I have. Gotta say though — The Battle of Five Armies is my least favourite of all six movies. I'd give it a 4.5/10.
I have yet to see the third one. After the second I felt they really should be labeled 'inspired by' rather than 'adapted from' though. I certainly do intend to see the third one though but overall while I feel that the movies have really deviated not just from the books but from the entire cannon.

Exactly, but they aren't that bad (I loved them).
The road goes ever on. -TolkienI certainly agree that they're not bad!
I'm curious to know what you guys think about elves having curved swords though. I kinda like the aesthetic but because Egalmoth's sword was explicitly stated to be curved so I feel that Tolkien pictured them with straight swords.

To everyone who may not know: don't forget the respective associated threads with his works on the Literature and Live-Action Film subforums.
Is this coven solely dedicated to the works, or can it be expanded to talk about the conlangs he made (both within and outside his works), his analysis of fairy tales, his life, and so on and so forth?

The road goes ever on. -TolkienIt's basically about anything Tolkien related.
The road goes ever on. -TolkienConsider me a witch then.

Coven. witch. Just... going with the theme here...
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youAh, I see! I apologize for my lack of understanding!
Is anyone up for a long rambling discussion on the merits of the films?
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youSure. What points do you want to raise?
All of them.
I actually read the books as the first film came out, and I thought they were an excellent adaptation. I think they captured the sheer beauty of Middle-Earth very well. Big fan of the costuming and set departments.
I did think the Elves looked too human though. The huge CGI Elven army in the Hobbit films actually sat better with me than the human-actor one that showed up in Helm's Deep. Although that might have more to do with the Big-Lipped Alligator Moment nature of the latter.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youOk, I see. The adaptations were generally good, though, personally, I still feel partly cheated due to the exclusion of the 'Scourging of the Shire' (and the whole actual death of Saruman) chapter, for various reasons.
As for the CGI vs. human actors, it depends. I liked the battle of Helm's Deep precisely because of this human presence factor, even if the Elves felt a bit too human (the CGI scenes in ROTK were allright). The CGI scenes in the Hobbit movies (especially in the third one), though, felt too... Total War-ish to me (especially in the way the Battle of the Five Armies was enacted).
The way the elves moved was great. I actually liked that effect for the elves, because I personally think that's the way they SHOULD move. The dwarves and orcs though, I agree.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youNot the biggest fan in the world YET, but I am more than willing to learn. Favorite characters are Gandalf, Gollum, and Gimli. #3Gs
It can't be helped.Salutations! ^__^
Which of his works have you read?~

Supposedly a sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is coming out.
Oh, nice.
I swear, the owners of this work keep such a tight fist on all the rights to all the stuff. I'm upset there's been no further Battle Of Middle Earth games. Rise of the Witch King was amazing.
A bit clunky in terms of rts gameplay, but amazing.

Pardon me for the sudden question, but is there anyone here who was previously on the Council-of-Elrond forums?
I still keep the bookmark to the old URL even though it's pretty much a dead page now. (I wonder what caused it to go "poof"? Did the site's administrators lose interest or something?)
The site as it looked during the run-up to The Desolation of Smaug, via the Internet Wayback Machine.
"Learn as if you will live forever, live as if you will die tomorrow."Tolkien's online presence seems to be somewhat spotty, even here on TVT which surprised me, actually. I think the Tolkien Estate's refusal to sanction adaptations and installments has something to do with it. Without new merch to drive the fandom, fandom kinda.... stagnates.

So this is the thread for all TVT Tolkien nerds to talk about the works of JRRT or anything related.
Who's seen all three Hobbit movies?
