Just post your favorite Action-orientated cartoons.

Ones I like because of the World Building involved in them:

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • Samurai Jack

And then here are the ones I simply love. Mostly due to Childhood nostalgia with them:

  • The Powerpuff Girls
  • the DCAU
  • Teen Titans

EDIT: Anime won't count for this thread, they have to be Western Cartoons.

Aside from Batman The Animated Series I am partial to the old Hanna Barbera action toons from the 60s. Space Ghost in particular.

As well as vintage anime... Speed Racer (yes, I mean that in seriousness), Gatchaman, and so on. But since that doesn't count...

Oh I love the original Gatchaman, have the DVD release of the dubbed anime with art by Alex Ross on the DVD covers.

It's such an awesome show.

I haven't seen many. No one I knew growing up watched any action cartoons, so I didn't even know they were a thing until after I pretty much gave up cartoons in 2002. That said, I do like what little I've seen so far of Gargoyles, Avatar: The Last Airbender... um... The Life and Times of Juniper Lee (but you knew that, right?).

So far, haven't gotten into any superhero titles.

Action cartoons, while there are lots of good ones, are comparatively rare in the US. Let me see...I always loved Dungeons and Dragons, Jonny Quest, and yeah, Battle of Planets (Gatchaman, whatever). Voltron...even as a little little kid, I could tell there was something different about the Japanese cartoons. Voltron was the first cartoon I ever saw that actually had a conclusion (the second was the Ruby-Spears series Puppy's Greatest Adventures — which actually wasn't bad, and apparently only I remember).

DC superhero cartoons are usually entertaining.

I find that I'm much more picky with action series than comedy series; I never was able to explain why.

Still, to pick out my favorites - the DCAU as a whole (doesn't feel right to pick out one show from an overall great continuity), the original Ben 10 (but I find myself dissatisfied with every sequel/reboot of it), Adventure Time (well, this one straddles the line between action and comedy), Transformers Animated, and Exo Squad. There's a few more that I like (particularly amongst the Transformers series), but those are the ones that I love.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

Although it's mostly a comedy, The Boondocks also has some good action scenes thrown in.

DC superhero cartoons are usually entertaining.

While I have never dealt with either Marvel's or DC's animated universes to any degree, I'm finding that so far, I tend to like Marvel's flagship characters better. Granted, some of this is simply because more Marvel works have come my way than DC, but still.

I'd probably like, say, Batman or Teen Titans if I gave either a chance, but I just can't get into anything Superman. He just doesn't interest me.

Oddly enough I've never read superhero comics, I'm only familiar with the TV cartoons and live-action movies.

I do suggest you try out some shows, you can find some on Netflix, and others elsewhere on the Internet.

[up]I've read very few superhero comics, so my superhero exposure is largely cartoons, movies, and video games.

As much as I love Gatchaman, lets try to keep the thread on topic and just name American Cartoons. Western Animation deserves love too and Anime can easily overtake the thread if we are not careful.

Take a wild guess based upon my edits list evil grin
Besides TCW and Rebels, big favorites are both Avatar series, but the I'm leaning more to the original, The Spectacular Spiderman and Darkwing Duck. Also Tale Spin if it counts as such, I'm not sure. The Ben 10 original and Omniverse series closing the list as Guilty Pleasures. I'm not really into other superhero stuff, and I hate Humongous Mechas, so that's probably it. Oh yeah Gargoyles wasn't bad either, but watching it on marathon, it became tiresome after a while.

@11 Well, in most media, I do agree that I enjoy Marvel better. Western animation is the sole exception. There have been quite a few Marvel cartoons that I have enjoyed (oh, the 90's X-Men and Spider-Man shows... those were great). But on the whole, I've enjoyed the DCAU more. That said, since the end of the DCAU, I have been much less sanguine - Teen Titans was really good, and there were moments of Young Justice that I liked. But a bunch of other stuff (The Batman in particular) has left me cold.

I can totally relate regarding Superman, though - he can be very difficult to write for. I think the problem is that he's just too powerful for many cases - for when the action picks up (and you know you want the action to pick up in a Superman show), he's absurdly dominant. In general, I find that the best Superman stories follow one of three patterns:

  1. It's more of a character study about Clark Kent than a simple setup for a Supes fight scene.
  2. It's a chess match where Supes has to figure out how to beat a very clever opponent (this is why Lex Luthor is the best Supes villain - he's so smart, he makes plans that Supes can't beat by punching... in fact, Superman physicality might be key to the plans working).
  3. The foe is magical, and thus resulting in a way around Superman's invulnerability without the crippling (yet story-dependent on whether he can resist its effects) effect of Kryptonite.

I mean, you do still have to get plenty of stories in where he's just pounding the crap out of someone like Mongul or the like, because you need some bread-and-butter demonstrations of what Superman can do. But overall, yeah, Superman is one of the hardest superheroes to write for.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.
