It's actually rather appropriate — this year marks Stand-Alone Complex's 10th anniversary.

So an origin story, backstory of some kind? The Major's life as a young woman, possibly World War IV?

[up] The character design confirms this is another continuity separate from Stand Alone Complex.... Besides, 2nd Gig revealed Motoko's background story, which was far more than the original manga ever intended on giving.

World War IV is actually covered in an Apple Seed illustration and data book. Stand Alone Complex didn't go into it very much mostly just to keep with the times- it was written back when the Soviet Union still existed, so revealing every little detail about it in an anime that would come nearly 20 years later wouldn't work very well...

Besides... Jesus was leading China's army in that war... I could not have made up that last sentence even if I tried.

Not much of her background, just some snippets of her time with the military (and that through Saito's unreliable narration), and her very beginning along with Kuze. Not the rise to prominence, implied multiple identities, etc.

Jesus, seriously? I'll have to take a look at that art book...

But this is good too. I just wonder how they'll characterize her this time (the cheeky Major of the manga, mysterious implacable woman of Standalone, or somewhere in between...)

[up]Whatever the case, it does seem like this timeline deals with a younger Major (she looks to be in her mid to late 20s) than the one from SAC. Yes, I know it's a cyborg body, but she seemed to go through them until she reached her 30s.

Really, this discussion reminds me that i never watched the movies. Are they any good? I've heard different things...

Me, upon hearing the news about a new Ghost In The Shell series: smile

Me, upon hearing of Production IG's involvement: sad

Who knows, maybe they'll redeem themselves?

The movies are... a mess. You'd be better off reading the manga. You certainly aren't missing much.

Not sure if I'm digging that artstyle, but considering Stand Alone Complex is one of my favorite anime of all time, I'm all in. cool

I always wondered if Ghost In The Shell and Metal Gear would go well together.

That one PS 2 game by Namco Bandai was very Metal Gear-ish in how it did the gang communicating each other with radio in a very Codec esque fashion, so, eh.

BTW, Motoko really doesn't need to have her childhood fleshed out. We know just enough about her background, that seeing her as a rookie in the military would actually detract from her bad-assery.

Besides, this Motoko has blue eyes. SAC Motoko always had red eyes through her life, so it doesn't make sense for it to be part of SAC. If it was, it'd probably be called 3rd Gig.

You, uhh... You do know that Production IG OWNS Ghost in the Shell, right? (Well, also Kodansha, but that's besides the point.) They've produced every installment of the franchise right from the very start with the first movie.

The GITS SAC movie was okay, it was definitely a The Movie style where it was just an extended episode. I think it was Solid State Society?

SAC Motoko could have just decided to switch eye colors I guess.

Except that she's had those red eyes since she first became a cyborg at the age of six, and has them present for all her other bodies. Besides, the new character design doesn't match up with SAC's.

[up]Yeah, I think it's obvious that it's a new canon. I still think it's a younger Motoko though.

Yes, but I can dream. My first hope was that they had sold the rights to another studio/producer. I also know that I'm not being fair at all to Production IG, but Guilty Crown is a stain that runs deep. It will take more than the not-quite-up-to-potential Eden Of The East, the never-quite-solid Rinne No Lagrange, and the admittedly-competent-but-not-stellar Robotics;Notes for me to truly forgive them.

...Over-dramatic and over-reactive to a bunch of fictional series from a studio, much?

[up][up] Guess you haven't gotten around to watching Psycho-Pass yet.

Back to the topic, more Ghost In The Shell. HELL YES. I for one hope Arise is a series, but in any case it's easily my most anticipated anime of this year. Hopefully this, Psycho-Pass, and Gen Urobutchi's Spring 2013 offering will help Production IG return to form.

Why are so sure that this is an alternate continuity?

Because the Major has had a character re-design?

And I thought that Production IG were the people involved in the first two. Am I missing something there?
