New theme music also a boxA better image would help a lot here, as it's a visual trope. The current image is...I don't even know what's going on there.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Wait I thought we were renaming this trope?
And I was expecting Ghostly Glow type things to fit under the new ghost lights trope as well, so confused.
Well Will-o'-the-Wisp has been launched. So... What should we do now? Rename Ghost Lights?
Has the overlapping examples been fixed?
MAX POWER KILL JEEEEEEEEWWWWWI was going to go on a rant about how the image is an example of the Hitodama Lights trope, and should be moved there rather than left on the supertrope...and then I actually looked at it. The hitodama is kinda off in the corner, practically invisible if you don't know what you're looking for. Definitely a bad image.
Yep, put a bunch of ideas here should we open up a thread?
Well, has anyone disagreed with the split? I don't think so, and in this case it may be best to write up sandboxes for the future supertrope and the Japanese subtrope.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanYou mean splitting off a general Ghostly Glow trope? Okay, but I think it should also include ghosts being semitransparent or washed-out in color, as the they go hand in hand: standard Rule of Perception-compliant way(s) to visually depict a ghost.

Rhymes with "Protracted."Just to clarify, this YKTTW is dealing specifically with Will-o'-the-Wisp type phenomena and the Ghostly Lights supertrope will be dealt with later, yes?
I'm asking because the YKTTW mentions the Will-o'-the-Wisp is sometimes (rarely) helpful, which isn't the case in any folklore I know - the Will-o'-the-Wisp tends to be the either condemned souls trying to lead people to their deaths or astray or trickster spirits/fairies trying to lead fools astray. The most "helpful" Will-o'-the-Wisp legends I know of are the ones that "predict" that a death or funeral will happen soon rather than leading anyone astray.
Helpful examples of ghostly lights are usually different (but very similar) type of folklore or legend, that are often confused with Will-o'-the-Wisp but aren't really the same thing.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Well, now it's time for the Ghost Lights supertrope.

Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Since I see the YKTTW sprang from this thread I'll say here what I said there, namely, that we should not be using anime fanspeak for tropes that are not exclusively anime or Japanese.
Agreed. This is a Japanese term for a Japanese trope.
The supertrope (to Hitodama Light and Will-o'-the-Wisp) of "Supernatural Lights" needs a name crowner, and only words that have been adopted into English need apply.

Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Is there a reason we need a crowner instead of just using Ghost Lights?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanExactly what non-Japanese examples are there? A Hitodama is strictly a Japanese mythos thing.
It was my understanding that the super trope was going to cover stuff like Ghostbusters having glowing ghosts, not just balls of lights like will'o'the wisps and Hitodamas.
(See page 2, especially posts 49&50)

Link to TRS threads in project mode here. Before we do anything, I suggest removing certain examples.
For instance, the Pokemon entry. It's more Will-O'-Wisp than Hitodama.
Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life.Actually the animation on that attack is a Hitodama, the anime especially loves to use them for ghost Pokemon, I am pretty sure they just renamed it that in English.

In western works, Mark of the Beast and Red Eyes, Take Warning are FAR more common for Possession / mind control than the glowing outline. In fact, I don't think we'd see it EXCEPT for things influenced by East Asian Media.
