Poor Image: No Yay

The current pic on No Yay works really well, but it has an obvious watermark, so it's pulled.

Found two images with watermarks in two different places and spliced them toghether. Too ginned to know if it worked or not.

Well, that certainly fixes that issue...the only issue I have is that it makes it look like we somehow stripped the watermark out of the pic. If everyone's good with it as is, I'll put it back in and we can call it good.

On one hand, I think that's a little shady. On the other, it's fanart, so the character designs are stolen anyway...

I think it's against our policy, but it would be a shame to lose this image. I'm not quite sure what we should do.

Alternately, we could try to get permission from the artist for that pic; he also has a couple of really good Harry X Snape pics but they're watermarked the same way.

I'd say 2 is the squickiest because of the tongue. I guess they all work.

Batman + Joker are Foe Yay first and foremost. I am good with @2.

True, but the previous image was Foe Yay in spades as well.

Why not? Pages with images look better than those without, at least for me.

Agreed. Unless Eddie puts his foot down on it, I think we should try to get something.

For what it's worth, I am willing to listen to arguments against having a pic here, but "We don't need X" is not an argument.

The only reason to not have an image is because is of the squick, but I admit that seeing Harry x Voldemort allowed me to understand the trope in under a second.

The Joker x Batman ones aren't as squicky as Voldemort x Harry because 1) Batman and The Joker are definitely both adults, and 2) Voldemort is mega fugly.

I wouldn't say fugly as much as... non-human. But the image is better on its own merits.

Sorry, but the relationships in Batman x Joker look a little too tame for No Yay to me.

6.2 shows the "no" aspect the best by Batmans expression.

I suppose we could ask the artist of the original for permission to use a crop of that image.

EDIT: Hmmmm...might not be terribly feasible, he lives overseas and only checks his e-mail once a month per his dA profile.

Let's ask the artist anyway, then wait for a reply. It can't really hurt anything.

Watermarks are an explicit anti-theft measure, and removing one (by any means) is not cool. Even just finding a different version that doesn't have the watermark isn't cool, if you know there is a version that has one. The About Images and Copyright rules have eased up a lot but that is still pretty strict: watermark = can't use. Only the copyright holder's (the artist's, probably) permission would trump that.

Depends on whose watermark it is. I wouldn't hesitate to use a copy of an image sans watermark if the watermark was from something like Memebase, and not the artist's original upload.

That said, this particular watermark does look like it's the artist's. Probably should just ask and hit the snooze.

The clock is up and we need to move on this. I've gone ahead and e-mailed the artist. If/when I hear from him, I'll re-open the thread long enough to let everyone know what the final result is, but for now I'm going to lock this one.

I heard from the artist today, and he not only gave us permission to use the pic, he gave me a non-watermarked version for the page (which I'm going to put up shortly) and gave us blanket permission to use any of his works as long as he's credited.
