I mean, everyone seems to be giving "Purple Rain" specifically all the love (seriously, all the Prince covers I've seen and heard about in the past week or so have literally just been "Purple Rain", which I don't get—it's a good song, but I wouldn't even call it the best song on the album, plus there are tons of others, even tons of other hits of his, people could be giving attention to), so my money's on that one.

Ohhhhh the "took a tiger to the vet" guy. I remember when Todd in the Shadows talked about him.

He's such a forgettable rapper.

Don't remember Todd discussing him, though I remember the Rap Critic discussing him and the song.

I'm not expecting a nine minute long ballad to continue to do well in the charts tbh.

"Purple Rain" should be in the top ten next week, especially after the monstrous sales boost it received following Prince's death. Some are even speculating that it might go to #1, which would be an interesting thing to see, especially when it never reached the top during its original run in '84. It peaked at #2 behind Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go."

And hey, "Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake was a mid-tempo song that was eight minutes long, and that was one of the biggest hits of 2013.

Except that the version of Mirrors that was played on radio stations and was bought by many was only four and a half minutes long. It's guaranteed that anyone who plays Purple Rain on radio would play the long version.

Really? I mean, I haven't listened to that much radio since Prince's death, so I don't know if programmers prefer the long version or not. Most of "Purple Rain"'s resurgence in popularity appears to be sales-based.

Nah, I'm confident that radio stations prefer to use cut versions whenever they can (unless it's a Classic Rock Radio Station, in which case they play stuff like Free Bird or 2112 in full length).

Yeah. I heard Station to Station played on a classic rock station (what a strange and rare choice) and they used the French 3:40 single.

I have no doubt that they'd play the shortened version. After all... (2:33-2:50 if the timecode doesn't work right)

Wouldn't have expected Jack White on a Beyonce song. That sounds like an interesting combination EDIT: but apparently I'll never find out if it is, since everywhere I can find to stream it is either a muted video or just nothing. Y'know, maybe if I'd heard the song and liked it, I'd have actually bought it, Beyonce's record company. EDITx2: And apparently the only way to stream it is Tidal. Fuck that.

EDIT: So after some more digging around, I found it through alternative meansnote , and it's actually pretty good. I might listen to the rest of the album, against my better judgement.

[up] "Lemonade" is not a Tidal exclusive. It's actually available on iTunes. If it had been a Tidal exclusive, I don't think it would have gotten to #1 on the Billboard 200.

EDIT: Oh, wait. You're talking about streaming, not buying. Never mind.

My work has mandated that we keep the local top 40 station on all day, but I guess the upside is that now I know most of these songs being discussed again.

Funny thing about "Seven Years": I dislike the song, but went and looked it up just now because there's one line that the radio edit leaves almost completely unintelligible and I was wondering what the missing words were - "By eleven smoking herb and drinking burning liquor".

"NO" is pretty irritating - Granted, I felt the same way about "All About That Bass" before it grew on me note , but I don't see that happening here ever. I want someone to do a "supercut" type edit just to find out what percentage of the song consists of the title drop. I don't see it is a "boy band type" song though - there's definitely something late-90's-through-early-2000's about it, but I think it's a failed attempt to sound like a Destiny's Child song of that period.

Ariana Grande's "Dangerous Woman" is probably a distant second in the category of songs in the top 40 that irritate me - it's just really plodding and non-melodic.

It's apparently just outside of the top 40 (Wikipedia says it's gotten as high as #41 on Billboard) but the song I'm minding the least right now is "Lost Boy" by Ruth B. Somehow it helps that I was trying to figure out if the Peter Pan motif was supposed to be a metaphor for something, but apparently she just was watching Once Upon a Time and decided to write a song from the point of view of one of the Lost Boys.

I want someone to do a "supercut" type edit just to find out what percentage of the song consists of the title drop.

That's my biggest gripe with "NO"...could've been a lot better if it hadn't run those particular lines into the ground with repetition.

It couldn't have been much better, seeing as a) Meghan Trainor is rapping, b) it tries to be a boy band-like song, and c) the production is absolute shit.

I mean, point B there doesn't necessarily have much to do with it—that's just the style it's going for, and no style is inherently bad unless the style is Nightcore.

@NO: I actually kinda like that song (a first Meghan Trainor-wise; I can't stand All About That Bass). It's catchy as hell, actually sounds very much like Single Ladies by Beyonce in both sound and lyrics.
