Supposedly digital clocks can be used as time fuses for homemade bombs. Utterly ridiculous in this context though.

The school publicly released a statement and said the staff acted out of the safety of the students.

The police also released a statement that said the reason the kid was arrested 'cause he didn't give a detailed explanation, which made them do it.

Right. It's the ninth grade boys fault they arrested him for not having a bomb. They dont even know how to come up with plausible excuses.

[up][up]O RLY? And I suppose it had nothing to do with the police officer in charge of the interrogation making a comment that made it clear he was employing racial profiling? Or the one where he insisted that the kid was making a bomb because it "looks like a movie bomb to [him]"?

I mean, really, using movies as a reference for how to identify bombs in real life??? Who the hell gave this guy a passing grade in the police academy?!

Seriously, if the kid had wanted to make a bomb, he wouldn't have wasted time building the clock: he'd just have bought a cheap alarm clock off the shelf...

Something I'd like to bring up, that I found buried halfway through another article about poor Ahmed, that gives me real serious chills.

During questioning, officers repeatedly brought up his last name, Mohamed said. (His family is from Sudan and is Muslim.)

When he tried to call his father, Mohamed said he was told he couldn't speak to his parents until after the interrogation was over. They asked if he had plastic explosives.

Asked why Mohamed was not permitted to call his parents while being questions by police, Boyd, the police chief, said he did "not have answers to your specific question."

Emphasis mine.

Also for a slightly lighter take on the whole thing, was this response I saw on Facebook, which I really really hope some parentsnote  bring up to the school district.

In a better world, where bullshit gets checked:

"Ok, so you thought the boy made a bomb."

"Yes."

"And instead of evacuating the school, you pulled him out of class, arrested in front of everyone, then interrogated him, on the premises without getting the children to safety? So, we're going to put you up for criminal endangerment of this entire school"

"Well, uh, maybe we didn't really think it was a bomb"

"Oh, ok, so instead you lied to police and federal authorities in order to bring up false charges against a minor for... kicks? I mean, you're basically picking between which charges you'd like to go up on here. Let me know, so we can get the paperwork right."

Well, there is one point of brightness in all this: MIT has taken an interest. I wouldn't be surprised if that extends to field trips and side projects with an eye to enrollment down the line.

They do like gutsy, do-first-get-yelled-at-later engineers with an ability to rile the unenlightened over there, after all. smile And, well... he's proven himself, there. Keep the grades up, and he's pretty much what they like to snap up.

An idea just occurred to me on how to fuck with burqa bans: painting the lower part of your face black.

And if you want to get imaginative about it, get artistic with it. Juggalo it up. Use colourful patterns. Generally mess with people's facial recognition processes.

Ahmed and his family are moving to Qatar.

I feel terrible, but my first thought was, "oh no, he really is a terrorist!" Not so much because of Qatar specifically but because I was thinking of Adil from that episode of The Simpsons.

Edit- corrected link hopefully

There is no apparent evidence on Google or in the Nexis news database of anything called the "Qatar Foundation Young Innovators Program" having existed before two recent QF press releases. (The Qatar Foundation is affiliated with something called the World Innovation Summit for Health Young Innovators program, but that program involves invididuals up to 30 years of age who have "significant achievement innovating in a health-related field."

Well, this is suspicious, but more due to the way the country runs its institutions and non-tourism areas.

On another note, no serious news articles should feature a question mark at the end of the title. It rustled my communication jimmies.

I was mostly joking.

Basically, tropewise his leaving the country and Qatar having this apparently new organization supporting him seems suspicious- like I can imagine a movie where he thanks President Obama but then gives a Psychotic Smirk to the audience.

But of course, this isn't a movie and the kid just built a clock.

And I feel sad that he and his parents don't feel safe in the United States. I mean I think they are kind of wrong as the majority of people don't think like that Texas town, but I don't blame them for feeling that way.

France is clearly in need of more/bigger mosques, if muslims often find themselves praying in the streets.
