I remember the first FPS I played, the soundtrack just blew me away with power and courage, No I'm not talking about Halo or Call of Duty, I'm talking about the courage of Joe Griffin in Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, the main title is my favorite in my opinion, it feels as though it's a tribute to those who died in WW II, American or Japanese

I'd have to say Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Rayman Legends, Hotline Miami and all three Mass Effect games. Dragon Age: Origins would also be there just for its main menu music.

Ooooh! Favorite soundtracks! Let's see...anything by Alexander Brandon, anything by Yoko Shimomura, anything by Jake Kaufman, anything by nervous_testpilot, the Bit_Trip Runner games had some good stuff, and the soundtrack in To The Moon was unforgettable...

Nope. Can't pick a favorite. This has been in my head for while though.

Electronic Super Joy. It's one of the most unorthodox soundtracks I've heard in a videogame, for the same reason that I liked the music in Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt-it's throbbing electronica, club music, house music, maybe, EDM. You don't hear that in videogames (or anime). And it's really, really fantastic. The game is an absorbing experience in part because of the music.

Blazblue(well save for CP's remixes) is my favorite from Daisuke Ishiwatari. Sonic franchise period is fantastic with SA 2 being my overall favorite still(although SA 1 had better character themes), Skies of Arcadia is really good as well. And of course we can't forget the Jet Set Radio games. Ni GHTS into dreams has a beautiful soundtrack too, as did Soul Calibur 1+2.

I'll second Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi's Island. They have really good music.

The Kirby series has awesome music too.

And Paper Mario's soundtrack is great. grin

On the top of my head, the Metal Gear OSTs (including MGR) are something I treasure.

The Sims music gives me a fair amount of nostalgia, though.

My absolute favorites aside, other games/series that I'd mention are The Legend Of Zelda, Golden Sun, Xenoblade, and the Mother series.

...Especially the last one.

Mass Effect 2's soundtrack was killer.

How could I forget this? The trilogy is unquestionably the best game series of all time, and the music was sublime, with the second game especially having a large range of awesome tunes. One of the best being the trailer, Heart of Courage.

In fact let's look at some of the tunes that are good enough to be on my iPhone.

M4 Part II

Callista

Techno Madness

The Illusive Man

The Normandy Reborn

Heart of Courage

Happiness

That's a lot of tunes that are in amongst the proper licensed music I would have on the phone, and that's not counting tracks such as Tali, Kasumi and Suicide Mission. And these are not gamey themes like the ones in Donkey Kong or Killer Instinct, great music but these are fit for film or orchestra.

The Arkham series also had some awesome music such as Ain't No Place For A Hero and Church of the Poisoned Mind. Saints Row had an awesome selection of licensed music as well if they count, from Misery Business to Power to Still Swingin, and a host of in game tracks that rock if licensed tunes don't count. I still maintain the Hail to the Chief remix should be used for the 2016 Presidential inauguration, it's that good.

Can't really decide on just one, so I'll list a Top Ten (in no particular order):

  • Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut
  • Kirby's Return to Dreamland
  • Gubble 2: Zymbot Quest
  • Sid & Al's Incredible Toons/The Incredible Toon Machine
  • Spyro The Dragon
  • Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!
  • Spyro: Year of the Dragon
  • Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
  • Crisis Force
  • Sonic Unleashed

If I had to pick just one, though, it would be Sonic Adventure.

Well, I'm not sure what exactly counts as retro...but Donkey Kong Country was mentioned earlier, and there have been several references to franchises like Final Fantasy that at least have some "retro" games.

I also really like the soundtracks for Skate Or Die 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. tongue I didn't list the former because then my top ten would become a top eleven.

I mentioned Sonic as a whole for that very reason, it had 16 bit masterpieces. Also would Saturn era count as retro?

And so little Chrono Trigger mention? While only like, 2 battle themes were really of note(Lavos' and Magus) the rest of the soundtrack was fantastic.

Now that I think of it, Civilization V may have taken Sim Copter's place as my favorite as my favorite VG soundtrack. All that wonderful worldwide-inspired music...
