Patrick Warburton is reprising the role of The Tick from the 2001 live action series in a new series to be made by Amazon.

I'm not all that enthused. Warburton was the only really good thing about that show and he's quite a bit older now.

Necro Time!

A) It's not Patrick Warburton as Tick, rather it's Peter Serafinowicz, but Warburton is still around as producer.

B) I just saw the pilot episode and as someone who's seen the animated show, holy shit, was this reintroduction great. It's got that nice blend of humor one would expect from anything related to The Tick and drama one would find in the usual superhero TV show. Peter really works as The Tick and it's great how they gave Arthur a much deeper backstory than just "ex-accountant who got fired because everybody in his workplace was getting spooked by his moth suit."

Also, props to actually lifting a line from the cartoon! ("You're not going crazy Arthur, you're going sane in a crazy world!")

So yes, Amazon, I would like to see more. I would love to see this be your next original series!

I saw the trio of pilots yesterday. I liked The Tick a good deal...but if I could only choose one to go to series, it would be Jean Claude Van Johnson, which had me laughing more often and harder.

[up][up] As someone who has now watched the pilot, I have to wholeheartedly agree! As I said before, the general concept of this version (A gritty Marvel Netflix show with the Tick in it) is brilliant.

I'm certain there are those out there that didn't like the darker and edgier tone of the show, saying the overall setting is just not the Tick.

However, just take a look at the other incarnations.

The cartoon made for TV was mostly made to be a send up of the other tv superhero cartoons at the time.

The last Tick tv comedy which was made to broadcast on TV, was more like other cable TV comedies of the time.

So in many respects it's only fitting that this new pilot, being made to broadcast on an internet based streaming service is more like other super hero shows that are being broadcast on internet streaming services.

As for the pilot itself, there's a lot to say.

SPOILERS BELOW!

Firstly, I got a kick out of the conspiracy theorist spin that was given to Arthur. It's a good twist to his character and it fits the "lampooning shows like Netflix Dare Devil" concept like a rubber glove.

The Tick is....well he's the Tick. Still as amazingly hammy and still delivering silly yet insightful speeches throughout the pilot. I like that they're going for a more unhinged depiction rather than just a goofy idiot with a heart of gold. So far, I'm sold on the perfomance of Peter Serafinowicz but there is a slight nitpick. His voice for the Tick is pretty much the same as Townsend Coleman, I would've liked it if they tried making a new voice for the Tick that wasn't attempted before. Like imagine the Tick having a voice that's similar to Mr. Lawrence (Plankton's VA), I dunno.

Let me repeat, I don't a have any real problems with Serafinowicz's performance. I just would've preferred it if the Tick had a voice that wasn't like a previous version.

Next, I have to commend Ben Edlund for introducing and playing with this idea that the Tick is actually just a hallucination of Arthur's damaged mind, though also stating that it's very likely he's real.

Not only is it a fresh take on the character that makes a disturbing load of sense (And might even be a nod to the Tick's origins in the original comic) but I could also see it as a hook for potential viewers to keep watching the show, if only to find out if The Tick actually exists.

Then again, it's also possible that the whole thing could've just been Edlund showing what would happen if Arthur reacted more realistically upon seeing a tall muscular man in a blue tick outfit acting like he's in a completely different show.

This new take leads into something I particularly loved about ALL Tick incarnations, their lack of status quo between adaptations. While the basic skeleton is always kept, each version of the Tick is drastically apart from each other when it comes to the actual details. Meaning that all incarnations, I feel, contain the same spirit in some ways at the very least.

Yes, this pilot is certainly the darkest of all the versions, but then again it's directly lampooning a much darker source material than the others so it's not without reason.

Plus, I'm going to be perfectly honest. It's not really that dark.

Maybe it's because I've seen a shitload of dark and gritty works but the pilot isn't among the darkest superhero based shows I've seen (Hi, Jessica Jones). I think it's more humorous and quirky than people give it credit for.

Arthur's backstory is indeed more serious and is tragic in the right way and well done, but it still involves seeing his parents inadvertently get killed by the Fab Five (his favorite super team), watching the five themselves get killed, and then witnessing the Terror walk towards him, pretend to pull a quarter out of his hand and reveal that nothing was there and then slurp down the remainder of the ice cream bowl his dad got for him.

Of course, we can't talk over the top without getting into the Tick's first fight scene. Gloriously no selling bullet storms, easily knocking baddies away, tearing down a secret base by himself, and having it blow up while laughing like a goddamn maniac. It's byotiful!

So for those who are worried about how much seriousness is in the pilot, have no fear. While we probably won't be seeing this Tick fighting against the Hey's anytime soon, the pilot is more playful and has more fun with it's setting than you might think.

And who knows what these guys'll do if the series is picked up, we might even see the third appearance of Barry later on!

I also like that the makers ended the pilot with it looking like Arthur got shot by the goons. Yeah, yeah, sequel hook for potential episode two. But I like to think they ended it that way because of the possibility that it wouldn't get picked up. Therefore, leaving the series with bitter implications of a dead Arthur.

Overall, I hope to god this gets picked up because of the unbelievable potential to be had with this series. I would like for there to be another set of expies of American Maid and Die Fledermouse like the Warburton version if they're going to include those characters in anyway down the road (you know, assuming the pilot gets picked up).

Well, I hope y'all enjoyed my wall of text. Can't help it! I really like anything involved with the Tick and this is a promising start to what I hope will be a new series!

Oh my god, yes to this. I couldn't even go beyond the first episode of Jessica Jones. I mean, I love the cast (and I pray there'll be some fun in Luke Cage), but I can only swallow so much darkness...

Btw, guess who got his own Work page??? grin

"The first season ... is going to be split into two parts of six episode each.''

Oh hell yes. A live action Tick show that has the humour of the original. I saw one episode of the Warburton Tick, kind of randomly, and I wasn't impressed. I don't recall there being any superheroing in that episode. Plus they had American Maid and Die Fledermaus, but they changed their names. But this? This nails Tick's personality. The joy. The ridiculous words of wisdom. I hope that this is enough of a success that we see a bunch of the Tick's supporting cast. They may be saving that for the second half of the season.

Not all the way through the first batch of episodes but I 've develped two Theories; Over Kill is one of the Patriot five who somehow survived and Superion is actually the Terror who faked his own death.

Just did my quick binge of the first 6. The pilot had me thinking "OK at best, but it has potential". The opening scence for episode 2 sold me. I want more, and I want it yesterday.

The show really finds its comic footing in the second episode. The pilot was aiming for funny but felt subtly off, darker and more dramatic. I'm glad they changed the Tick's suit. I didn't totally hate the idea of it looking somewhat more organic, but the suit in the pilot ended up being grotesque in a way that doesn't really suit the character.

Ms. Lint is a great villain/co-protagonist. Having her around really ties the show's serialized elements together nicely.

Superian being the Terror in disguise seems unlikely at this point. If Superian were already out of the picture, it doesn't seem like the Terror would need to remain in hiding, or that he'd want Arthur's anti-alien suit back so badly.

That scene with the bus was pretty great. There are superhero shows and movies that aren't comedies (not naming any names, Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgment) that don't nail what's so satisfying about simply watching superheroes save people the way this show does.

I just started this series and am very much enjoying it.

It's a wonderful antidote to the whole Marvel Netflix doom and gloom.

Yet still surprisingly dark.

Hey. So I finished a major Tick marathon. The first 12 issues of the comic, every episode of the 94 animated series, every episode of the 2001 series and every episode of the new Amazon series. I knew the 94 series was great, having seen most of it as a kid. I guess the 2001 series was okay, and I loved the new series. I liked that the show was more serial, because we haven't really had anything like that in the previous series.

Tick is getting a new costume in Season 2. It looks more streamlined than the one he wore for most of Season 1, which sometimes looked like fabric with plastic bits attached. I like that this suit is more uniform, kind of like the suit he wore in the pilot, but not as ugly looking, though I do appreciate that the pilot suit looked more like a bug's exoskeleton.

What's gonna happen in Season 2? I think we're gonna find out that the Terror wanted Superian dead because alien boy is actually secretly evil. Maybe he's readying Earth for an alien invasion? Terror's line at the end about "taking Earth back" just before Superian arrived seems to suggest something like that. AEGIS is probably going to be an antagonistic force. One thing I'd like to see is a bit more of the Tick. Season 1 was all about Arthur, and he's always been the heart of any Tick series, but I'm hoping Tick gets more screen-time while trying to find out who he is and where he came from.
