http://thinkingmomsrevolution.com/how-i-gave-my-son-autism/ I was reading this and laughing. Its really easy to mistake for a paraody. especially when ou get to 'fluoridated water'. then I read the comments....
My mom is one of those kinds of moms who thinks a prescription I got at 7 gave me Aspergers. Now she blindly trusts any homeopathic product she finds. ive tried telling her that stuff like colloid silver doesnt work at all, and have linked her to a study by Harvard on how it can be harmful, but she just brushes it all off somehow. Freaking Harvard, man!
Homeopathy isn't complete crap. I've used some products for some things and noticed the difference between using it and not using it. But then again, some of these things have genuine studies behind them. Not all do, but I tend to trust health forums and people's experiences (both good and bad) far more than any advertising or "testimonials".
Flouridated water = autism? I'll have to read the article now.
Homeopathy is mostly the placebo effect - and it's been recorded so often and it's a known effect.
Fluoridated water though is something that gets bought up all the time, yet the amount in water is far too low for that to have any real effect.
"Did you expect somebody else?"There are supplements with real effects. Acetyl L-carnitine for example has been compared to a placebo and has been shown to genuinely have positive effects on the brain.
Is that not homeopathy though?
Nope - homeopathy is basically the diluting of a solution down into such a degree that there's often very little if any of the original chemical in it, and the supposed originator of the disease is what's used. Say for example a solution with lead in it, done homeopathically, will often have one tenth of a part per billion in it, which is less than a trace amount. It's based on an old idea that water has essence or memory where it can remember the chemical, and that memory heals people. This isn't the same as vaccines though, which are weakened but taken in accounts which are detectable, and enough to stimulate an immune response.
What you're talking about as a supplement has proven effect, but isn't diluted at all.

"Did you expect somebody else?"Oh crap. And all this time I was thinking "homeopathy's not bullshit - it's clearly worked for me, and there's studies on some of it proving it" when in fact what I'd been taking isn't homeopathy.
I happen to be writing an article on colloid silver for my school paper
This thread could be good for me...
ppppppppfeiufiofuiorjfadkfbnjkdflaosigjbkghuiafjkldjnbaghkdYou want armed against the flat-out lies of the homeopathic industry, (who by the way are EXACTLY the same scumbags as Big Pharma)? And the "vaccine theory for Autism/Asperger's" expounded upon by the former doctor Andrew Wakefield, that lots of American and other nationalities parents blame their kids getting Autism/Asperger's on? Read this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bad-Science-Ben-Goldacre/dp/000728487X - for the UK
http://www.amazon.com/Bad-Science-Ben-Goldacre-ebook/dp/B002RI9ORI - for elsewhere.
It pretty much demolishes both things referred to above. And others.
I have Aspergers Syndrome. Pretty much nothing my parents could have done to me could have given me it, except their genetics. Shit happens. Having an easy target to fire at is always a good thing, in theory, but in practice blaming anything but your genetics for having the condition is stupid.
Very interesting video that one. Would have been better if the presenter had stayed in the same place throughout. Him swapping seating positions from left to right of the screen and back again got on my proverbials.
It's the You Tube vlogger generation's way of getting across information.
That's a thing now.

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Having Aspergers isn't a bad thing, so in response to "shit happens"... this isn't really "shit". The bad thing is how society reacts to us simply for being different, and their lack of understanding. But for whatever reason, even though Aspies are currently sexually undesirable and thus are unlikely to pass on their genes, our numbers are still (gradually) growing anyway. So it looks as though genetics favors us.

'Shit' in this case literally just means 'stuff'. It's not another way of saying excrement. It's just saying 'Stuff happens, so what?'
"Did you expect somebody else?"I know. Just remarking though on how a lot of people think high-functioning autism is a disaster.

...it kind of is one though? i'm saying that as an aspie myself. it doesn't make you a worse person or decrease your value as a human being or anything, but it can do a lot to impair you socially depending on the specific case. it's not really something i celebrate as part of my identity.
It definitely impairs you socially, and in a socially-rigged world that expects people to act certain ways, Aspies tend to have little to no friends (especially close ones), low-paying jobs, get fired frequently, have more run-ins with the police due to their behavior/socialization being misunderstood, etc.
But if society comes to understand us better and accept us, then if anything, it could potentially be an asset. At least, it wouldn't be worse than what's currently considered normal.
Yooooooooooo! I have both Asperger's and ADHD. Fun.
I'm starting a job in less than a week, and I'm hoping my lack of a verbal filter doesn't get me fired.
I don’t even know anymore. My fiance has hfa, and is gay and he gets frustrated that people at work are the way they are (he just started working his first job 6 months ago) but the hfa hasn't been his biggest problem, he was recently involved in an incident where a district manager homophobe was actually fired for him running his mouth publicly in an anti gay tirade which fortunately was overheard by someone from HR.
But yeah it is tough. I know he is not going to make any friends there from how he describes their interactions with him and he only has 1 friend who recently moved away, but I do all I can to keep him happy :)
