I'm not 100% sure what's happening there...something more clear wouldn't be a bad idea.
Not a good image, the current. Wouldn't be disinclined to remove it.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe current is not very good. But I wonder, how else would you illustrate it? For the untrained eye, an original character of a work they've never read/seen/played is just another character amongst a lot they don't know about, unless it's blatantly obvious, which would lead us to another problem.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."As I suggested, how about a picture of Jenny Everywhere with a few characters from different series, with the caption being a link to her page? Technically she's an open source character, but since she appears mostly in fan content and fan stories, she likely one of the better known OCs on the net.
You'd have to do a damn good job with the in-picture context, then, because I can't say as I'm familiar with her or her appearance in the slightest.
Moon◊"Better known" is never an argument, unless maybe if you get to Superman or Super Mario levels.

Check out my fanfiction!@5: I've never even heard of that character until you mentioned her, so no.
As defined on the page, I don't think Jenny Everywhere would even be an example of original character, since:
- Under the main definition, it says an original character is created for a fan fiction. Jenny is not used in fan fiction for the most part, from what I can tell.
- The DeviantArt definition seems to just be "character created by me, for my work". Jenny Everywhere is a Public Domain Character; she was not created by most of the people who use her in their stories.
Well, at the very least, I feel the current imagine should be removed. This might be one of those tropes that can't really be summed up in a picture, unless it's outright parodying the trope, which brings us back to the problem I mentioned in the header of making it seem like it's an inherently bad trope.
Parodying a trope doesn't imply it's bad, though. Maybe find a fanart of some work where OCs have an "OC tag" or something
I think the current is a poor image, but not pullable bad.
Check out my fanfiction!Current image is definitely Keep Until Better Image Suggested, yes.

Clock is set.
Clock's up; locking for inactivity/lack of consensus. No action is to be taken based on this thread.
Not sure what I should file this under, but... I feel like there could be a better image for Original Character. The current image gives the feeling that all Original Characters are inherently bad, on top of the fact that it doesn't really illustrate it properly. (It took me a few seconds to realize that it was suppose to be a blatant copy of a canon character, parodying the more Sturgeon's Law examples of OCs. Even then though, I thought it was just poking fun at the fact that Shadow has a lot of traits of a bad Original Character.)
Tropes Are Tools after all. They are nether inherently bad or good. It's all down to the person who's using them if they're bad or good. As such, I feel like a better page image that doesn't give the feel that Original Characters are inherently bad is in order.
My suggestion is for a picture that has an OC with a bunch of canons. Maybe something involving a picture of Jenny Everywhere or TV Tropes own Tropetan in someway.
