So I'm making a sci-fantasy RPG (with a Weapons Kitchen Sink feel to it), with four modes of combat. They are:

-Melee

-Ranged/Gadgets (They're mixed together. So, landmines, grenades, guns, bows, that sort of thing).

-Magic

-Summoning (basically, Olympus Mons. Summoners can summon attack drones, monsters, pets, that sort of thing).

Each class specializes in one or two modes of combat. Some ideas I have are:

-Warrior (Melee + Melee. You get to be a full-on knight here).

-Infantry (Ranged + Ranged)

-Mage (Magic + Magic)

-Beastmaster (Summoning + Summoning)

-Martial Mage (Magic + Melee. Ryu or the Jedi would be an example of this)

Would anyone be willing to help me come up with other ideas for class hybrids?

Does it make any difference if the Martial Mage prioritizes magic or melee? If you put it on a spreadsheet, warrior, infantry, mage, and beastmaster form a middle diagonal line and the same following mirror each other.

  • Melee + Ranged : All-Weapon
  • Melee + Summoning : Berserker
  • Ranged + Magic : Trickster
  • Ranged + Summoning : Far Cry
  • Magic + Summoning : Witch

A person who can pull from two skill sets at all is considered a hybrid class. He is, however, free to prefer one skillset over the other.

Hm, I like Trickster? Perhaps I could even give it a Magicians Are Wizards theme?

A class can only have 1 or 2 skill pools. Not 3.

I'm thinking Magic + Summoning will be called a Channeler or a Medium.

It seems to me that the various combinations could be interpreted in multiple ways, depending on how they use the combined skill-types and what other abilities they have. For example, a "melee + ranged" character could easily be a thief (using knives, blackjacks, and various trick-bombs), an assassin (using knives and sniper weapons), a hunter/ranger (using spears and rifles), or even some class that uses trick arrows to soften the enemy, then charges in with a sword.

Perhaps it would help if you gave us a little more information regarding the setting, and what the various skill-types are capable of?

One thing that might help in particular is to know what "magic" is capable of: does it provide only offensive spells, or are there buffs, debuffs, and utility spells? Can we suggest classes that use some subset of that, such as a support class that primarily uses buffs and debuffs, with a melee weapon for self-defence?

I recommend looking up the game Titans Quest, as it did something very much like this as part of the gameplay.

"Beastmaster" might be a better class for the melee/summoning combination, being a sort of gladiator who uses an animal companion. Maybe you could just call the pure summoning class a "summoner?"

"Hunter" or "trapper" could be a good ranged/summoning hybrid.

I think for classes with two skills, there should probably be a primary and a secondary skill. For example:

Primary Skill Secondary Skill Class Name
Melee Ranged Ninja note
Ranged Melee Frontiersman note
Ranged Magic Toxophilite note
Magic Ranged Bomber note

And there's certainly more combinations out there.
