The trick here is obviously to find an image that combines the darkly-lit setting while still being clearly sc-fi. I'll open with this piece of Blade Runner fan-art, so let's see if we can find some decent options.

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"

Can we find an example that has fewer overlap with City Noir for better contrasting? If I understand this trope correctly it is about places in Sci-Fi that we would expect to be better lighted. Something like this from Brazil?

^ Looks pretty brightly-lit to me.

So to keep this seperate from City Noir, more suggestions:

I like the Ash one myself.

Either the first from Alien or the one from Event Horizon work for me.

I like the Event Horizon one but it won't show nicely at wikisize.

[up] Wiki-size is 350 px wide, so it has to look good at that size for a true judgment.

The detail in that one is just background clutter anyway, so I think it still looks good.

Browser zoom is a good feature for quick-checking how it looks at wiki-size.

An alternative shot of 14 with additional crew members.

That puts more emphasis on the people in the room than the aesthetics of it, I think.

What about the Normandy from Mass Effect?

In the future, there is no eyestrain.

Too grainy and too much emphasis on the glowy swirly eyestrain magnet.

Pity that it's come out grainy since I shrunk it down from a 1080p image. :(

Yeah, 14 is still better. It's the kind of image I'd brighten up a bit if it were any other trope.

I don't know, I like "Ash in observational lounge" from Alien. The Event Horizon one looks pretty well-lit.

This screencap of the Normandy's interior doesn't have the galactic map.

24 appears to be fairly well-lighted to me, though.
