In comic books it is.
Speaking of terrible costume upgrades, worst costume upgrade? Penance. Full stop.
Speedball feels guilty for what happened and takes it upon himself to be a better person and make amends to the world for his mistake? Not a bad idea.
Speedball does this by crafting an Iron Maiden into a wearable outfit that makes him BLEED and SUFFER for all the lives his mistake cost? The fuck?

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.YMMV on that. IMHO even that is a terrible idea. Comics don't need more Fun Personified characters turning into moping emo messes wracked with guilt over their mistakes.
I didn't say emo mess. I said trying to make amends. Speedball in Avengers Arena is a perfect example of how you can use your mistakes as a building ground to try and create a better future and keep others from the same mistakes you made, without being a weeping emo mess that stabs himself with his costume.

X-Men X-Pert, my blog where I talk about X-Men comics. The whole Penance thing was worth it for this.◊
Also when the Superior Six inevitably turn into the Sinister Six again, they should keep the black and red suits. They're slick.

nyo ho hoYes, Academy. Sorry, I'm having a very busy day. >.<
EDIT: ...and I had totally forgotten that the Penance suit doesn't have eyes. How does he see?
You know, I could have forgiven the Penance suit if it had only appeared in one issue, in which he got in a big fight, and spent the entire thing running around trying to figure out where his opponents were, smacking into things and causing the spikes to jab deeper when he runs into them, and finally going, "F*cking hell, what was I thinking?!"

The very best, like no one ever was. Check out my Spider-Man fanfic here! [1]Yall had better stop hatin on Penance. She was alright even if every other artist seemed to forget she (and the rest of her family) were supposed to be black. Do race lifts count for upgraded costumes?
Getting rid of Blade's raincoat was probably for the better. Luke Cage probable looks better in the tank top than any costume whatsoever. Adding spikes and a chain to Ghost Rider's jacket were nice touches, as was the futuristic motor cycle. Wonder Woman looked better with pants. Making living laser an actual living laser was a good move, even if he still looks like a generic devil. Baby steps I suppose.
For outright bad "upgrades", how about every Hobgoblin after the first one. Mongoose too, for going from shaded and mysterious in With Foes Like These to an eye searing bright yellow in Thor Thunderstrike. Giving Spider-woman an open crown mask was stupid when it was done (this will totally throw off the people looking for me) and still looks stupid.
You know they aren't talking about THAT Penance, right?
Did anyone mention Wonder Woman's "practical" bike shorts outfit yet?
I agree Penny was my favourite Gen Xer
That said, disagree on Ghost Rider's bike. To me, his bike should always look old and grungy. A big, noisy, pollution-spewing beast.
I miss the Generation X Penance. Someone needs to use her again.
X-Men X-Pert, my blog where I talk about X-Men comics.@Cider: we're referring to Robbie Baldwin in a ridiculous costume made mostly of self-stabbing spikes because he needs to feel the PAIN OF EVERY DEAD STAMFORD CITIZEN TO USE HIS POWERS, not the Gen X-er
i don't know of movie costumes are off-limits, but Spidey's movie outfit◊ has started to grow on me.

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.I don't know, the soles of the feet really bug me. I do like the Raimi Spidey costume, though, even if as a kid it was borderline blasphemous that he had four webs both going up and down between the eyepieces instead of 3 up, 4 down, like in the comics.
The very best, like no one ever was. Check out my Spider-Man fanfic here! [1]He's going to be wearing his Ultimate costume in ASM 2 so the hideous one he had in ASM can be ignored.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsYeah, I'm glad it's looking more classic. Red/Blue Spidey will always be the best. I kinda prefer the bigger eyepieces.
That said, black suit Spidey is good, Spider-Armor was cool, but that might be the old video game nostalgia talking, and I actually do really like Otto's Superior redesign to the suit that he's got now. Not as good as the original, of course, but it looks sleek while still being "totally not a villain, guys."
The very best, like no one ever was. Check out my Spider-Man fanfic here! [1]I'm of the belief that Iron Man's third armor, the original red and gold◊ is the best look he's ever had. And I'm sure most people would agree that it's an improvement over the solid gold look.
Weird in a Can (updated M-F)I forgot how terrible Iron Man's armour was for a long time. The worst was when he added a nose. Oh, man, the nose.
X-Men X-Pert, my blog where I talk about X-Men comics.I was a big fan of Ultimate Iron Man's look, but I think the movie versions have superseded it as my favorite now.
I do agree it was a huge improvement over the previous one. But hardly that it is the best he ever had. In fact, I find it hideous. The mask is terrible and the body is silly.
I'm no fan of any Iron Man suit that uses Iron Spandex. That thing looks like something a cosplayer might throw together. >.<
