New Design and Code Update - January 8, 2015

Go To

Tropers - The first of many exciting updates to TV Tropes is upon us! In this update, we focused primarily on making the header and side navigation bars consistent throughout the site. We also reworked a ton of the backend code to allow for easier and more rapid development as we move forward.

Some of you may love the new design, others may hate it. Either way, we would love to hear from you below. We are listening, I promise.

If you have a bug to report, please use the designated thread on the Tech Wishlist and Bug Report to let us know about it.

Now get back to Troping!

Oh. Seems fine to me, though probably a little lighter would be nice.

Best of luck ironing the color scheme out.

>The current palette is blue and white. The new design is still blue and white. It's not that big a change.

The current palette is heavy white with tiny splashes of light blue in small places.

The new palette is two large bars of heavily saturated blue with a white background jammed in between them.

My advice is to turn the bars white, put "random, tropes, media, and forums" into little blue circular boxes like the ones at the top of this page, along with the user info, and it would probably be fine.

That and get rid of the facebook crap.

Looks like we had another hiccup in the implementation?

It just reverted back to the old layout for me.

I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.

It happened again. Please get it sorted out soon. I would like to try and navigate the restyled site soon, because I honestly find the site at it's current state difficult to navigate.

That was out of nowhere! It really does get buggy, but really the look isn't THAT bad.

It's like TV Tropes is trying to evolve and someone keeps pressing the B button.

Went onto the site, saw the new layout and wondered what happened, noticed I was logged out, decided to log back in, and then it returned to the old layout.

Made me think; will there be a option to switch between the old and new layouts? Some people may not like the new layout being forced upon them.

I only saw the new format for a minute {Which I was logged out during, so I can't actually say how well it worked}, but I can safely say I'm not a fan at all. But because of how quickly it was gone, I can't really say exactly what I hated about it aside from two things {One being the design, the other being the fact that I couldn't even log in during the brief period that the site changed to the new format}. I know, that's kind of confusing, but I didn't really get much time to try it more.

I am also not a fan of the new design. The blue is too dark blue and clashes too heavily with the white.

The new layout was lagging like CRAZY on my Firefox 33.0 browser until it switched back to the old layout, which instantly fixed the lag.

...I kinda wanna keep the old layout or have an option for turning it back on...

Thrice they've seemingly tried to switch to the new layout. None of them have worked.

Fate is trying to tell you something - "If it ain't broke... Don't fix it!"

I am in support of being able to choose between the old and the new layouts, if it comes to that.

Yeah did they say anything about not being able to upload new Avatars? Because I can't upload avatars now.

I agree with Aldo on the possible option of being able to choose between the two layouts at will.

I do think you should use a white or lighter blue instead of the very dark blue you have chosen for Tropes 2.0. Beyond that, it seems the biggest problem is it being unreasonably slow to load up.

3Power, do you have any comments you wish to make that don't boil down to They Changed It, Now It Sucks!? Because personally I would prefer to wait until the new site build is stable before we start quibbling over aesthetics.

This kind of stuff needs to be nipped in the bud from the get go. If you don't react immediately then the people in charge can form a mental block that tells them "well no-one's complaining so it must be fine." And then it never gets changed.

The topic of this thread is the new design. I am discussing the new design. Stop trying to tell me to discuss it later.

Now do you have any comments that don't boil down to The Complainer Is Always Wrong ?

>yeah, i've only seen the new layout for a split second.

There are pictures a page back.
