"Look at Mark Zuckerberg. I was sitting next to him at dinner a couple of years ago, and he said he taught himself programming primarily because he was interested in games. If we set programs in high schools that engage kids because they get it, they won’t be just sitting there slouching in back of rooms while someone is lecturing.

"Given how pervasive computers and the internet is now, how integral it is in our economy, and how fascinated kids are with it, I want to make sure they actually know how to produce stuff and not simply consume stuff."

Obama gets a [tup] for this one.

Also, I recommend modifying the Aurora Toolset from NWN1, if you want software for kids to play around with.

Finally, an authority figure that doesn't think that video games turn everyone into psychopathic murderers.

If I were an American citizen, Obama would have earned all of my votes forever with this.

The fact that he can't run for re-election says a lot here.

He can still run for election to other positions though.

Meh. It's a fairly safe thing to say, all things considered. Call me paranoid, but I don't put much stock in anything politicians say.

[up][up]...I'm not sure how that's applicable to what I said. I didn't say I don't believe him, just that I don't place much value on the fact that he said it.

For once I actually agree with something the President says. I guess even a broken clock can be right twice a day.

The notion that the federal government should be involved in any of that in general, but that's a discussion for another thread.

[up][up]An increased confluence of computers within the classroom is something that needs to happen all across the country, especially in rural states where hardly any computers seem to be used, much less utilized as a baseboard for future innovators in the field. Nationwide reform is something that most certainly would be good for the federal government to do, since right now it seems almost like the states are at a cultural war with each other. We can't exactly be a strong nation when we have the population socially divided in half.

When the president, chief executive of the federal government, is acknowledging the deep scientific merits behind studying video games as a medium and as a technology, I'm mostly thinking "fuck yes" at the federal government actually taking definitive action on that.

It matters at least a little bit that such things are being said now in the aftermath of Sandy Hook, and the resulting knee-jerk reactions that put video games and other media under scrutiny.

I'm more in the "even a broken clock" camp than not (not that that would change if someone from the other party was in the Oval Office). But Obama is also a parent...and I'll give him that in things related to that, he's more sane than not.

Its Federal government, despite only being the third most populated nation on Earth and in something of an economic downswing insists on putting more GDP into the military than any other nation today, even from a pure percentile standard.

Who does this military fight? When non government organizations attack it calls for criminal investigation, not war. Second amend is to fight government should one feel to need to? History says the reason USA government is militarized right now because someone fought it and won so by popular vote it was strengthened to stop such a rebellion from occurring again. To an outsider the gun loving military worshiping USA culture is the reason for all of its violence. Media could not be more than a side affect of such a crazed environment.
