Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

I found this on Trivia.Wednesday:

  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: After Percy Hynes White (Xavier Thorpe) was accused of sexual misconduct, rumors began spreading that he had been written out of the series. These rumors were seemingly confirmed when Season 2 began filming and he was not included in the cast. It remains to be seen whether his character has been recast or dropped entirely.

While that is possibly the reason, we don't know for sure why he left and we don't trope rumors. Should this be kept or removed just for rumors?

Remove.

Also, I call foul on this one from Pokémon: The Series for Broken Aesop: Broken Aesop: "Viva Las Lapras." There's a group of people who chase after a herd of Lapras, send out their Pokémon to weaken them, throw their poke balls and... wait a minute.

Mostly because the punks were outright abusing the Transport Pokémon, so it's not an example of "Broken Aesop".

It lacks context to explain the aesop that was broken, so it should be at least commented out.

The following example is listed for Tangerine (1997) as Heroic Sacrifice, although it's in no way in any risk of being fatal:

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Antoine Thomas confessing that he actually lives in Tangerine, and that he's thus not qualified to play for the Lake Windsor Downs team, nor has he ever been. This wipes out the last four years of Lake Windsor's football victories, and thus destroys Antoine's possible future as a football star and a college student. Why'd he do it? Because it also wiped out the football careers of Erik and Arthur, meaning that they won't get their coveted scholarships. Antoine saw them injure Luis Cruz, and knows that the two of them are nothing but bullies who put on masks when around adults.

It should be noted that Luis was dead, as a result of stated injury, at the time Antoine made this confession.

[up] This is misuse already, but its even worse in context. NO ONE gets angry at anyone for not obeying the Magic Conch Shell, Spongebob and Patrick get scared and say Squidward shouldnt disobey it, no angry reactions at all.

[up][up][up]I don't think so. Though Spongebob and Patrick were shocked at Squidward for his snarky "consult the magic toenail" comment, they were not outright mad at him, and I feel like for it to count as an example of Berserk Button, Spongebob and Patrick's response to Squidward's comment would need to be a lot harsher.

Regardless, I figure since I am making this post, I might as well restate one of my previous questions that didn't get answered before:

Bumping two previous questions:

Can you still use Slipping a Mickey for when someone offers another character a pill lying about the effects when they are actually sedative/willpower-cancelling drugs?

About this example in Characters.Sabbat Of The Witch:

  • Deus Sex Machina: An unfortunate side-effect of her witch contract is that she has to masturbate. and she has no choice in the matter because she gets aroused at the inconvenient time. Once she is in a relationship with Shuuji, she substitutes masturbation with sex to subside her sexual urges. In her Restart route, this goes away so she doesn't have to worry about it.

Initially it was under A Date With Rosie Palms and it got removed when the trope turned into an index, but it was added again under Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration. I thought that the example wasn't about frustration but about a (supernatural) plot element forcing her to masturbate with no other way around it, so I moved it to Deus Sex Machina. Is that correct?

And asking about magical mirror vans which appear in Nukitashi. They are vans with special mirrors in the back that allow people inside to look at the outside but not the other way around. And naturally they are designed to have sex. Can they be considered Shag Wagon despite not being used for drugs?

[up][up]Being illogical aside, yeah I think the entry counts for Somebody Set Us Up The Bomb, but it could also be an instance of Grenade Hot Potato given how it’s a tug-of-war between an explosive.

[up]Yeah, I think Slipping a Mickey could fit the description even if it’s a sedative. Either that or simply Tampering with Food and Drink.

The Sabbat example could also be a magical version of Extreme Libido. But looking at it, I think it works for Deus Sex.

Yeah, it may not be a traditional Shag Wagon, but it does fit the ‘sex’ part of the trope. If you don’t think it fits, it could also just be a regular Auto Erotica example.

Someone1981: It isn’t needed (it could just be a near-fatal injury), but yeah most Heroic Sacrifices involve death. Antoine’s actions could also be a Zero-Approval Gambit.

Mattman_the_Storyteller: Agreed. Death has more of a personal vendetta against Puss that’s part of his story arc and The Last Wish itself feels separate from the rest of the Shrek franchise in both tone and characters.

Would this be an example of Does This Remind You of Anything?

In RWBY episodes "A Tale Involving a Tree" and "Of Solitude and Self" the Blacksmith gently guides Ruby into excepting, on her own accord, that there is no perfect huntsman, and she is enough as herself, bears similarities to how a therapist would help a patient out of negativity about themselves.

[up][up] Thanks, Canuck. The concrete case where I wanted to use Slipping a Mickey was this spoilery example from Wonderful Everyday, and with what you said it's alright:

  • Slipping a Mickey: Megu and Satoko offer Zakuro some pills to make her face prettier, but they are drugs that completely cancel her willpower and she gets forced to masturbate in public. The next day, the two bullies attempt this again, but Zakuro sees through the trick. Shiroyama and his gang come to forcefully drug and kidnap her anyway in order to rape her.

[up] Maybe it would be better as Be Yourself or Just the Way You Are. The psychologist analogy is a bit far-fetched.

Bumping two previous queries.

Firstly, is this prospective No Sympathy example for VideoGame.Clangen valid?

  • No Sympathy: If a cat dies, and a Clanmate has a high enough feeling of "dislike" towards them, the game may describe them as showing a pointed lack of sympathy. Furthermore, the Clanmate will not become afflicted with the "grieving" status, as would be the case if the Clanmate had a good relationship with the deceased. Clanmates with high enough feelings of "jealousy" towards the deceased may exhibit similar behaviour. These scenarios can happen even if the Clanmate in question has a generally benevolent nature. If the deceased was murdered, a Clanmate's apathetic reaction can serve as a clue to the killer's identity if it hasn't been revealed yet, as murder is dependent on the "dislike" stat.
(Cat 1) approaches the clearing where (Cat 2)'s body lies, cold and lifeless. Defying expectations of sympathy and grief, (Cat 1) instead curses their fallen Clanmate to the Dark Forest where they belong.

Secondly, does a ship qualify as Foe Yay Shipping even if the characters involved aren't mortal enemies per se, but more along the lines of bitter rivals?

I'm not sure about this because Wutai-esque worlds a quite in Japanese media so it feels unnecessary to me. Would like more opinions before I do anything though.

Is this Achievements in Ignorance or Right for the Wrong Reasons?

  • For The Greater Goof: After noticing a name on the Marauders' Map that the artifact struggles to display, Fred and George Weasley do some investigative research into who Tom Riddle is. All they learn for certain is that Riddle went Dark and vanished in eastern Europe a few decades back, but they conclude that he's somehow hidden underneath Professor Quirrell's turban and decide to expose this fact to the Hogwarts staff. It isn't until after Quirrell and his hitchhiker are apprehended that Fred and George learn they unwittingly exposed Voldemort, as his true name isn't public knowledge and the Marauders' Map doesn't display aliases.

Regarding this, which I came across on The Nice Guys page;

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Possibly intentional. Amelia's really not that sympathetic or likeable once the main characters get to know her a little better, but her murder is so brutal and perfunctory you almost can't help but join in Healy's and March's dejection when they find out.

For additional info, the character mentioned here, Amelia, is also listed as an Ensemble Dark Horse on the same page (it's the most recent edit on the page, whereas the one listed above appears to be an earlier one).

[up][up][up][up]It’s more Achievements in Ignorance, since while Fred and George were right about Tom Riddle, the emphasis is on how they exposed the return of evil incarnate through happenstance.

[up][up][up]I haven’t watched The Nice Guys in a long time, but from what I remember Amelia was more of a snappy airhead, but it could depend on the person. It might be worth listing her as a Base-Breaking Character given the two differing opinions.

  • "The Dying Night": Wendall Urth, Phone-In Detective, deduces the killer's identity through the now-incorrect evidence that Mercury is a Tidally Locked Planet. The killer had assumed they could safely store a light-sensitive recording in starlight and retrieve it days, or even years, later without the recording being exposed to sunlight. Current astronomical understanding is that Mercury has about three days for every two years it experiences. Asimov acknowledged this in afterwords of later printings, but said he couldn't figure out how to fix it without rewriting the entire story, so jokingly blamed it on the scientists for changing their minds.

Is this an example of Conviction by Counterfactual Clue, or does it skew too hard to Science Marches On?

  • Have a Gay Old Time: Thanks to...certain demographics, it's difficult to take the name "The Vor Game" seriously in the internet age.
