Just a Face and a Caption: Ethnic Scrappy

Yeah, this is JAFAAC and it's not really even an example. The guy in an extremely minor character and has maybe two scenes in the whole show. I know the trope is a bit of a YMMV thing, but he's not particularly scrappy-ish either. He doesn't do enough to qualify, and even if he did, the picture doesn't show that at all.

I'll have to take your word on all of that, but I'll go ahead and open this...not crazy about the cropping on the current, at any rate.

I just want to add that he isnt even on the examples list or even has a wick on the series YMMV page.

I have absolutely no idea what that is, what ethnicity or anything.

I guess you'd need a better close-up image of their crooked, gold-plated teeth.

So regardless of the apparent lack of submissions, what's the consensus on the current image? Keep Until Better Image Suggested, or dump?

Well, I don't know enough about the work, but the way that character is depicted there seems like he's a deliberately obnoxious character. So I don't mind keeping it, actually.

Hm, but The Scrappy is not necessarily deliberately obnoxious. If he is not an example, maybe that is a minus, but still better than that Transformers suggestion. Anything else?

So reading the examples, basically any non-main character that can come off as kinda racist thus hated?

Why not throw up some Black Face something up there and call it a day?

Looking through the examples, one that immediately stood out was Chop Chop from Blackhawk: 1◊, 2◊

11.1 might work, may need a caption though.

I kind of like 11.2. I agree that 11.1 is more dynamic artwork, but 11.2 has Chop Chop next to a white lady; the comparison really emphasizes his monstrous proportions.

First thing I thought of was Chin-Kee from American Born Chinese (though his reason for existence in the book is...complicated).

That's a good image. Showing how the other characters are responding to the Ethnic Scrappy with annoyance really helps.

The problem I have with that is that it would mean the character is supposed to be unlikeable in-story, rather than by fans.

On the flip side, how do we show the audience's reaction to anything?

I've pulled the clock and hooked a crowner. Note that making this a BUPKIS page is one of the options.

for Chin-kee though the image will probably need some neatening up around the edges.
