The ABC's election analyst predicts that the LNP will end up with more seats, but probably won't win outright (source). I'm not sure what the basis for the prediction is though. Turnbull has declared victory for the LNP already because reasons.
In related news, this election had the highest vote for minor parties and independents the country has seen. Almost one quarter of Australians favoured minor parties at the ballot box (first preference when they voted). I doubt the major parties will learn anything from this, though.
Also historic, the first indigenous member of the House of Representatives was voted in.

I must have missed that. No need for an inquiry, Islam is a religion twisted around by people like ISIS to justify going to war with the entire world. Even I who wants to avoid stressing over politics knows that. If Hanson believes one is needed then perhaps it is not Islam and the many different facets and beliefs of it that need looking at, it's the idea that, "my way is the only way, anyone who is not with me is the enemy" that needs a Royal Commission. Such a tool would be much better served used to investigate the parties we have had this election that, seemingly, believe that are in a war against race or religion.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursYou have just suggested that the whole of Cristianity should be looked at... because Westbro nutjobs and the increasing extremism of many Churches in Africa and Eastern Europe.
Same deal. It's extremism in total which needs looking at; not a particular religion. Because it doesn't matter the belief system, but extremism is a human problem across the board. Which also includes extremism against Muslims.
That's what I was trying to say, we have ISIS using the belief of Islam as a sword, Christians who believe all homosexuals are to be put to death, atheists who think murder would be ethical for those who hold religious beliefs. Some say religion is the problem. I say fanaticism and being The Fundamentalist is the issue, not what that particular belief is.
To put it another way, chocolate, vanilla. Which is really the better flavor? If you have preference then does that mean others are not allowed to think different? There you go then. Sadly some do believe this.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursI've been watching the latest series of Outback Truckers, and I'm wondering if is there still a drought in outback Queensland?
Keep Rolling OnPretty much yeah. But there are certain parts of outback Queensland that pretty much oscillate between drought and flood with very little in between.
Support for Australian PM hits all-time low
The poll of 1,696 Australian voters found satisfaction with Turnbull has fallen to 34 percent, the lowest level since he ousted former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in September 2014.
Turnbull enjoyed record-high approval ratings after securing the leadership but his numbers have waned significantly as the government failed to chalk up legislative victories.
The make-up of Australia's new Parliament threatens to continue Turnbull's struggles.
Turnbull called early elections in July to break a deadlock in the Senate, the upper house, where a handful of independents has blocked the government's agenda of corporate tax cuts and workplace reforms for more than two years.
But the election backfired, leaving the ruling Liberal-National coalition with a one-vote majority in the lower house and dependant on either the opposition Labor Party or eight to 10 independents or minor party senators to pass legislation.
Australia's opposition moves motion for Royal Commission into banks
Bill Shorten told the parliament which returned on Tuesday a Royal Commission was the only avenue that had the necessary coercive powers and jurisdiction to deal with bank misconduct. The government has opposed such an inquiry.
A Royal Commission is the most powerful investigative body in Australia, convened in recent years to address institutional child sexual abuse and corruption in the building trades, with the power to recommend prosecutions and new legislation.
Australia's Turnbull hit over same-sex marriage as parliament opens
Keep Rolling OnFamily First senator Bob Day may have been invalidly elected.
Depending on how the High Court decides, this could cause a recount that could cause the election of any non-Family First senator, including the possible election of another Labor senator, which would be the government's worst nightmare. Incredible.
Wikipedia article believed to be the centre of breakdown between Australia and Indonesia. Is that true? It sounds rather odd to me. And considering that I write Wikipedia articles on a slightly volatile geopolitical region - the Chile-Argentina border - a bit creepy.

Seems to be about an 'offensive' Australian military base display this time, not Wikipedia.
Should work now.

Australian politics just got royally screwed up, really quickly. The short version is that people who hold dual citizenship aren't allowed to run for parliament in Australia without fulling renouncing their other citizenship. A few months ago several members of parliament were referred to the High Court for failing to declare potential conflicts. It started with a couple of Greens senators but quickly spiralled out from there.
The court rulings have just come in and five of the seven members referred have had their elections invalidated. Including National Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce. This is going to get real ugly, real fast. While the invalidated Senate results essentially mean that while the individual senators lose their seats, their parties get to nominate their replacements, Joyce sits in the Lower House and is part of the Turnbull government's razor thin majority and his removal triggers a by-election. If he clears up his citizenship issue he's free to run in the by-election (and is fully expected to do so) but until he does that seat is vacant and chaos is the order of the day in the lower house.
And just to be clear, apologies for the minor-necroing but this topic has been somewhat neglected (and a lot of Australian issues have worked well enough in other threads), but I felt this was sufficiently relevant that this thread deserved a revival.
Back on topic, anyone else fearing the looming spectre of an early election? (And I live in Queensland, so I've got a state election coming up anyway).

Because of course. Why take responsibility for your own mistake when you can blame the court instead?
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe moment I found out that Barnaby Joyce lost the High Court ruling my first thought was "This is gonna get really ugly". It was kinda amusing though that Matt Canavan, the guy who's dual citizenship reveal set off this whole fiasco, managed to end with the High Court ruling in his favour.

I do lots of stuff. The real question is am I any good at that stuff.Sir Ninian Stephen is dead.
Prominent Australian academic says he has been silenced by Chinese Government
"Allen & Unwin said that they were worried about retaliation from Beijing through a number of possible avenues including legal threats, orchestrated by Beijing, and they decided it was too big a risk and so therefore pulled the plug and returned the rights to me," Professor Hamilton said.
Silent Invasion closely examines the Chinese Communist Party's activities in Australia, and Professor Hamilton said it had already been significantly edited by lawyers.
"We have no doubt that Silent Invasion is an extremely significant book," the company wrote to the author in a confidential email to the author on November 8, which has been seen by the ABC.
The publisher said it was concerned about "potential threats to the book and the company from possible action by Beijing".
In the email the company explained: "The most serious of these threats was the very high chance of a vexatious defamation action against Allen & Unwin, and possibly against you personally as well."
Allen & Unwin was "an obvious target" for "Beijing's agents of influence", the publisher added.
The Same Sex Marriage Bill has passed successfully through the House of Representatives.
I do lots of stuff. The real question is am I any good at that stuff. In more sense than one - these files were locked up in two cabinets, forgotten about, and then the cabinets were put up for sale to members of the public with no attempts to find out what was inside and why.
Fortunately, the person that did force the cabinets open decided to hand over the cache of highly classified documents to the ABC, instead of, say, a foreign intelligence service.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotOops. <facepalm>
Hopefully this will rattle some cages. This leak is incredibly embarrassing, and the fact they they were sold cheaply for being heavy and for not having keys is stupid - as proven by the average citizen who broke through the lock with a drill and accessed all of these files. The people responsible for the sale should have broken the locks themselves and checked the documents, instead of letting them fall into public hands.
Reckon there'll be any governmental backlash against ABC for this?

It’ll be hard for backlash to stick, ABC did the responsible thing and reacted any personal information or anything connected to national security, so it’s purely boring shit or embarrassing shit.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWait...they sold off cabinets full of documents for cheap to the public without even bothering to see if there was anything that shouldn't be sold to the public...because they couldn't find the key?
Nope. I can't. This is too much stupid for me to handle. After Trump's SOTU speech, this has pretty much overloaded my "stupid bullshit" tolerance today.

Disgusted, but not surprised
The Wikipedia page for the whole election suggests that a change from Coalition to Labor seems to have happened. In seat numbers, if not in outright majority.
