I was kind of surprised how little it was mentioned that this was the first 9/11 since we got Osama.

That's because that was last year. He was killed in May of 2011.

I'm noticing we got a bunch of young'uns here. When I saw 9/11 if I were any older (I was bordering 16 at the time) I would have left immediately for the Army and into Afghanistan by 2002.

The way I felt, I'd still be there today even if it was my sixth or seventh tour in the war.

I wish I were there. More than just about anything, really.

Not because of politics, or because I'm a crazy war-puppy, but because my friends are still there.

My story?

I was in school, my Grandma was at the Doctor. She said she get me Pokemon Crystal from the store afterwards. Let's just say, it's pretty much the only time I was glad a store was sold out of a game I wanted. But enough about that.

I didn't hear about it until the Second Quarter. It was Math Class, they rushed us over to the Classroom next door, where a TV was at, and... Jeepers. We even tried to see who would try to attack us.

And Osama showed his face... AROUND LUNCHTIME! (No working TV in the Cafeteria.)

And it didn't help matters that we were moving at the time to a new house.

Just floating around...

I remember my teacher Mr Cairns very calmly informing us of the event in our first or second class of the day. No one got too upset, because unless someone in my class had family in New York I'm betting none of us knew what the World Trade Center was. I'd seen that episode of the Simpsons at least twice by that point and even I didn't know what it was. I do recall Mr Cairns saying the Palestinians had claimed responsibility, which I thought was weird until I saw Carlos The Jackal ten years later and realized would-be freedom-fighters will do anything to avoid being scooped by one another.

Anyway, I was a little preoccupied having a major stomachache, so I didn't really pay attention to the event until my mom came to pick me up from the office when I finally decided I was too sick to properly function. After that she gave me the rundown on everything she'd seen so far.

You know, thinking back, I think 9/11 is what killed the 90's.

To elaborate, the attitude during the 90's was "We are all awesome". Care free, relatively laid back, like basking in glory. Sure, the whole attitude had been declining for a line, but the incident acted as some kind of Memento Mori, where the US as a whole was reminded they are not invulnerable.

And boy, did they react badly to the news.

I was in first grade, and one of the things I remember is my teacher getting the phone call. Her face turned absolutely pale.

Then when my mom came to pick me up, she had to go through a bunch of red tape. We were on lockdown for most of the day—we didn't know who or what was going to be the next target.

[up] Where do you live?

The whole thing happened while I was in middle school. I remember having class as normal before it was rudely interrupted and someone rolled a TV in so we could see the things happening.

By the time we were aware of what happened both planes were crashed. Then it was business as usual. But I remember most kids being nervous about the whole thing. I remember being afraid someone would do something to San Diego (naval base and all) and that we would somehow feel the splash damage.

I was only 6 when it happened. I don't remember a fuss; my parents were a little bit shaken, but not really that affected.

Well, I'm Australian. That explains it.

Also, this video sums up my feelings about 9/11 pretty well. There is too much hype surrounding 9/11, especially considering many, many more people died in worse natural disasters that year. I acknowledge a lot of people died that day due to extremism, but it was not the worst event of the year, by far.

Come sail your ships around me, and burn your bridges down.
