Yang's Volume 5 Promo Art

Notably, it's basically a frontal view of her Volume 4 Promo Art.

Lookin' slick there, Yang.

It definitely feels more relaxed compared to Vol. 4's art. Yang is not out for blood, she's out to be a cool elder sister (and bust some skulls while at it).

I think that's the best piece of promo art Yang's ever had. I much prefer this current look to her original appearance, and I really like the fact they've retained the asymmetry in her style. It makes her cyberarm a part of the style, which is really good.

I'm a big fan of the show's anti-upskirt technology. I'd rather we never saw Yang's pants to know if she's wearing a proper pair or not. tongue

Okay, Four-Temperament Ensemble:

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

There's an absolute mess with this trope for the RWBY show. The trope has been constantly added to Team RWBY for years (four girls with the same four colours as the four humours equals a fandom determined to make this trope apply).

There has been constant disagreement in the fandom over how to apply the four humours — some just match the girl's signature colour to the relevant humour colour. Others try and make the personalities fit the relevant humour, but there's no agreement on whose personalities fit what humour. It gets so bad that, sometimes, the girls will be under one pattern on the trope page and under a completely different pattern on the character page at the same time.

At one point years ago, it was agreed that it was shoehorning, but there's no clear audit trail (I've just been digging). I'm therefore bringing this here. Most of the time it's ever been added, it's been as ZCEs, but here's all the different iterations of how the trope has been applied and therefore the scale of the problem. I've placed this request on the team's character discussion page and the Is This An Example? forum thread to try and get a consensus that, hopefully, will stick this time.

So, in short:

  1. Does Team RWBY fit this trope?
    1. If Yes, which humour applies to which girl?
    2. If No, what is the best way to stop to stop this trope from being constantly readded to the page?

The girls have been shifted through the different humours, as follows:

Summary:

  • Sanguine
    • Ruby: 9
    • Yang: 5
  • Phlegmatic
    • Ruby: 5
    • Weiss: 3
    • Blake: 5 (Eclectic 1)
  • Melancholic
    • Weiss: 6
    • Blake: 8
  • Choleric
    • Weiss: 5
    • Yang: 9

  1. Aug 2017:
    • Ruby (Phlegmatic), Weiss (Choleric), Blake (Melancholic), Yang (Sanguine)
    • Ruby (Sanguine), Weiss (Phlegmatic), Blake (Melancholic), Yang (Choleric)
  2. May 2017: Ruby (Examples Are Not Arguable Sanguine), Weiss (Melancholic), Blake (Phlegmatic), Yang (Examples Are Not Arguable Choleric).
  3. Dec 2016: Ruby (Sanguine), Weiss (Melancholic), Blake (Phlegmatic), Yang (Choleric).
  4. Oct 2016: Ruby (Sanguine), Weiss (Melancholic), Blake (Phlegmatic), Yang (Choleric).
  5. Feb 2016: Ruby (Phlegmatic), Weiss (Choleric), Blake (Melancholic), Yang (Sanguine).
  6. Dec 2015:
    • Ruby (Sanguine), Weiss (Melancholic), Blake (Eclectic), Yang (Choleric)
    • Ruby (Sanguine), Weiss (Melancholic), Blake (Phlegmatic), Yang (Choleric)
    • Ruby (Sanguine), Weiss (Phlegmatic), Blake (Melancholic), Yang (Choleric)
  7. Nov 2014: Ruby (Phlegmatic), Weiss (Choleric), Blake (Melancholic), Yang (Sanguine)
  8. Sep 2014: (Debated between, shoehorn concluded but poorly documented:)
    • Ruby (Sanguine), Weiss (Melancholic), Blake (Phlegmatic), Yang (Choleric).
    • Ruby (Phlegmatic), Weiss (Choleric or Melancholic), Blake (Melancholic, defaulting Weiss to Choleric), Yang (Sanguine).
  9. Aug 2014: Ruby (Sanguine), Weiss (Phlegmatic), Blake (Melancholic), Yang (Choleric)
  10. Jul 2014: Ruby (Phlegmatic), Weiss (Choleric), Blake (Melancholic), Yang (Sanguine)

I feel like you could make some good arguments for Ruby being Sanguine and Weiss being Choleric (especially pre-character development) but that's about it. Unless a consensus can be reached, I'd recommend just cutting it.

Holy hell, the Four-Temperament Ensemble page is a mess too. Someone needs to take a chainsaw to that and move like 90% of it to Analysis.

Anyway, super-tldr, I'd say Ruby is sanguine (cheerful), Yang is choleric (angry), you can make a solid argument for Blake as either melancholic (depressed) or phlegmatic (stoic), and Weiss doesn't really fit any particularly well. The closest fit would be Weiss as melancholic and Blake as phlegmatic, but that's a bit of Square Peg Round Trope

[up]Given the way the trope is written (yes, I agree it's an appalling mess), just choosing one trait is also cherry-picking the trope to find the bits that suit the characters (for example, Yang may fit some of the 'Key Weakness' list for Choleric, but she doesn't fit that humour at all well otherwise; meanwhile, she does fit some of the 'Key Strengths' for Sanguine as well, but doesn't entirely suit that humour either).

The way the trope is currently written, cherry-picking has to happen or it would be completely unusable. As a result, you get consequences like the one we have for Team RWBY: by cherry-picking both the trope description and the girls' roles and personalities, you can slot the four girls into almost any of the humours and then argue about it until kingdom come.

But that's shoehorning, which is a good sign the trope doesn't apply.

It's also a good sign that there might be a need for Trope Repair.

Could say the same thing about Five-Man Band. Pretty sure I can count the number of times I've seen it used correctly on one hand. Although I think that did have a trope repair, so maybe it's improved since then.

Though it helps that that one is more general in its scope- I've seen it misused before but the four temperaments I've basically never seen used well.

It's almost like shoving every personality trait into one of four corners doesn't work that well.

but also, I feel they will make him a butt monkey in order to balance taking Yang arm

I feel like we're gonna have to wait on the rest of the chibi antagonists- CRMNE has been around and on-screen for quite a while but Adam and Salem and the rest of WTCH still haven't popped in much. Heck, we still haven't had much from the more-secondary cast like CVFY.

Since there is a long-term clean-up project in the forums for Five-Man Band, that supports the suggestion that Four-Temperament Ensemble needs some help. tongue

All right. If it's okay with you all, judging by the responses here and on the Is This An Example thread, I'll give it a couple more days so that it's had a week, but unless something unexpected crops up, I'll scrub the trope for the girls as a shoehorn, put a commented out tag on the character page telling people to stop adding the trope (worded more politely, obviously), and then ask on the Trope Repair forum whether or not this trope needs some TLC.

Do you think the girls fit the Four-Philosophy Ensemble trope? I ask as there's been the same trouble with that one in the past, although not nearly on the same scale or frequency as the Four-Temperament Ensemble trope.

Thinking about a team where the members have a mixed inspiration of fairy tale and video game. I have Doom Slayer / Green Knight, Chun Li / Cinderella, Princess Peach / Rapunzel and I've got nothin' for #4.

"Forrest" wears armors that let him go fast and doesn't name the individual pieces of his armory since he just has so many weapons. They're collectively referred to as "Oak/Olive Branches", I haven't decided. It'd be appropriate for him to have some kind of shotgun/chainsaw weapon that actually get a name, "Nature Fury"?, but it doesn't work out in my head.

"Crystal" has power boots that she kicks the shit out of stuff with. I could see her being the leader. Loses a boot at some point and has to kick some ass to get it back.

"Passion/Pitaya/Can't-Call-Her-Peach" has a weaponized umbrella, ala Neo, but mainly utilizes a density semblance to float around like a fairy or goomba stomp any unfortunate fool to get under her.

[up][up]I wouldn't say so, no- Ruby and Yang are both on the Optimist side, Blake has bits of both the Cynic and the Apathetic, and Weiss falls into any and all of them depending on the point in her arc you're looking at and what subject is being discussed.

[up][up][up] Same thing. None of them fit any given philosophy completely enough to count. Ruby might qualify for The Optimist but that's it.
