Poor Image: Mirror Monster

This image is cluttered and incomprehensible. Where's the mirror in this image anyway?

Keep Until Better Image Suggested; while you can't see the actual edges of the mirror, you can see the reflections of the people.

I can't tell what the hell is going on in that image. 2.1 is better.

3.1 is too close to The Mirror Shows Your True Self. The Sleepy Hollow pics are too indistinct. The Image Links pic is alright, but just alright. I'm still partial to this one◊.

6 for me as well. I'll have to review the others once I get home.

7.1 is really good too.

6 so far has been the only one to communicate the trope, the rest have too little focal depth to know the monster only exists in the mirror or fall too close to The Mirror Shows Your True Self.

I'm gonna have to give the edge to 6, mainly because it's clear that the monster is only in the mirror. 7.1 is a little too ambiguous, but is a great addition for the Image Links page if it's not already there. 7.2 looks more like a porthole than a mirror.

I prefer 6. 7.1 would've been great if it had shown her back so we saw there wasn't a monster there.

Eh ... what they said goes for me as well.

The current is poor. #6 is good, but I like #7.1 much better, and if you look at how far forward the creature is reaching with his right hand (the one on the left of the picture), if he was really standing behind her, at least part of that hand should be showing on the right edge of the image above her real arm.

See? It's extended at least as far forward as her elbow, and should show in the real world as far as the semicircle I've drawn.

Hrrrrm, decisions, decisions. 6 reminds me of the illustrations on Roald Dahl books, while 7.1 is prettier. Both are visually interesting, but I have to go with 7. Cause it's pretty.

Hmmmm...good point. This will probably have to go to a crowner; after Maddy's analysis I could flip a coin for 6 or 7.1.

Part of the reason I did the analysis was that there was something more disturbing about it than just the image should have been. So I looked at what could be bugging me about it, and that's when I saw what wasn't there. If the claw showed on the right side of the image, it would be clear that the monster is physically present and standing behind her. But it doesn't show. So either it's present in the real world and invisible except in the mirror (scary), or it's not in the real world at all— it's in the mirror, and reaching out of it toward her (scarier). It's reaching past her reflection, toward the surface of the mirror — it's in the mirror and reaching out of it.

But all of this is on a subconscious level if you don't stop to think about it.

Holy crap, I just realized something...the creature's claws on its right hand are cracking the mirror and actually protruding through slightly. I noticed the cracks right away this morning but I didn't see that until just now.

I didn't even see the cracks until they got mentioned, I'm now split but that's what a crowner's for.

7.1/23 does work, starting to get a weird reverse vampire thing from 6 now.

Is it part of the illustration that the monster is on both sides - behind the gal and behind the glass?
