Honestly, the picture doesn't seem to have anything in common with the trope except maybe sharing a name... it's completely misleading and worst than nothing.

Yeah, that's illustrating the trope name but not the trope. +1 to pull.

I'd suggest this one just for a visual pun, but it doesn't much demonstrate it either - it has the elements but doesn't fit.

Pull the present.

Let's not go literal. Pull.

Current isn't... THAT bad. While it is literal, it also still indicates the trope. It has the dad, wife, 2.5 children, and dog. The trope is straightforward enough that I don't think the pun detracts from its clarity any.

That said... good lord, I hate what that page has done with its "Variations." It's hideous.

I think it does illustrate the trope. Going to go Keep Until Better Image Suggested on it.

I agree with everything Larkmarn says. It's silly to make it "literal," but it does show a nuclear family and the "variations" are awful.

If we do want a new one, here are some options:

1950s family Minimalist Stick figures

They're clearer but they're... boring. I'd rather go with the current. Of these, first is my favorite, though.

The last has a watermark-thingy.

So it does. I missed it. Just throwing out the style since those stick figure families are all the rage.

If there's a better version of 8.1, that one, otherwise Keep Until Better Image Suggested.

I don't like the current, though I don't think it's bad enough to pull. It's got three kids two parents and a dog, but it's not the typical mundane family of a Dom Com. (The image isn't actually sourced; anyone know where it's from?)

3 I think does show that. Gas masks as a pun, yes, but they're a much more normal family in terms of everything else; they aren't out kicking ass or whatever.

The stick figures work, and the idea could be redone sans watermark.

The 50s family is very good and is my preference, because it shows the trope and is from when the term originated.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

I like the simplicity of the minimalist, but we should get some fiction suggestions out there like The Matthews.

[up] That is fine. We can keep this simple and go with that, or we can keep suggesting alternatives and make this discussion go over a hundred posts long. I'd rather not do the latter.

This is a simple concept so it shouldn't take too long to come up with something good. We need to capture, "Mom, Dad, 2-4 kids, dog, house in the suburbs. Cat optional." and "this is the minimal "core" family unit." I searched and found what I think might be just right.

I get a kick out of 3. 8.1 and 15 are also good.

@3 = WIN. Should be used for Image Links as Visual Pun.

@15 is probably my favourite.

Agreed with Larkmarn, the page is a sore sight. The variations are strange (I mean the way it's written) and there are mostly Zero Context Examples.

Considering that there's no pothole and (as far as I can tell) it's not even an example on the page, I'm not exactly sure how I was supposed to get that.

Let's compare them together. 8.1 15

I have image quality issues with 8.1, so I'd pick 15.
