Just a Face and a Caption: Asian Airhead

This whole trope has problems. But the image bothers me the most.

I don't know who this woman is. She might be an actress who plays ditzy roles, but the image itself simply looks like a candid shot of a girl at a party making a cutesy pose. Which effectively makes it JAFAAC. The bubblegum barely gives context.

In that case, it's really mean-spirited. The discussion page is already wondering the same things about this whole page. Hell, I would be happy if this page did not exist at all. But a trope is a trope. Also 500+ incoming is fan-freaking-tastic. So here is the current image. The caption really makes it mean:

"That sound you hear is the wind rushing between her ears."

She looks like an Asian Valley Girl (gum blowing is stereotypical ditzy behavior). It's not great, but it's definitely not JAFAAC.

Do you have any suggestions?

Yeah. I have an idea for one. I just have to go do something first before I have time to take screenshots.

However, how do non-Western examples fit? If the majority of the characters in a show are supposed to be Asian already, does a ditz not count as this trope? I'm specifically thinking of anime and manga.

It's just like how people keep bringing up The Ditz for requiring a new image, but nobody has been able to find a better one than what's currently there.

Okay. That's the thing with anime.

I just don't know who the current is in the picture. I just hope it isn't offending someone.

Is there an edit to the picture that would make it look less candid?

Candid? What do you mean?

The lighting. The red-eye. The blown-out highlights. It's not a screen cap. Someone personally took this photo of Jamie Chung at some party.

But I am defeated for once. I've researched every listed example and come up short.

I don't think candid means what you think it does. It's probably from The Real World, though.

I meant candid not as in blunt or truthful, but in a photographic sense. You know, an informal photograph?

But I think you're right. It's so odd, though, that this is the only photograph on the internet. Perhaps it was a screenshot after all.

Well, I feel this thread will go nowhere, so I am all for closing it up if that is usually what happens in these situations. Don't wanna waste space.

However, can we please source the image as from The Real World show? It looks very much like Jamie Chung, and she was on that show. So that would help a lot I think.

I think the current image is fine. Similar to The Ditz, she looks like an airhead. I don't know who that is and I don't understand why that matters.

I agree that an image source should be added if it is known, but that has zero impact (let alone "help a lot") on the suitability of the image.

Okay. My concern was that this was a shot of just some normal girl out there somewhere. In that case, it would't be right.

But it's a celebrity on a reality show, and that makes a bit of difference.

I have no idea who the current is, but if she's from The Real World and was known for being the trope on that show, then I'm good with keeping it.
