There's hope for the world, anyway. The FCC may have repealed, but they can't do a thing about lawsuits.

And plenty of those are coming, believe me.

Also, back to the hate mentality - Redditors love their comic books and superheroes, understandably. But it's pretty frustrating that they didn't understand the philosophy of many heroes - being the good guy means doing what's truly morally good. Like continuing to petition, protest and campaign, not doxxing or sending death threats or sitting on your ass, typing hate on a website that Pai doesn't even use or has any reason to look at. Those actions some people pride themselves on really achieves nothing.

They will be coming but they don't actually stand a chance in hell of actually doing anything. The damage is done and the internet is basically just on lifesupport and plenty of people are salivating to pull the plug.

They can just start doing it right now, the FCC isn't going to do anything about it there is absolutely no reason to actually wait.

They can go back to attempting to influence elections as well by blocking websites of candidates that they don't like as well, they have done it before with blocking text messages.

There's still plenty pushing for a restoration of the laws. This isn't the end.

The Dems won in several states, anyway. If they can pull one off in Alabama, there's a good chance that Midterm 2018 will be blue. Then, I think, they'll put the rules back.

And Mueller's working on his investigation. There's very little ways Trump can legally sack him. Trump's approval rating is also going down each day, and with several Democratic state victories, there's gonna be a day he has to leave and take the early-onset Alzheimer's with him. Seriously, I'm pretty sure Trump does have some already.

I know that cynicism is popular, but it kills a lot of things. It does plenty of harm, and isn't healthy for anyone's well being. I used to think like that, before I stopped browsing Reddit frequently, before I got counseling, before I thought deeper about the person I was, before I headed to the US and arrived in an environment positive enough to remove any lasting self-esteem problems. Honestly, if anyone wants to stop being cynical, try not being it.

I wouldn't say there's no chance. Part of the FCC's problem right now is that 1) there were a ton of fake comments using stolen names and I Ds and not only did the FCC ignore the Attorney General of New York State when he tried to look into it, they actively refused to cooperate with the investigation and 2) Pai didn't actually follow a lot of the rules. He's supposed to rebut the comments and explain why the 99% of the comments pushing to keep Net Neutrality are wrong, explain exactly why the decision placing Net Neutrality into place was wrong and explain exactly why removing Net Neutrality is best for the consumers. He did none of those.

What I'm saying basically boils down to: the lawsuits may not succeed, but they have a very strong foundation, almost entirely because Pai rushed this through in a really dumb manner. Also there's a more than zero chance that Pai himself might know something about all those fake comments. He probably was just taking advantage of them, but his behaviour surrounding them is really suspicious.

Not Three Laws compliant.

Pai was at best an opportunist. At worst he's an outright accomplice or even perpetrator of fraud on a massive scale.

[up] Yep. Boston Bomber aside, there's been plenty.

I mean, many users are people in high school and with self-esteem problems. Not the most healthy environment. So to make themselves feel better they cast themselves as the hero in their imaginations. Normal daydream, nothing wrong about that, but it would be nice if they regulated it to fictional villains.

Unfortunately, in their desperate quest for self-esteem, they do some very irritating things. They convince themselves they're the smartest, everyone in school (who are idiots) should bow to their genius, even if they know fuck all about the subject. (Which is why r/badhistory exists) They feel angry all the time, they try to find an outlet. Common outlets chosen are women, fandoms, whatever anybody is targeting at the moment. They dedicate their time to spewing some of the worst hate you can see on the internet. Others want to be part of something bigger, but for some reason, they always go for the most extreme movements, hence all the bloodthirsty anarchists and the alt-right. The things they choose to be angry at are the "villains" in their minds. And because they're the hero, they're obviously totally good people.

I only lurked on reddit, but I was exposed to it so much it affected my mind too. Seeing what it entailed and getting away from it is something I'll be eternally grateful for. There's only three subreddits I browse now, which are decent and friendly.

Yes, I'm sure the ISP's really want a legal challenge where they lose straight-off because the regulations haven't changed yet.

Yeah, there's a reason that "we did it reddit!" is a ironic meme. When Reddit decides to put their heads together... they fuck up spectacularly.

#514: Dec 14th 2017 at 6:06:18 PM

Why's that?

Well, for one, trying to discuss a lot of social issues on reddit often feels like a waste of time. Especially if you're in a subreddit for a nerdier hobby (like a videogame, or anime) it's basically impossible to have a nuanced discussion about social issues without a bunch of status quo warriors and borderline alt-righters spouting the usual facile excuses; even if it's just ignorant people trying to have a discussion in good faith (hardly a guarantee) it gets a little annoying. These days with alt-right trolls proper running around it's also possible someone will follow you around and harass you if you run into someone particularly nasty.

You don't really have this problem so much on certain subs like gamerghazi (where people's agreement on a few basic things is implicit), but I generally avoid talking about social issues unless I'm stopping by one of those places.

I still think they're second to Tumblr in that department. Plus, a lot of the most hate-filled subreddits have been shut down (r/coontown, r/fatpeoplehate, etc.).

[up] Tumblr can be misguided, but they’re not as bad as Reddit’s worst (r/The_Donald, r/LateStageCapitalism, etc.) and nowhere near as toxic as 4chan or Voat.

Also, looks like this affects Canada too.

[up] Honestly, Tumblr has its bad side but most of its users are reasonable. I've personally friends with two, and they're some of the nicest and wisest people I've known.

The difference is that those on tumblr aren't afraid to speak out against the anon hate, or SJ Ws. One of my friends was in the middle of a greatly annoying campaign by 0.25% of the OW tumblr fandom about the black Mercy design. Those were actual SJ Ws complaining, and a massive chunk of the fandom were furiously pointing out that Mercy was Swiss in design to begin with, and black Mercy was only a concept.

Another one was where a frustrated user called out a good portion of tumblr for fearing men. She pointed out that plenty of men agreed with feminism, treated their girlfriends right, that she felt a lot of tumblrites didn't have actual friendships with men, and that sex is a wonderful thing if you experience it right. Hundreds of users backed her up, defending their male friends and their boyfriends/husbands.

Tumblr also fact-checks frequently and doesn't parrot historical misconceptions. They properly analyze and users are well-versed in the subjects they talk about. A mistake occurs in a post, math majors/science majors/art majors/others instantly come into offer helpful advice, and not start fights. That's very good for me.

Meanwhile, those on reddit who try to call out the site get drowned out immediately. And redditors trying to be smart leads to plenty of historical misconceptions (Treaty of Versailles -> Hitler, Chiang Kai-shek was a terrible leader in all aspects, Rommel was a great logistician)

Yeah, a good amount of hate subreddits have been shut down. But r/conspiracy, r/The_Donald, r/theredpill and r/stormfront are still on. And others too.

From my experience with Reddit, it's not quite as conservative as people often make it out to be. (Save for specific conservative subs like r/The_Donald.)

If anything, on the default subs like r/news and r/pics, the commenters are almost obnoxiously liberal. And pessimistic. And nihilistic.

For instance, the current net neutrality threads. Go to one of those threads and say something even remotely positive, and prepare to be downvoted and called out to oblivion for showing ANY of that awful evil optimism.

I had to unsub a lot of default subs due to the negativity of the comment sections.

@Will

From my understanding, it's very likely that websites outside of the U.S. could be affected. Businesses and trading are gonna get hit hard the most if your ISP decides that they don't want you buying products that are not from the U.S. or will throttle your ability to buy stuff outside of the U.S. because those sites didn't pay for a fast lane.

Most significantly, there's the fact that apparently a lot of Canadian traffic is routed through American IS Ps, so if they throttle something...

If you're a gamer, you could be affected to. Nothing would stop an ISP from throttling or even blocking your connection if you tried to play a FPS or MMORPG online. MMO games would be hit the most since some still use subscription models and that's gonna dry up if their players can't afford a "fast lane" for their games on top of their sub fees.
