I had been under the impression the Red Dawn remake was still in early production. Much to my surprise it is actually coming out this November.

One one hand, its North Korea invading the US, which is silly. On the other, they at least provided a reason why this was able to occur. On the third hand, this looks more like an action movie then the guerrilla survival movie the original one was. One the last hand, Thor is the main character.

Thoughts?

[up] The movie finished production at MGM ages ago. I guess it's nice to see that it's getting released at last, but I'll pass.

North Korea invading the US because of some superweapon they made when they are so poor they eat their own shoes? Random civilians succeeding where the army failed again? A bunch of CGI? Josh Peck as an action star? Yeah, no thanks. The original movie was silly enough, but this one appears to be going for a more Darker and Edgier approach. Which, if you know anything about how a military invasion like that would be conducted, is just impossible.

North Korea invading using an EMP weapon is straight out of Homefront. Which was written by the writer of Red Dawn, the original. I'll see this, if only for shits and giggles.

Its still non-sensical. Even if you could EMP the entire continental US, most military hardware is hardened against EMP effects, and you wouldn't catch most of the Navy, anyway. And frankly, even with no opposition at all, I don't buy North Korea being capable of shipping a single regiment all the way across the Atlantic, let alone an army big enough to hold even a single beachhead.

Obviously there's some sort of difference, like in the original Red Dawn. North Korea allying with Cuban-controlled Mexico?

The original enemy was supposed to be the Chinese but in order for the movie to be allowed in the Chinese movie market they obviously had to change it.

I'll only watch it if has North Korean flavored glurge.

As in the Wolverines fail to even hinder the invasion and in a few years North Korean civilians have moved into the suburbs of California, and many American citizens are placed into reservations in the mid west.

Sounds familiar? Yup that's the glurge.

I saw the trailer for this when I went to see Looper. It looks hilariously bad; I figured out what it had to be by halfway through the trailer and couldn't stop laughing.

Too bad they aren't being invaded by Panau while Thor fights them off.[lol]

Anywho... I don't know yet if I'll see this in the theater - depends on the reviews - but at the very least I'll put it in my Netflix queue.

Eh...the original premise was pretty silly too. Keeping the premise silly is in line with the first movie. Also, let's be honest; what nation has a legitimate chance of invading the US? Seriously, we spend more on military crap than the next ten nations combined. If someone tried that shit IRL they'd have Delta kicking in their leader's door about five hours later.

Yeah, but there's still degrees of dumb. At least Russia actually had both a navy and a functional foreign diplomacy, so moving an army to Mexico is *vaguely* conceivable, if you assume a lot of stuff had gone much worse for the US than historical. North Korea's "navy", by contrast, probably couldn't even reach the Americas, and the idea of them being able to convince any foreign government at all to host one of their armies is just plain laughable.

North Korea. Coming up with a technology of any kind that could take out US military.

As a South Korean, I find this idea so stupid it is actually hiliarious.

The whole Super Weapon thing leaves a sour taste. It feels like a Golden Snitch so the kids can defeat the Keystone Army. Which is kind of missing the point of the original film on how the whole resistance thing is destroying those kids.

[up][up] In the film it was actually the Russians who made the weapon... probably. It's mentioned that Russia helped the Norks, and it didn't explicitly say that the Norks built the weapon on their own.

So, I just saw this with some friends (it was their idea, not mine. Shut up). Yeah, this movie still exists. It was... not good, but slightly better than I thought it was going to be. Very slightly.

[up] The problem isn't China, it's movie producers who don't want to jeopardise potential markets.

I think they should have just made Russia the enemy again. Or hey, we're already in the realm of ridiculous, why not have England/Canada invade. That would be awesome.

Or why not just change it to the East Asian Union or something, with it left ambiguous which real world countries are supposed to be part of that union?

Actually at the beginning there was a brief mention of some sort of new military alliance in Asia that North Korea had joined. Though that the entire invasion was organized by the Russians and the fact that NK is just a convenient source of troops isn't revealed until later.
