I know that Mary Sues is a bad writing trope but I also wonder if this whole thing where Mary Sue characters getting attacked, berated and humiliated is that much better? I cannot say that I am good writer but it seems as though that this trope causes quite a backlash with most accomplished authors who just write stories and it seems to incite fear into those who aren't as good at writing as those authors. Is the while witch hunt for Mary sues getting out of hand?

For me, it isn't that Mary Sue/ Gary Stu are bad per se, but it's that this trope is usually used by, well, bad writer who think they are good, actively refused criticism, viciously.

Nevertheless, Mary Sue/ Gary Stu can only work effectively in stories were good guys and bad guys are clearly cut, or if author want to make ideological statement. Also, in stories where you want protagonist to go through Character Development, Sues are bad choices. I mean, they're perfect, how you expect them to grow? Also, more often than not, Sues often fall to Omniscient Morality License trap, where everything they doing end up good, regardless of logic or how universe works.

[up] Still, Mary Sues seems to arouse a lot of disdain and even contempt for these writers. I am not sure if they are in the the minority.

I don't think this topic is going anywhere. Yes, there is an obsession with Sues in the fanfiction community. No, making a thread to complain about it won't help.
