I think however you feel about the man's presidency, having a picture of President Obama's hope poster is just courting controversy and does a poor job of illustrating the trope.

A parody version of the hope image (like the one with Luke Skywalker) might be a better idea.

Please don't start IP threads this way. Either make a suggestion, or a case that the current image should be pulled.

"Eat more fiber" is also a suggestion, but that's totally not what "please make a suggestion in the original post of an Image Pickin' thread" means. In the context of IP, "make a suggestion" means "suggest an actual image" not "suggest an idea for an image".

Also please check the page source for URLs leading to previous IP discussions about the image. Previous threads: [1] and [2]

The point of that image is not that Obama is a Hope Bringer, it is that he was presented as one in that campaign. The poster is emblematic of the trope. A parody might be better, but a lot of the ones I have seen are just colored similarly, the pose in that poster is important I think, it looks leaderly/hopeful/reminiscent of the trope (especially chin raised and looking off into the middle distance). A parody would probably be missing the elements that make that image good. Would have to see an image. Current image isn't super awesome but I haven't seen anything that comes close.

That doesn't say Hope Bringer at all. It is just a kid with a goofy expression on his face.

A good replacement, if any, would probably be something completely different. Parodies rely on being familiar with the original. The original doesn't rely on being familiar with anything, including who that person is. The Obama "HOPE" poster works whether you have any context or not. A photograph of Obama would not work, nor does a poster in that style but lacking the semantic content of depicting a person looking confident and leaderly.

A different parody might be good for Hope Crusher, which does not have a page image.

Without any context, the original image is just a man in suit looking wistfully off into the distance. He isn't seen bringing hope to anyone else in the image nor is there any despair he is acting against.

"[J]ust a man in suit looking wistfully off into the distance" is pretty good.

It's not a bad image. He looks hopeful.

I'd rather have a fictional example here. The fact that there are no Real Life examples shows that the pic is a controversy magnet, especially when combined with the description (i.e. inviting the reader to apply it to President Obama). So one could argue that the pic is Not An Example (unless you want to argue for adding Obama as an example, which I would disagree with).

I have no issue with the current, but a caption might help it. What that could be, I got nuthin' right now.

^^ It's not on the No Real Life Examples list, it just happens to not have any RL examples. The image has not caused controversy.

I agree that something fictional would be better. (But probably not a parody of the current; other suggestions?)

I agree that the Obama pic could potentially be controversial and replacing it would be a good idea, but not strongly enough to actually look for one myself.

I'll vote Keep here, as like with the previous IP topics.

The only controversy I've seen about the image is that people bring it up in IP threads that it might be controversal. So far, it's an invented problem to have a reason to pick another image.

[up]Yeah. Previous: [1] [2] If there is no image change in this thread, Hope Bringer will go on the "multiple threads" list which can only have new threads started with a concrete suggestion.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

When you see:

Image restored per Image Pickin' thread: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1371827130076708000@@
Please do not change or remove it without starting a new thread.

Then you better read the previous thread before starting a new one.

When the majority of posts in a thread are saying a thread's a bad idea, it's not worth having around. Locking up.
