I never had entire songs, but I had really unusual guitar and electronic effects from time to time.
You mean like Paul McCartney's "Yesterday"?
No, that doesn't happen to me. My dreams, however, can play already existing songs perfectly.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page. When they eventually make a machine to record dreams I'm so gonna record that shit. It's awesome.
Personally I've had everything, from existing songs to tracks I've made myself to entirely "new" music in a variety of different styles. Mostly revolving around subtle ambient washes.
In a couple of instances I've actually been able to use some melodies in actual tracks, when I happened to fall asleep with my laptop on, and immediately record just as I woke up. These are among some of the tracks I'm most proud of actually. I should do that more often.

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here. This is probably my best one:
I once had a dream that I met Dennis Linde, the songwriter best known for "Burning Love" and "Goodbye Earl". This had to be at least five years after he died. But he and I were at some kind of potluck or something, and he told me that he saw something in me. I was in tears because he is probably my favorite songwriter. And he gave me a suggestion for a novelty country song about a broken heart, with the line "I'm gonna need four arms just to hold my beer".
Thankfully I woke up right after it ended and wrote down every lyric while it was still fresh in my mind. I actually have the song (and many others) registered in BMI, so I wonder if I could get permission from his estate to give him a co-writer's credit?
One time in high school I was asleep on the bus and I dreamt a House track that samples "Sparkle In Your Eyes" by Cameo. Or rather, the intro of one.
I have one where I can't remember anything except it was sort of pop-ish, had a female singer and sounded REALLY good in the dream. Also a thought: if my mind can come up with stuff like that why can't I write a song just as good when I'm awake?
Once thought of an awesome groove metal riff a few years back. I really think that could've been a great song...
These days I try to shoot awake to go hum the tune into my mic.

Another dream I had imagined a sort of R&B-like synth track. I actually wrote the music down for that one to the best of my ability while I still remembered it.
I sometimes hear snippets of music making itself up in my head as I'm falling asleep, often a sort of ambient/electronic/drone-type thing. I can only recall actually hearing that sort of made-up-in-my-head music in my dreams a couple of times.
Somehow you know that the time is right.A while back I had a dream that was some country song singing about octopus brains
One time I dreamed of a song that already existed, I don't think that counts for anything but I do remember I dreamed of it because I liked it so much and wanted to listen to it again when I woke up.
(if anyone's curious, it's Helix by Justice)
I had this one dream where my mom and I were running from cops shooting at us, and I think she pulled a You Shall Not Pass! on me, and as I was running, the chorus of some rap song played. I don't know if it actually exists or not, and I don't remember much of how it went, but I think the latter half went something like "duck the cops, stand around and get SHOT!" And get shot I did.
Me? I dreamt of some Hayley Williams look-alike, complete with a red streak in her brown hair, angrily strutting down the pier. My perspective in the dream is similar to a tracking shot filming at her face. The accompanying tune? Generic power chords over a pseudo-Shirley Manson pleading "Why don't you want me?" again and again. I think I listened to Garbage's "Why Do You Love Me" a few days prior to this dream.
Another recent thread has a few posts covering about Garbage. It was those posts that made me remember of this dream. Not to say that the dream is a great surreal experience. I'm not interested in pop-punk and whatever genres Garbage are associated with. In other words, I find that dream disappointing.
Here's something kind of interesting. I had a dream that I was learning to play "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash on guitar and figured out it was only three chords: G, C, and D. The interesting thing is when I woke up, I actually looked it up out of curiosity and those are the actual chords of the song. Granted, it's an incredibly common progression, but it's kind of crazy that I was able to recognize the actual chords by listening to the song in my dream.

I've played a few easy songs in my dreams.
I was so hyped for Devin Townsend's Deconstruction that once I dreamed I was listening a new song from it. It didn't happen to be on the actual album, but I remember it sounded pretty awesome.
No regret shall pass over the threshold!I dreamt up some organ thing that probably already exists, but I can't exactly identify it. The dream involved a murder accusation, which is probably the only reason I remember any of it.
Not a new song but I had a dream a while back that I was playing the game Asherons Call and they had put these new weapons in the game that play a song when you have them equipped (mine was this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RENIRXApuW8) which I thought was pretty cool until I thought about what would happen if there were a hundred people in one place all with different songs playing from their weapons
I know this is an old thread but I had a few more recently: 1. This song that was kind of disco-y and had a female singer, only lyrics I heard were "You can always call me (something I can't remember, started with F) 2. This song with vocals like Mazzy Star which was talking about the seasons and saying "Summer is always the best"
One time I dreamt of some rap song that may or may not exist. I still remember the melody to the chorus (but not most of the words)
I do know at least one of my dream journals has a bit of staff notation, where I used my Casio keyboard to pick out the 7/4 riff that was in my dream.
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883!This was a dream written by someone in a Youtube comment section, not mine.
Let's call the guy who dreamed this Neil. Neil dreamed that he was holding a grenade very tightly. He had the feeling that the grenade would explode any time soon. But he still held it in his palm, believing that it was the right thing to do. Several seconds has passed. The grenade disappeared. No explosion occured. An oddly long pause ensued. Neil's vision gradually became a shade of red. Then he heard a familiar chorus. It took him some time to figure out which song it was. Soon, he found himself lying on nothingness, submerging into that oddly serene Shania Twain song.
"You're still the one that I love/ The only one I dream of/ You're still the one I kiss good night"
I frequently have music from my collection show up in my dreams.
The coolest thing, is that if I stop and listen, I can hear every detail. Lucid dreaming is the best.
My angry rant blog!
Ever have a dream where you hear a song and it isn't a real life song but one your own brain/subconscious made up? I have had several, though there is one I remember best. It was sort of slow and sad brit rock and only had one lyric I remember which was something like "The lie, it makes you dirty"? which is really weird but kind of cool
