taught? Maybe a combination?"

Cyrus, should we go get supplies with Brin?

Uhm... why don't you go with her while I stay here? I don't know how long it's going to take, and I don't want to lug around this satchel any more than I have to.

Come with me and strap it on my back.

No, both of us need to save our strength. Besides, this talk... I'm getting really interested, even though I don't understand all of it.

All right. Kito got up and started following Brin. I'll pay close attention to everyone.

Yes, I am making this post at one in the morning. That's just how I roll.

[Desert]

"Fuck."

A man sat down in the desert, visibly exhausted. He had been traveling for a while now, still not seeing a town, or at least a place to rest his head. He looked around, as if one was going to magically pop out.

He was a black man with long black dreads, which was wrapped in a red ponytail. He had dark brown eyes, a green shirt, a light brown jacket, and khaki pants. On his back was a white backpack; what was inside was currently unknown.

"This isn't a damn town." he whined, wiping the sweat off his forehead, "Why the hell did I trust that guy to help me? Oh, John, you stupid bastard..."

No use of whining; he got back up and shuffled through the god forsaken desert again. That's when he noticed something strange.

From some sort of distance, he saw a person (or, what he assumes is a person) climbing out of a river, barely missing the train. Just what the hell was someone doing laying in the river?

Thankfully, they were unharmed, but was visibly soaking wet. And also, luck would have it, the train wasn't moving too fast, meaning he could still catch up. Oh, thank GOD. I thought I was going to die here.

First, he had to check on whoever that was, so with the energy he had so far, he rushed towards them.

"Hey!" he called, hoping he would hear him, "Hey, are you ok?"

The Tipsy Toad

The group from Terra Nova looked up as the newcomer spoke, and marked him as another off-worlder.

Wolfe noted that the backpack was incongruously new compared with his clothes - which were not new and looked like they had had a rough time in the not too distant past. He could understand the man's cynicism about treasure hunting. Depending on the time and place it could involve a lot of hard work and expense.

Teri thought that "lunatics" was a bit too strong a word. "Starry-eyed romantics", maybe, she thought.

Peggy watched with awe as Ammolite made the artefact vanish into the scaly patch. She was glad she had elected to join Karl on this sortie rather than sit it out at the farm with George and Alice; there was so much to learn and experience here.

Kris was close and alert enough to pick up Chloe's sad quiet comment about finding her brother. "Your brother's missing?" She spoke softly in case Chloe didn't want the others to hear.

James raised a hand in salute to the newcomer. "Good day, sir. I trust you are well."
