AFAIK EUL As have actually never been tested in court; the opinion I've come across is that they're almost certainly not enforceable in the EU — though of course I'm not a lawyer so don't take my word for it, and I have no idea what the position is in other jurisdictions.

Second, they already dont like hackintosh users....

I am just not paying 300% markup over polished aluminium, its there fault I built my own by charging so much....

BTW the 300% is conservitive, apple charges 300usd for a 60usd hard disk unit for example.

I think the markup is even higher in Ireland.

BTW guys I've been meaning to ask:

About updates, what's the situation on the System Service Exception BSO Ds that happen on AMD processor systems or what not? Is it still prevelant?

Sorry if I'm necro-ing, but I have a few doubts.

I've bought a new laptop and, considering that it has Windows 8.1, I see that they corrected a few things, but there are still some issues:

1 - Is there a way to put the "Start Menu" button that there was in bottom left corner, like it had in previous Windows (you know, the round one with their logo), in said former place?

2 - How do I start running without having to go through that app/tablet-like stuff at the beginning? I have a hard time in terms of dealing with it, especially since I'm not accustomed to it. If there's a way to relegating it to the deep end where it won't be touched or even deleting it, that'd be great.

If anyone knows how to do it or if you can provide me some links to solved issues, I'll thank you. A lot.

I know there's many 3rd party programs that brings back the traditional start menu, but you'll have to look for em. I'm still on Windows 7.

Make the start button round like it was before? Man, I feel old. IT WAS A RECTANGLE WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE. [lol]

[up] It was a rectangle right up to XP! (Okay, XP was a kind of rounded off rectangle, but it was still rectangular.) It wasn't until Vista that it became circular.

Switch to classic mode, and it's rectangular even up to Windows 7 (I don't have Windows 8 to test).

[up][up][up][up] I suppose so. Though I'm not sure about their reliability.

[up][up][up] / [up][up] I remember using those two, though I got used to Vista 6 years ago.

[up] In spite of being Windows 7, do you know how to switch to classic mode? Can you provide me a link?

For Windows 7: go to Control Panel, then Personalization. The options for various Windows themes are there.

You can also go the extra mile and shut down the Themes services altogether.

Is it true that Microsoft is already planning to introduce a new Windows soon because of the poor sales of Windows 8?

Yes, some time between october, of this year, and june of next year.

The start menu was already confirmed to return for it, looks like this in the dev build.

It looks nice, but it's still trying to appeal to the app crowd with that aesthetic.

In the meanwhile, I'll stick with Classic Shell, thank you very much.

Are they making sure it's fully usable without any touchscreens or other thingamajigs besides a keyboard and mouse, right out of the box (no fiddling)? And that its GUI is optimized for PCs and not tablets or smartphones, likewise right out of the box?

I think so, the previous CEO got fired, and by releasing so soon, they acknoladge windows 8.1 was a failure, and it would not be too hard to figure out WHY.

AFAIK: Windows 8 was yet another attempt to out-Apple Apple.

  • "Apps" that you could buy from the app store.
  • Touchscreen interface/shell
  • "Walled Garden" approach, only able to buy apps from the Windows app store...
  • ...going hand in hand with MS shifting to "apps" over programs.

And the epic fail that was:

  • The Curb-Stomp Battle that was Ipad/Droid vs. Surface and Windows RT
  • The outcry over "metro"
  • Apps not working, saving in different folders, not running, not leaving user files in a shape other programs could use.
  • Eating million of Windows Tablets that MS couldn't get rid out. They decided to become a hardware OEM when that's what the suck at.

Balmer and is "reality distortion field" gave us the Xbox One and Windows 8 was the PC version. Only the userbase gave him a big ole' Reality Ensues.

  • We don't want a closed system or "apps" we want programs
  • Metro/8 sucked on toast
  • the aftermarket for "classic shell" extenions.
  • Tablets are pretty much owned by Apple and Google/Droid.

So Microsoft let some people go, Balmer agreed to step down And There Was Much Rejoicing.

AFAIK: Windows 8 was yet another attempt to out-Apple Apple.

I'd say it went beyond even that. Even Apple keeps their desktop/laptop OS separate from their phone and tablet OS and ultimately I think that is where Microsoft first went wrong. All other issues stem from the decision to make a hybrid OS and as such it could never work properly for one or the other.

Seems Windows 8 was basically Vista 2.0

Now I sit and wait for Windows 7 2.0

Maybe they'll fix the Wifi on Windows 9 laptops so it doesn't keep nonsensically dropping if you're not in the exact same room as your router

Yeah I've heard of a lot of wifi issues with Windows 8. I upgraded to 8.1 solely so I could open straight to the desktop.
