When a small town gets invaded by vampires, the only thing that can stop them...are Chinese vampires.

Vampire Wars, coming to theatre soon.

So if a Vampire doesn't have a weakness to sunlight, doesn't need to drink blood, and isn't dead, are they really a vampire at that point? xD

I don't know, I'm still waiting for that Tsukihime remake.tongue

Joking aside: it depends on what the core defining traits of a "vampire" are and whether those are sufficient to distinguish them from other supernatural beings, and that's tricky when it comes to mythology and folklore because of the many local / regional variations on the same theme. Taxonomy is complicated.

Shlugo: Atlantis didn't had any singing either. And if I recall correctly neither did Treasure Planet.

Treasure Planet had that song about Jim's daddy issues, but I'm pretty sure that was the only one.

Here's the opening narration of Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls:

"The beautiful country, our Great Japan. But! At times beauty is sinful. The foreign countries who grew envious of our Great Japan's beauty, thirsted for battle against our people, defiled our soil thousands of time. The invading army of demons approaches. The Great Japan's fate is like a small candle in the face of small wind. Do not worry. Don't be afraid. For in Great Japan...guardian deities do exist..."

-cues girls flying around and cutting down American bombers-

Ah, Japan. Staying classy as usual I see.

Japanese nationalism creeps me out sometimes. Thinking your country is the center of the world is one thing but it also carries tones of feeling like they were unjustly wronged and like the rest of the world is almost subhuman.

American nationalism also creeps me out sometimes. Though admitted there doesn't seem to be as much baked-in xenophobia and they get self-deprecating about it sometimes.

Yeah, I can see that. American nationalism kind of has this arrogant 'center of the world, better than everyone else, they just wish they were as great as us' mentality but it just doesn't have the same kind of hostility.

Well, politically and especially economically speaking, America really is at the center of the world. And frankly, I don't think that's a good thing but this is not the thread to discuss that.

Also, Americans would be also correct in saying that America is the most powerful nation in the world.

The topic seems to fascinate me. Like many other topics that fascinated me in the past, it probably wouldn't last long and I will move onto other one.

Like the cult of Cthulhu, for example.

I might not be expressing myself very well here, but that's what happens when you take a mindset that was already incredibly popular prior to World War II, and then gloss over the details of the war and its atrocities during history lessons and skip straight to the atomic bombs and post-war reconstruction. It just ends up perpetuating the same mindset in the next generation, only reinforced by extra shame and a desire to return to the "glory days".

Yeah, Japan only just recently apologies for their WWII crimes. It kind of sad that Japan's nationalism will kill the country.

I am creeped out by both American and Japanese nationalism, though Japanese nationalism creeps me out more because it seems a lot more normalized there.

I'm more disturbed by Japanese nationalism in comparison to that from American (which is still disturbing, just as not as much in relative terms). From what I've seen, there seems to be a bigger market and smaller number of critics.

Wait, hang on.

Hmm...can the likes of Independence Day, Top Gun, Modern Warfare series be called nationalistic in the same way works like Kancolle and Mahouka are?

If so, I guess it would be wrong to say that nationalism doesn't have sizable market in US.

I don't see what's so weird about that. People like things that make them feel good about themselves and nationalism does that, regardless of how little sense it makes.

Maybe, but I don't think it's a right thing to justify or ignore the horrible things you did to others, or even outright putting the blame on them. For example, I think it would be awful for a rapist to feel good about his/her sexual strength while putting the blame on the victim.

Wow, saying that actually put a bad taste in my mouth.

You know what, I'm going to drop this topic. Actually, sorry for bringing this up to begin with; it's not really a pleasant topic to talk about.

American Nationalism is also making it really hard for me to get into Marvel Comics. The Ultimate line has them very explicitly value American lives more, and they treat the American states being divided as far worse than mass casualties in other areas of the world.

I know there was an anime a few years back that had an opening parodying how unoriginal anime OPs are. I don't remember what it was called though because I only ever watched that OP.
