My group and I are working on a Sword & Sorcery-type setting that's strongly influenced by the God Of War series, with a dash of Marvel's versions of Asgard and Olympus thrown in for good measure. The characters themselves are low-level Bricks (think Hercules or Thor toned down to about 1/3). Each of them carries a specific weapon of the player's choice (bow, spear, chainblade, whatever). The weapons are forged from different alloys (again, the player's choice), but the alloys give certain "bonuses" added to the weapons. The ones we've come up with:

  • Celestial Bronze/Imperial Gold: The weapons are only harmful to supernatural creatures
  • Cold-Iron: Demons and The Fair Folk
  • Infernal Steel: An alloy mined in the realms of the dead, forged in the flames of the underworld. It renders the user immune to demonic magic, and is harmful to all supernatural creatures. Unfortunately, it tends to make the wielder a bit Ax-Crazy in battle.
  • Orichalcum: A reddish-gold Atlantean metal, that's dangerous against Deep Ones (essentially the bastard children of giant ocean creatures and Lovecraftian monstrosities)
  • Starmetal: Useful against all forms of undead.
  • Silver: Useful against devils, lycanthropes, and certain kinds of vampires.

Of course, some of the weapons might have other powers as well, but that varies. My question: Are there any other types of substances/alloys you know of that are harmful to certain types of creatures?

Mistletoe isn't a metal, but it has mythological significance as a weapon. In Norse myths Baldr was killed with a dart made of mistletoe, because mistletoe was the only thing that didn't swear not to hurt him. In an alternate version of the myth he's killed with a sword named "Mistletoe" (or Mistleteinn).

There's always mithril*

, which IIRC was elven in make, so perhaps weapons made of mithril grant one protection from animals or natural phenomenon?

Two other substances I thought up (feel free to suggest changes/better names/whatever):

  • Dracojade steel: Basically, stainless steel exposed to dragon blood (any type), mixed with jade crystal. As the name suggests, it's capable of slicing through dragonskin. (BTW, if anybody knows what sort of creatures are vulnerable to jade, it'd be appreciated).
  • Elemental [Aquan/Auran/Ignan/Terran] crystal: A crystalline substance that can generate element-based effects. Useful against creatures of its opposing element, or other beings.
