I just watched Sakura's story mode.

That was way better than a Street Fighter story have the right to be. Or just Capcom or fighting games for that matter.

I'm a bit torn, because while it is a pretty well done story, it's also marred somewhat by the fact that "I don't actually want to be fighter, what I really need to do is settle down and have babies" is an extremely common character arc for female characters in series like this, and it just feels like another default to stereotypical characterization.

I liked it too. I would like it if they gave Sakura a character arc that moved her away from being a Ryu clone/fangirl.

You gotta start somewhere.

Not that I don't get this kind of thinking (especially regarding Japan's stereotypes), but I know plenty of men who wants to settled down & form a family. Maybe it could've been phrased better but I think most of story itself was fine. Especially for a Capcom game.

In MSH VS SF, she has a kid & some people say he has resemblance to Ryu. I could argue he resembles Shoma more, but I could honestly care less. Especially since it's not even canon.

In other news, I just found out that Sakura is the most popular Street Fighter character.

[up][up][up]I think it's because these types of things don't exist in a vacuum. I could write paragraphs on how often love and children are used as motivations for women in fiction, or gender roles in general (i wrote my dissertation on the topic). The point is, having women give-up on traditionally unfeminine ambitions to take up more traditionally feminine roles is a lot more common than most people realise. Not to mentioned that even when settling down, men are often allowed to have ambitions outside of the family, whilst the family becomes the woman's entire world.

I mean, look at Ken. He's a husband and father, yet still pursues his career as a fighter. They could have done the same thing with Sakura. It could've have even worked as counterpoint to Ryu, having both the other shotos successfully managing family life with street fighting, whilst Ryu leads this solitary existence completely devoted to combat.

Street Fighter gets some leeway in this regard, considering that it has a variety of other female characters, but it still leaves a sour taste in the mouth, at least for me; especially since she was one of my favourite characters. Personally, I also find it a bit strange, considering how in previous entries she always talks so enthusiastically about fighting being fun. Not to mention all those references to her potential feel like build up to nothing now.

That last paragraph was more subjective, but I feel better after typing it.

Considering Sakura's win quotes in versus mode, I think it's clear that she still enjoys fighting, but she's now having the realization of And Then What? regarding her dream of becoming stronger and everything. I think her story is less about her quitting being a fighter in order to pursue a more domestic life and more that she just realized that she wants things other than just becoming stronger. In a way, she started out by following Ryu's lifestyle, but now she's realizing that she wants a life more like the one Ken has.

That and not everyone wants to be the wandering fighting Hobo like Ryu. The story seems like Sakura is thinking about life beyond just being a powerful fighter.

I'm amused by Ryu's face when Sakura brings up babies. Whether you say she was propositioning him or not, he must have surely interpreted her line of conversation as the first one and acted accordingly (try to change the subject away from him, and maybe hope she doesn't notice).

So the character I would like to see make a return in this game the most is Eagle. However, I have no idea what his gameplay is like. How does he play in both Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium and the handheld versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3, and how could he potentially play in this game?

For a guy with two batons, he's kinda like a defensive Gen (normal stance) in gameplay. Light hits to multihit knockdown special, mid range pokes. He's got a projectile reflect. His main supers are a multihit spinning lariat and an autocombo string into knockdown.

I think he'd be given an overhead and losing all his light-to-mid links. They might use his projectile reflect as a juggle starter (with EX, since it does look like a golfing motion). His Critical Art would be his autocombo but more cinematic, and his V-skill could be his lariat. V-trigger 1 may give him a souped up V-skill lariat and multihit baton strike, and V-trigger 2 might powerup his normals like Chun VT 1 turning them into shock batons and giving them more hitstun.

[up] Hm, interesting. I assume he wasn't the most well-played (By which I mean not many people mained him or he didn't have a very high playerbase) of characters when he appeared in either Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium or the Street Fighter Alpha 3 portable games, so I assume that he's not someone on many peoples radar. In terms of tiers, where does he rank?

I'm not sure why the guy you want most is a guy who you have no idea how he even plays but...well Eagle is from SF 1 so he has seniority and a small cult following but he's just okay/mid tier wise at best and I'll be surprised if he gets in. But then again Birdie is in so it's possible(, though Birdie had more prominence in the series than Eagle did.

Personally I find him neat but he's pretty low on most priority lists. I wouldn't mind him in but like I'd prefer dudley, sodom, or fei long in his place.

I know the feeling: Browse the net, see a pic of an interesting character, end up looking for info on them and maybe try to enjoy the media with them on it.

Sorta like how Poppy made me try League of Legends. To this day I still don't like League's gameplay and quit long ago, but I still like Poppy.

And thanks to Ringo, I gave Puyo Puyo a fair chance, but it wasn't for me.

In Eagle's case, none of the games with him on it are being widely played at the moment. One can only hope the version of Street Fighter Alpha 3 in the upcoming Street Fighter Collection is the MAX version/expansion so we can get to play with Yun, Ingrid, Eagle, etc.

I'm reading the Street Fighter Legends Ibuki comic right now, and Makoto's characterization seems to be, "eat, sleep, and fight," she's like one step away from being Ryu, taking a bus trip and going around the world being a martial arts hobo. I'm curious if they've actually met in the Street Fighter timeline somewhere - Makoto seems like she'd fill Sakura's role of wanting to fight and train with Ryu.

[up][up][up][up] I haven't seen much gameplay of him, and I'm pretty clueless when it comes to aspects of competitive gaming like tiers, so I was curious as to where he stands.

Other reasons why I would like for him to be in the game is to hear a remix of his theme and to see what his stage would look like in HD.

So I should bring up how the new Fight Money systems in SFV: AE work, since they make it perfectly clear that Capcom wants to get rid of Fight Money as much as possible, and actively try to make paying with real money the only option.

Every single mode except the main Story Mode, Challenges and Extra Battle has had their Fight Money bonuses stripped out. So now the only way to reliably get Fight Money is to level up characters. This means Character Stories pay way less, and have the added affect of levelling your characters to the point where it's slower to get Fight Money. You don't get any Fight Money or EXP from Arcade Mode either. As for Weekly Challenges, the rewards have been cut by 50% as compared to pre AE.

So with Extra Battle, every single match requires a Fight Money entry fee. If you lose, you get nothing. On launch, they had a Shin Akuma challenge, which is basically a giant Fight Money sink, since Shin Akuma is an absurdly difficult boss, and every attempt drains more and more FM. The character costumes cost an entry fee as well, so for people saving up for characters/stages, if they want the super cool crossover outfits that have a limited time availability window, they have to fork over the FM. Now, as of this writing, the Rashid/Viewtiful Joe outfit challenges have been pathetically easy. But I am not putting it past Capcom to make the last two have a massive A.I spike to wring more FM out of people, especially with what was revealed of the Golden Shadaloo Soldiers.

So the Golden Soldiers, the advertised way of getting lots of Fight Money, are a trick. As it turns out, the soldiers are made to get cheap wins over you, thanks to them having an abundance of i-frames on recovery and their main special moves. It's enough to make meaties phase through them as they recover, leaving you open for a counter attack. And of course, you only get three tries. Losing uses up a try, so not only do you lose your entry fee, but also the rewards.

It winds up destroying every bit of fun that could have been had with Extra Battle. What could have been a cool, interesting Challenge Mode, is now a really scummy, exploitative money sink.

A corpse should be left well enough alone...
