A Gothic Horror Dungeon Crawl, in the vein of Darkest Dungeon.

The players would take on the roles of prisoners locked away in a maze-like pit by the autocratic government of the kingdom, whether fighters from the resistance, former members of the regime imprisoned for disloyalty or failure, or perhaps actual criminals (after all, just because the leaders are evil doesn't mean they don't have a problem with highwaymen robbing or murdering their populace).

When chance (or fate) presents an opportunity to escape, this ragtag group must fight their way through the dank labyrinth, battling guards, insane prisoners who escaped their cells only to become lost, and the hideous abominations of the deep places of the world.

Hmm... While I'm considering starting up a second roleplay and would likely do Awakening of Magic, I want to know if anyone would be interested in this: The players, for one reason or another, ends up in an alternate universe. Each player first goes through a strange place of existence (essentially think Station of Awakening) where they accept and reject some qualities. The qualities they accept will be the basis for their abilities (which are unique for each of you), whereas the rejected quality/qualities become the basis for your specific group of monster (say you choose Attack and Defense but reject Magic, your monsters will be fragile yet potent spell casters). You'll exit this place by defeating a (what will be an exclusive to you recurring) boss, upon which you appear in a kingdom derived from your mind. Thus an intellectual will wake up in a progressive intelligent domain, while a party loving fool gets a town full of jesters.

Did I explain that well enough?

Currently planning an Avatar Battle and Roleplay thread (that focuses on being the dominant power), wherein everyone can make their side or join others, and there can be more than two sides. It's either in the Roleplay thread, or in the Forum Games, depending on the audience. Anyone interested?

Okay... Now trying the Darker than Black RP interest checking now. If it doesn't pan out...

I'll close it for now and maybe rework it for details.

Going to wait and see if others are going to be interested in a Darker Than Black RP. I'll have to give some background details first and work them up.

[up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up] All of the arrows! But seriously, this. I've been playing Darkest Dungeon for a while now, and I love the positively dreary atmosphere so much I'd be completely stoked for a chance to actually roleplay through the horrors therein. You can color me interested, and not just tentatively.

[up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up] Seemingly whimsical, enchanting, and extremely interesting in concept. While I find the character creation portion utterly fascinating and a welcome breath from the stale "insert statistical attributes here" idea, I would genuinely like to know what the overall plot might be (or if you have any ideas therein) and/or how it would all tie in with the other players. Beyond that, you've certainly piqued by curiosity :3

Darkest Dungeon was great, but I dunno how you'd translate that to a post-by-post format. Realistically, the story and setup are simple, just carried by the atmosphere (hard to translate to just words) and mechanics.

Well, the players would all share a world with all their kingdoms retroactively gaining connections with the others and generally existing once they complete their Awakening. Every monster the players encounter will be derived from one of them, and when asked the various kingdoms would say these things began appearing a few months ago. The players' mission would thus be to eliminate the monsters' source, a mega monster which constructed a second moon as its base. Though, events will greatly hint that there's much more going on than initially apparent.

[up]x4

See, that's the biggest problem, and the main reason I'm second-guessing it. For any media that doesn't have a visual representation to work with, atmosphere is dependent upon good word choice on the part of the one writing it, but also upon the attitude of the people intended to feel that atmosphere. They need to be willing to get connected and experience it. Ever tried reading a horror novel with disinterest? Ruins it if you can manage it.

[up][up]See, I was interested in that, and I had a character all written up, right up until I found out it was dice-based. I don't have a problem with dice systems, it's just dice systems for play-by-post games really... they kinda rub me the wrong way, because it often results in some wonderful post of what the action is, then the die comes up a one, and it all falls apart, nothing you said happened actually happened, and it changes the usual atmosphere from suspense "will this work?" to anxiety "don't screw me!" for me when I can't see the dice.

[up][up][up][up]But the exact same thing happens in freeform all the time. Unless you autohit you have no guarantee that what you put in a post is what happens.

Lives Ruled by Hearts (that's the best name I came up with) is active, though sorry if the Signups seem too small. There really wasn't much else to mention besides their trial, monsters, and kingdom. Other stuff probably would of constituted of spoilers. Regarding Awakening of Magic, I'll post it one day.

Combat is a whole different beast, though, Nman.

Suppose I need to weld something and I've taken actual welding classes. If I describe the process properly in freeform, the GM isn't likely to arbitrarily say "yeah, you fail and the welding torch explodes in your hand." In a dice based system, no matter how much background you have, it's as likely as not you'll end up setting yourself on fire because you rolled poorly.

Actually the rolls only count for combat. There are passive events which allow you to use the skill without issue.

When there is a enemy nearby and attacking (Even enemies must roll) that's different because now your character is under stress and must preform under stress.
