Sorry if this has already been posted, but I haven't seen it anywhere, so I'll start (another?) one!

What's your best book haul from used stores, sales, dumpsters, etc.?

I frequent both my local Goodwill Bookstore, as well as a Friends of the Library sale that goes on every few weeks at my local library. I've had the opportunity to get some real gems, like:

A 30s Modern Library copy of Sanctuary, by William Faulkner

An early 60s American release of Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller (it has an article from a '62 Memphis newspaper inside that someone left that talks about its censorship, as well as an ad on its reverse that shows both Kennedys pre-assassination!!)

Two Robert Silverberg novels (The Second Trip and The World Inside), hardback, first edition, with the dust jackets pristine

A cool 60s rerelease of Zuleika Dobson by Max Beerbohm in this weird rectangular format

Some Signet pulp Faulkner books (Soldier's Pay, Knight's Gambit, etc.)

As well same some stuff I've probably forgotten about.

I get sale offers from Amazon and Curiosity Quills Press every so often. I got Quite Contrary and Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm A Supervillain from the latter for cheap and I loved them.

Let's see:

  • Graphic novel of The Kite Runner for RM 15
  • Dial M for Murdoch hardcover for RM 13
  • And Another Thing... hardcover first edition for RM 8
  • Hardcover of Tanks: Inside Out for RM 5 (dust jacket was trashed, though)

At least that's the hardcover books I remember getting. Are paperbacks considered good as well?

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

I found a copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. It looks like an early printing of it, too.

Got a copy of IF magazine (sci-fi story mag) from '68, with a cover story by Harlan Ellison, and an ad in the back criticizing the Vietnam War!

Also got three books by Tom Franklin (author and professor at Ole Miss), two of which were autographed, for a couple bucks.

And someone at my local library sale decided they didn't like Günter Grass anymore, because I found, like, ten Günter Grass books, all for a buck. Score.

Picked up a giant text of Shakespeare's complete works for a couple dollars at a university book sale.

I've been longing to get one edition of Jane Austen's Emma — first Czech translation with gorgeous illustrations by Adolf Born. I once found it in a used book shop, very cheap (80 crowns, which is like 3 US dollars), in perfect condition.

My aunt's friend's family (or something like that) were trying to get rid of a huge big library — I believe the library belonged to their deceased family member. She got several interesting books and allowed me to take my pick. I remember especially a very old edition of Eugene Onegin — which was my favourite book when I was about 15, so I was beyond happy. I also bought a very pretty edition of Pushkin's poems in a used book store.

My very good friend once game a complete Shakespeare's plays in English in one volume. It is from her grandma's library.

I also remember buying three volumes of Academic Grammar of Czech (Phonology—Phonetics—Morphonology—Word Formation, Morphology, Syntax). It was not super cheap, but quite a rare find. They are now available online and can be downloaded for free in pdf, which is very convenient, but I love that have the printed versions.
