Yes. You heard me. "DISNEY AMII-SKYLAN-FINITY-BO" MEETS LEGO.

Or, as I like to call those games, Collect-2-Play. Pretty much like Pay-to-Play and Freemium mixed up together from a freak accident.

LEGO Dimensions is a new game to be realesed for PS3, PS4, Xbox360, Xbox One and Wii U on September 2015 and is going to be a HUUUUUGE platformer/crossover/Collect-2-Play game all in one.

And of course, made by those basta-I MEAN, awesome gods themselves, TT Games (Traveller Tales for those smart retro gamers). And WB Games too.

The plot? A huge portal from the LEGO Dimensions comes to ours. Duh. But not so duh, as the portal needs to be built! Yes, you have to build the parts to play. Also, a masked villain is on the loose. And that's it for now. A starter kit with- you guessed it- Three characters to start off with will be launched on said release date.

Those first three unlikely heroes are Wyldstyle (from The LEGO Movie), Batman (DC Universe, but actually Will Arnett version) and Gandalf (Tolkein Universe, but actually LEGO Movie version as well). You can play as these guys when you get the Starter Kit, and even more characters later on via other kits!

Confirmed universes:

- LEGO Movie Universe (The LEGO Movie confirmed, characters and gadgets announced)

- DC Universe (Batman confirmed with gadgets and characters announced; Wonder Woman gadgets and characters announced; Cyborg gadgets and characters announced)

- Tolkein Universe (The Hobbit and/or Lord Of The Rings confirmed, with characters only announced)

- Back To The Future Universe (Back to the Future Trillogy confirmed, levels, gadgets and characters announced)

- The Wizard Of Oz Universe (Wizard of Oz confirmed, characters only announced)

- Ninjago Universe (Ninjago TV series confirmed, characters and gadgets announced)

- Doctor Who Universe (TV series confirmed, characters, levels and gadgets confirmed)

- The Simpsons Universe (TV series confirmed, characters, levels and gadgets confirmed)

- Portal Universe (Portal 2 confirmed, characters, levels and gadgets confirmed)

- Jurassic Park Universe (Jurassic World confirmed, characters and gadgets confirmed)

- Scooby Doo Universe (Original series confirmed, characters and gadgets confirmed)

- Legends Of Chima Universe (TV series/play sets confirmed, characters, gadgets confirmed)

With more to come! Any opinions/questions/thoughts?

I wouldn't lump amiibos with the others, amiibos just unlock extras instead of being necessary to even play the game. That said, I would totally get this if I had the money.

Ah. Okay. Thanks for understanding.

... can I just build the LEGOS and skip the game? LEGOS offer unlimited and endless fun that is not restricted by programming constraints.

I dunno...? They confirmed that you would use figurine-like models to use in the game.

Edit: Ninjago is now a universe. Also, it's going to be on more platforms, too.

Apparently, no one seemed to post anything in a week. Should I lock this thread?

I think the big question will be just how much this will work with existing figures. Now, I understand that there has to be some limit, particularly with licenses. But what if I want to use stuff like the two green astronauts from the Exosuit set from Lego Ideas? The Space Marine or the Blacktron Cyborg from the Minifig blind bags? Unikitty from the Cloud Cuckoo Land set from The LEGO Movie? I would be much more likely to get this if I could be assured that my massive fig collection could come into play.

[up] It'll almost certainly have no relation to extant minifigures. If it's anything like Skylanders, Disney Infinity, or amiibos, then you'll need specially made figures to play the game, with some sort of connectivity built into the figure itself. Regular minifigures would just be so much plastic.

That's the driving motivation behind "collect to play" games like this: you need to build up a collection to make the most of it, generating massive profits for the manufacturer.

I have more than enough first-hand information about how Skylanders and Amiibos work. I'm fully aware that NFC chips are usually used for these games.

That said, cameras are not that expensive for portal devices (like the one built into the WiiU game pad). It's possible that the game might work with those to possibly work with minifigs that already exist.

Sure, purely for money-making reasons alone, it's unlikely. But you can't blame a guy for hoping.

Hoping for BIONICLE to be in this. I wonder if they'll bring back mask packs as the tie-in?

YEEEEEEEEESSSSS!!! Finally, the closest thing to a Lego Doctor Who videogame.

Also, The Simpsons was indeed coming from foreshadowing. Now, all we need is Ghostbusters and Star Wa- Fuck, Disney already beat them to it.

I know, based on some of the other figure reveals, that some of them are vehicles or power-ups and that not everything shown in the reveals so far are playable characters.

But right now, I have dreams that the TARDIS and a Dagwood Sandwich running around and fighting bad guys.

Yeah, I know, but having a TARDIS bounce around and fight enemies would be vastly more entertaining than a minifig of its incarnation.

To be honest, when I heard about this game, I was only surprised it took this long for them to jump on the Skylanders wagon. Lego is probably one of THE most obvious properties for this type of game.

What is this "signature" of which people speak?

I hope to get this game after I've made a few more formal decisions about the video game system I want. While I think that it's way more expensive than necessary (I will only buy the game and Team Packs as a result), I think that, conceptually, it's the best toys-to-life game of them all.

It can't be helped.
