Thought we should have a thread for it here now that part of the cast has been revealed:

  • James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet
  • David Kaye as Clank
  • Armin Shimerman as Nefarious
  • Jim Ward as Captain Qwark
  • Paul Giamatti as Chairman Drek
  • John Goodman as Grimroth
  • Bella Thorne as Cora
  • Sylvester Stallone as Victor
  • Rosario Dawson as Elaris

Plot(which is pretty much a combination of 1 and 3 from what we know): "The film follows the two unlikely heroes (a foolhardy “lombax” and a pint-sized robot) as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. When the duo stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy."

Trailer from last year:

Edit: Movie seems to have been delayed to 2016.

Just think, after Sly Cooper: The movie, and maybe a possible Jak And Daxter film(And Hell, why not a new Ape Escape anime), we could have the Sony-Play Station version of the Avengers in the works.

Film looks like your typical Summer adventure toon flick tbh.

Hah, remember when Crash Bandicoot was Playstation's mascot? Did Crash Bandicoot ever get a cartoon movie deal?

Should probably post the announcement trailer from 2013 also:

Edit:[up][up]I don't think Crash would work as a movie. Too small cast and too little story focus.

I'm looking forward to this and Sly Cooper. I hope this means we'll get a cartoon of Crash soon(like an animated series).

Ratchet will not shoot a single thing in this movie. And that is why it will suck.

I seriously can't wait for this film. Loved the games since the first one.

I'm glad that even though it's a retelling of the first game it will still have new stuff in it. Hopefully that means Ratchet is less of an asshole than he is in the first game. I get that he was more focused on vengeance against Quark, but he feels needlessly assholish up until he starts to realize that Drek is the bigger threat.

I just wished they give the release date already.

[up]You serious(on both no shooting and it will suck cause of that)?

Well, we have a release date...and it's April 29th, 2016. Yep, we have to wait almost a whole year to see it.

Another sad thing is, the Sly Cooper movie has probably been pushed back because of this too. sad

Oh what?

They had a private viewing a while back, why would they move it up?

One thing's for certain, is that more video game movies should be made as CGI cartoons.

Though I hope Ratchet is a bit more likable, it would be a bad idea to remove that arc. It gave him some character development, and he would never get that again until Tools of Destruction.

Get rid of Ratchet altogether.

Clank is where the biz is.

I wish they still made cartoon adaptations of video games. Ratchet & Clank would make an awesome cartoon.

Even if it turns out to be your average CG animated family film, at least it got the tone and look of the video game down. I even like the Lemony Narrator making fun of trailer speeches.

[up][up] A Metroid anime would be nice. Hopefully, this ends up killing the Video Games Movies Suck trope.

The fact that it's Ratchet and Clank alone means this will get many audience members and be a pretty decent hit in the box office weekend when it comes out, but the animation is somewhat comparable to those low-budget Open Season sequels or that Space Chimps film. -shutters-

[up] I think the animation looks fine. It's not Pixar or Dreamworks but it looks better than Escape from Planet Earth, Rainmaker's previous theatrical effort.

There's something about Ratchet's fur that kinda bothers me here. I can't really place it, though. Also, is it just me or is Ratchet a lot... doofier than he typically is in the games? I mean, in the games he can be Adorkable, but he also has a bit of a hard edge that seems missing here. They seem to be going full Naïve Newcomer with him here, which he never really was in the games.

Well, Naïve Newcomer is an effective tool to avoid the dreaded Mary Sue N00b character. If Ratchet comes on as too Dangerously Genre-Savvy or something like that, he risks God-Mode Sue status, which is very off-putting. The Naïve Newcomer mechanism dulls his edges nicely, so that he's a Plucky Comic Relief that becomes an Ascended Fanboy in-universe that learns how to attain / exceed the Designated Hero. Very sound story-crafting, as far as I can tell. :)

There's also the possibility that not every single person who's going to see this movie knows that this was a video game before it became a movie.

Sure, most of the audience will be people who've played the games, but there's a tiny percentage of audiences who hasn't played the games but found about this movie and thought "Hmm, this doesn't look bad for a CG movie that's not by Pixar or Dream Works, perhaps I shall invest money in this peculiarity of a CG movie."

So when you're doing video game movies like this, you need to consider that you're doing a movie for the fans and the Average Joes who just want to watch an engaging movie. Cater too much to the fans and the average joes will be left in the dust going "I don't get it."

At least, that's my understanding.

Example: I know virtually nothing about Warcraft apart from its name, how it's a mostly-medieval MMORPG and that it is very popular, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to watch the Warcraft (2016) movie when it comes out.

Re-posting from the R&C General Discussion Thread:

What? No!

It's...it's probably nothing major. Maybe it's just blockheads being blockheads. A bunch of punks just giving this movie bad reviews just For the Evulz.

I mean, the crew worked with Insomniac themselves on this! They got James Arnold Taylor, Dvid Kaye, Jim Ward, and Armin Schimmerman in their roles from the games! The director said exactly what we were thinking regarding bad video game movies! Everything's foolproof!

This could only be possible if Uwe Boll was somehow involved in this!
