Ten years ago, a mysterious area called Hell's Gate appeared in the Greater Tokyo Area in Japan after a similar one known as Heaven's Gate appeared in Brazil. This has altered the skies permanently with the real stars gone, replaced by fake ones. At the same time, people with mysterious powers known as Contractors and Dolls started to appear all over the world. They have their powers obtained at a price.

Various nations and factions worldwide began to use them in special forces and espionage operations before a mysterious group called The Syndicate made itself known. Their actions have rendered various superpower nations irrelevant, including America and Russia. With the presence of Hell's Gate in Japan, this has made Tokyo and other urban cities in the country as the new international arena with external intelligence agencies, terrorists, PMCs, mercenaries, secretive corporations and other groups conduct operations against each other.

In the midst of this, an operation is secretly being conducted that has something to do with Hell's Gate. But something may happen in the area. One that would determine the fate of the world.

Welcome to Darker than Black: The Conspiracy, an attempt to do a proper game based on Darker than Black (In particular, the first one, not Gemini of the Meteor). This game centers on various individuals working for various factions to secure whatever they can from Hell's Gate and play off against each other in an attempt to gain dominance in Japan. Of course, there is going to be the occasional side job which requires them to do whatever the mission is required from assassination, hostage rescue to securing important items and black ops.

Players can either assume the role of Contractors, Dolls or non-Contractors/Dolls working for the faction of your choice, either from canon or something original.

The following canon factions are confirmed:

Two original factions to even things up:

  • Almighty Support Enterprise Inc., a multinational corporation that specializes in hiring out specialists in various fields. In the game, they are hired by certain individuals to investigate the abduction of scientists working for PANDORA.
  • Shadow Elements, a shadowy paramilitary PMC group that works for various factions when hired out, although they do have their own agenda from time to time.

Roster Sheet:

  • Name: Obvious
  • Appearance: What the person looks like. A photo or description should be okay.
  • Age: How old is the person?
  • Nationality: Where the person is from.
  • Type: Human, Contractor or Doll
  • Backstory: What the person's backstory is prior to getting involved in Japan.
  • Faction Affiliation: Which faction is the person aligned with.
  • Skills: What the person can do.
  • Powers: For those who are Contractors or Dolls. Skip for those who are human.
  • Obeisance: The price for Contractors who use their powers. This is not for Dolls and humans.
  • Messier code: For Contractors only. (Ex: AA-000).
  • Equipment: What the person usually has.
  • Comments: Anything the GM should know.

looks cool but I'll have to keep my interest tentative for now as I'm in a couple of R Ps currently... Though some are finishing or floundering, admittedly.

Interest. Loved Darker than Black. Super powered sociopaths without the Required Secondary Powers and a case of OCD, whats not to like.

How do you kill that which has no life?

Thanks, mate. I should probably lead by example.

  • Name: Michael "Mike" Chung
  • Appearance: Has typical East Asian features that can pass himself off as Chinese or Japanese (or Korean). He has a mole near the left side of his lips. Mike also sports crew cut hair. He's 5'9 in height.
  • Age: Around 28-29.
  • Nationality: Canadian of Chinese-Filipino origin.
  • Type: Human
  • Backstory: Born as a third-generation Canadian to Chinese-Filipino parents living in Canada as Canadians with two older sisters and a twin brother, he has lived in the Philippines as a young boy in order to learn more about his heritage and live with his relatives. He spent much of his education in Manila before he returned to Vancouver to study post-secondary with a degree in Political Science. Mike eventually ended up with the Vancouver Police Department and was an officer for four years in the force. He progressed through the ranks before he resigned with the rank of Police Constable 1st Class when The Syndicate interfered with a case that he was involved in, leading to rumors that the force had Syndicate moles. Prior to leaving, Mike had served for a few months in the Emergency Response Team. He was eventually recruited by ASE to serve initially as an instructor before he became an active field agent. He was stationed in Vancouver and in Manila before he was told by the head office in New York to move to Tokyo.
  • Faction Affiliation: Almighty Support Enterprise Inc.
  • Skills: Knowledgeable on Canadian federal, provincial and municipal laws, given his former profession as a police officer. He can drive cars and motorbikes alike, most of them from his time in training with the VPD. He can speak English, Tagalog and conversational Hokkien and Japanese, the latter from spending time studying it in university. In addition, Mike has also undergone additional training in armed and unarmed combat via small arms or martial arts after he left the VPD.
  • Equipment: He is seen armed with a STI Tactical DS 4.0/5.0 pistol in .45 ACP as his main weapon, depending on the need, and carries his personal wallet with some yen and a few cards. Otherwise, he uses whatever he can get his hands on, including clothes and headgear.
  • Comments: Nothing, except that he has a problem with secrets kept from him after he decided to leave the force, feeling that he needs to get justice for his colleagues who died that day. He does want to know if The Syndicate did have a mole in the VPD who sold out his fellow officers. Mike doesn't buy to the train of thought that Contractors are emotionless, rational killers since humans can also be like that, with or without special powers.

Since I haven't seen much of the anime (I live under a big rock called Uluru) I might make a doll to have an excuse for any ignorance. I'll finish this up ASAP and will likely change it many times.

  • Name: Yon

  • Appearance: Yon stands at about 1.85 metres tall with a lithe but strong, athletic body from the intense Syndicate Doll training. Her skin is rather pale but tougher than it appears, her hands and long fingers are often covered in cuts with scars along her forearms. Unless required in a different style for undercover missions Yon keeps her dirty blonde hair cropped short. Her eyes are hazel and her face attractive but neither shows any hint of emotion unless programmed with another's memories/personality - in fact, as she is also flat chested, she can often be mistaken for an effeminate man which has proved useful in certain missions. She generally wears simple combat boots, black jeans and a gray tank top unless other clothes are ordered. Unknown to many, she requires glasses to read as she is severely long sighted though it is handy for shooting.

  • Age: 28

  • Nationality: Dutch-Australian

  • Type: Doll

  • Backstory: Yon knows little to nothing of her past, her memories having been extracted with great frequency. However, Syndicate files indicate that prior to becoming a Doll she was a biochemist and biologist working with PANDORA on classified research into the relationship between Contractors, Dolls and Hell's Gate. At some point the scientist lost her own personality, emotions and became a Doll herself - some studies continued on this change before she was inducted by the Syndicate and underwent training as an assassin, tracker and soldier. Her particular medium made her a great asset during more violent engagements and for more shadowy enterprises however her social programming is somewhat of a work in progress.

Every so often, or after more critical missions she has her memories extracted so as to prevent her divulging important information if captured. Yon currently has no recollection of a past beyond her last assignment though even after all these years of rewriting her brain she has retained the ability to understand her native Dutch (she being born there before her parents immigrated). While she has proved an effective agent she does not work well alone as she, lie all Dolls, lacks initiative or planning skills.

  • Faction Affiliation: The Syndicate (Former PANDORA scientist)

  • Skills:

    • Competent stealth and tracking skills

    • Intensive combat training: includes hand-to-hand, multiple melee and ranged weapons, most conventional firearms as well as their maintenance.

    • Intensive physical training: High endurance, athletic and acrobatic ability. Training in parkour-like techniques.

    • Fluent in English and Japanese. Also understands Dutch, despite frequent ME sessions.

  • Powers: Spirit observer (blood medium, stronger when exposed to environment i.e. spilled). Usually spills her own blood for this purpose, can use blood if in the body but it is more difficult and less reliable.

  • Equipment:

    • Two identical 7 inch combat knives. One is always kept concealed in her boot.

    • Simple reading-glasses, green wire frame.

    • Standard issue pistol and holster.

    • .308 SSG rifle

Comments: Her complete (pre-Doll) memories as well as more personal/bacground info than I've supplied here exist in Syndicate files.

I think that should do it for now... I may add in a few details later.

  • Name: Luvina Almaraz

  • Appearance: A less coquettish version of this[1]

  • Age: 24

  • Nationality: Born in Texcoco, Mexico. Immigrated to the U.S at a young age.

  • Type: Contractor

  • Backstory: Born in Mexico, her family immigrated to the U.S. when she was still an infant, as her mother was beginning to suffer the early signs of Huntington's disease. Shortly there after, it was confirmed that Luvina had inherited the disease. Not knowing when the degenerative effects would ensue, Luvina eventually decided to focus studying on medicine from a young age, seeking a way to deal with the issue. Either by way of becoming prominent enough in the field of neuroscience to become involved in the still developing fields of memory and mind manipulation that was still being derived from the Hell's Gate. Or by simply gaining a strong enough income to have it privately treated.

Approximately 3 months after her mother passed away, while Luvina was in university, she awakened as a Contractor. Eyewitness reports mention her wandering about the campus seemingly in a fog, before walking out into traffic. Her reflexively phasing through the oncoming traffic, and her apparent indifference to this phenomena, quickly got the attention of the public, and from their government authorities.

She was quickly picked up, shortly afterwards, having been convinced by authorities to not resist for the time being. After video footage and the memories of eyewitnesses were erased, a story was fabricated of her transferring to a university in Europe. With most of the loose ends tied up and alibis provided for her disappearance, the CIA looked into the issue of gaining a handle on her abilities and turning her into something useful.

Having access to her school and medical records, gave them an easy applied negotiation tool with Luvina. Offering to provide experimental treatments for her genetic malady, quickly gained her loyalty; a Contractor no more wants to slowly have their mind degenerate than the average person. Even so, they looked for methods to control and track her, beyond simple loyalties, leery of her ability to pass through any object or barrier. As such, they usually only trusted her with handlers that were already experienced with dealing with Contractors and also required that a subdermal tracking chip be installed to keep tabs on her. That this device comes with a small supply of toxin meant to subdue her was not heavily advertized.

After two years of mostly successful work for the CIA, she has begin to grow doubtful on their willingness to provide her the treatments she desires. She suspects that they are wary of giving up their primary means of controlling her. As such, she has increasingly pressed them on the issue, and has begun reconsidering her loyalties.

As of right now, she's been sent as part of a small cell to Japan to look into the Hell's Gate. Further research into her powers, has her superiors wondering if they might provide greater access to the depths of the Hell's Gate than others have had. Her interest in the mission is marginal, not caring about the prospect of having to infiltrate the facilities surrounding the Hell's Gate. Her concerns lie more with finding someone willing to follow through on the treatment for her Huntington's.

  • Faction Affiliation: Currently an agent for the CIA. Though, her loyalties are failing, as they fail to deliver on their promises. Will likely defect to the first faction that can provide what she's looking for.

  • Skills:

    • Physically healthy, though lacking in actual training or conditioning. Has received basic firearm and self-defense training from the CIA after being recruited, though mainly relies upon her power for dangerous situations.

    • Has received conditioning against pain, to aid in maintaining her contract. Somewhat resilient against torture, though not exceptionally so.

    • Former med-school student. Her skill isn't as practiced or up-to-date, since she dropped out after becoming a Contractor

    • Speaks and reads both Spanish and English fluently. Also, knows International Sign Language. Still learning Japanese, and usually relies upon translation software on her phone for filling in the gaps.

    • Is a Contractor, and is thus strictly rational in her decision making.

  • Powers: Phasing.

Luvina has the power to phase her body, and any part of her body, through any material. Her control of this ability is so fine enough that she keep some parts of her body corporeal and others non-corporeal. She can bring objects with her, but only what she can easily carry herself. While great offensively, defensively and for infiltration, this power has some very firm limits, that she aims to keep concealed. Phasing does not allow her to arrest her momentum, so falling from great heights or leaping from a moving vehicle have many of the same risks as they would for anyone else. Yes, she could phase to avoid hitting the ground, but would then have to deal with the prospect of falling through the ground forever until that killed her, instead. This also means that she usually must keep the bottom of her feet at least partially corporeal most of the time. Likewise she must keep some portion of her self solid to hold onto and manipulate objects. She can and will let any foreign material phase through her, if necessary. This can inculde tools, clothing, piercings, and anything that might be implanted in her body.

The exact nature of her power is more in-line 4-D tunneling and hyper-spatial manipulation, and would likely require a lot of imaginary numbers and quantum physics equations to properly explain.

  • Obeisance: Unable to vocalize. This is a constant contract, that she must always hold to, where she cannot perform any kind of vocalization. It does not matter if it's willing or not, consciously or unconsciously, a spoken language or an incomprehensible grunt, if she utters a sound it's considered a breach of contract. Breaching her contract quickly causes the trauma that other contractors suffer when they fail to serve out their own obeisance. These symptoms abate relatively soon after she stops vocalizing, though worsen if she continues to do so.

Her actual ability to speak is completely intact, which arguably makes the contract even more of a pain to hold to. As mentioned above, even if she isn't willingly breaking her contract, it's seen as a breach. She's had to be trained out of sleeptalking and undergone some conditioning to control the urge to cry out from pain or surprise.

The only exceptions to the rule seem to be things like coughing and sneezing, provided they are genuine.

She usually relies upon texting with her phone to communicate.

  • Messier code: VS-319

  • Equipment:

    • A high-end CIA-issued smartphone. Also, owns a lower-end, though still expensive, smartphone that is free of the monitors and tracking programs found on her CIA issued phone.

    • Usually wears a dress suit and watch.

    • A small handgun, along with documentation allowing her to carry it.

    • False identification papers, provided by the CIA.

    • Has access to CIA funds, on an as-needed-basis. Has also secretly set up a personal bank account with several thousand dollars in cash.

    • Carries a small notepad and two pens, in case she can't otherwise communicate with someone.

    • Wears corrective lens. Usually glasses. Her vision isn't so bad that she can't get by without them, though.

  • Comments: Often provided the code name "Lady Blue" when on operations for the CIA.

Can't think of anything else to add in here, though questions or suggestions are welcomed.

@Gob

- Not bad for a Doll like her. Although I need to ask if Yon needs to use fresh spilled blood from a VIP to hunt the person down? 'Cause there may be a case like that.

@dungeon

- Yay! First Contractor entry for Luvina. Read it through and it looks fine to me.

More super-powered sociopaths sounds fun! Well, in theory if not in practice. tongue

I've edited Yon's backstory a tad after doing a little more researching in terms of the anime - nothing major, just removed her having been a sleeper agent in the past. Thought it would working better.

Indeed (I really must put aside some time to watch the show, if only while doing lab reports haha). It just seemed teaching them to do basic stuff like clothe themselves and eat were difficult enough - so they'd put their efforts into making her a good assassin and not worry overly about social human-y stuff.
