World War III and Nuke 'em have the same generic mushroom cloud as an image.

I'd say replace WWWIII with a shot of cities actually being destroyed, or at least more than one cloud:

one

two

The first even comes with an artist ID.

Could something be done with this scene from WarGames?

Yeah, a meagre picture of one mushroom cloud won't cut it.

I like the multi-mushroom image in the OP. Using a few of them indicates "war" more clearly.

[up][up] That first one took me to a "malicious page" warning, and the second two look like generic war pics.

I like 2.1 the best, as it shows people waging war (not just one or even a few bombs detonating), and is from a work of fiction.

[up] You're getting a lot more out of that busy picture than I am. I find 1.1 much easier to understand. (And, really, when would you expect to see nukes dropped on cities without there being a war?)

"A lot more"? It's a War Room and the screens show missiles being fired all over the world... don't have to get much.

Nuclear bombs don't have to be dropped from anywhere, the unexplained giant girl is distracting, and a mushroom cloud doesn't really say "war" to me (there are lots and of other possible scenarios).

v It is in response to the question of when I'd expect to see bombs dropped.

If I squint, I can make out the shapes of a couple countries on the monitors. That's about the only way I can tell that it has something to do with war and isn't just some sort of testing facility. Also, the more I look at the scene, the more I get a Zeerust vibe that really detracts from its credibility.

I'm not sure what "Nuclear bombs don't have to be dropped from anywhere" is supposed to mean or how it's relevant. It looks to me like the "unexplained giant girl" in 1.1 is actually just a normal girl in the foreground overlooking the carnage from some vantage point, but the image is big enough that she probably could be cropped out if necessary. If the mushroom clouds were shown by themselves, there might be some ambiguity, but over cities? If there wasn't already a war, there most certainly would be one after that.

I think 2.1 is a little too busy if reduced to wiki-size.

1.1, 3.2, and 3.3 are okay.

Also, 2.1 didn't look like missiles at all to me - more like any kind of connections.

Regarding my suggestion, I should've been more specific...what I had in mind was a crop of the screens showing the US and Russia's ICBM paths. That might not work well, but something along those lines would work well from a thematic standpoint as that was the big fear regarding WWIII back in the day.

I would like to add for consideration a few images from the classic anti-ww3 film, The Day After (links go to imgur).

I'd be happy to crop and edit a picture to make it wiki-size if one is chosen.

1. Bombs going off, with lens flare.

2. Oh, this isn't going to end well (for him).

3. Another view of the bombs going off, without lens flare.

EDIT: 4. A crop of 1.1 with just a couple of the explosions.

I think that Willbyr has the idea of that scene from WarGames with the Big Board map of the Earth that shows projected nuke missile paths as the world's superpowers launch their doomsday payloads. Admittedly, this would be a highly simplified graphic surrogate, but it might do. Depictions of cities getting nuked tend to happen one at a time on-screen, such as during Terminator 3. The only other depiction of mass nuking I can think of comes from Richard Condie's The Big Snit which shows poor Santa Claus dodging a skyful of ICBM's.

A bit of zooming out in my browser seems to indicate that they will look like colorful world maps covered with almost invisible lines and a smattering of bright spots. (A shame, because they actually look quite good at full size.)
