Yes, I know the point is that the designs don't look alike, but there's nothing connecting the two. Maybe we could get a shot with the Captain N version with a whip, at least?

We could also include Simon◊ from Castlevania Judgement, too. Hell, we could skip the Captain N version altogether and do a comparison between him and the Conan-looking classic Simon.

I think the fanart one is the easiest to see.

I got robotnik and dante from the examples section

I don't think Dante works, since there's no indication he's the same character. Robotnik is too easily identifiable in all versions.

While the fanart works, I really don't like how it looks, especially if resized. The second kinda works, but the blurriness hurts.

I don't think fanart works for this trope. It's needs images from the 'real' works.

It works because it's fanart of official character designs... but I just don't like the way it looks.

A little bit off topic but you know who Robotic reminds me of? Jamie Hyneman.

Eh. they still look like the same guy, just in different art styles. The fact he keeps more or less the same outfit doesn't help things.

Kind of looks like a mechanised version of the same character. Don't think that's what we're looking for.

Edit: Overall I'm not sure it's a good idea to have an image split between a live-action version and a comic/animated version. There's an inherent difference there you need to take into account, and that's generally more accepted to be somewhat different, considering something that works in a comic doesn't always work in live-action films. See Spandex, Latex, or Leather, for instance.

That's an improvement over the current, for sure.

Yeah. There's the whip and the blond hair that ties them together, but otherwise they have completely different design.

What about Gundam Deathscythe Hell: TV◊ vs. OVA◊.

The thing with Humongous Mecha is that it's common with several versions or upgrades of the same robot in the same story, and people unfamiliar with the genre might just see a big robot and either not see any difference, or not see any connection between them.

I think Simon is the best so far, cause he's blond, has a whip, and fights monsters, but otherwise looks totally different. That's not getting into some of the weirder Simon Belmont designs, like Light Yagami's head surgically attached to a 35 year old bodybuilder◊. (Apologies to MGDMT)

And only partly because I love Captain N so much

13 is good, as long as the original Simon is on top instead of the Captain N surfer dude looking one.
