Why do you say that "technically it's not a meme" if we call it a trope?
Because it implies that it's some form of archetype.
Which doesn't mean its name isn't a meme.
Oh I know there are tropes that are in essence memes, but this one in particular is also a character archetype. Unless of course you imply it is just a meme (to which I agree, there really is no character archetype that is a "Char Clone" outside of Gundam - most are just nitpicking and some are just physical attributes).
I'm inclined to think that every meme trope - not just Memetic Mutation - should require some form of citation.
I'd say the Gundam example is a of Stealth Pun rather than an Ascended Meme.
Exactly.
Actual ascended meme examples are like Futurama where they did reference the Fry face. Some feel more like it's limited to fansubs which IMO shouldn't count.
Bump.
At least, we should agree on posts like "we have this voice actor voicing a memetic/famous dialog in a panel/interview" not a meme.
That I can agree on. Someone doing it outside the series doesn't mean it's canon, and thus not ascended.
Check out my fanfiction!I'm going to bump this, I think the main problem is that the purpose of the trope is "a gag in the fandom gets acknowledged in the source" hence the connection with Ascended Fanboy. The trope is instead often being used for a generic "Memetic Shout-Out" where it doesn't matter where the meme came from.
And in truth I don't see too much of a difference between a gag being referenced in the original show and a comic-con panel that has the actors re-enacting the meme. It may not be in the original show but it is still being acknowledged by the people involved with it.
Weren't we renaming this "Canonized Meme"? What happened?
That Batman The Brave And The Bold example can't count as "ascended". It's referencing something that originated from the source material, not an internet meme. Even if said aspect of the source material has become a meme.

somethingBump. I removed the three examples the OP mentioned.
Should we remove the convention-related ones as well?
Pinball cleanup threadI say yes. Those only show creators and actors aware of the memes, not that they actually ascend into canon.
Check out my fanfiction!Maybe that deserves it's own trope then? Maybe "Aware Of The Meme"

And it should probably be Trivia, as it's mostly outside the show itself. This would most likely require this trope to be renamed to Canonized Meme to reduce confusion.
Pinball cleanup threadSounds good to me.
Laconic: "A Memetic Mutation that appears in the source material it was spawned from."
changed to:
"A Memetic Mutation that is acknowledged and referenced by the work it was spawned from."
How is that? The first was pretty vague, I mean, if a meme is spawned from a work, it could be a phrase that was used in the work and then parroted online as a meme. e.g. "All your base are belong to us." That would be a Memetic Mutation that appeared in the source material it was spawned from, but it definitely wouldn't be an example.

Evil is my favorite color.Well, I've decided to speed things up a little - namely by sorting examples into a sandbox page for Creator Meme Awareness and deleting those that don't fit into that or Ascended Meme.
EDIT: Finally finished sorting. There weren't too many misused ones, but eh.

Pinball cleanup threadThank you!
You're welcome.
Pinball cleanup threadIt looks really good. Do you want to take Creator Meme Awareness to YKTTW so that it can get approval of the community?
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.
Some of the examples aren't really an Ascended Meme.
Examples:
- Gundam
- Another Char related one, the character has an Expy in every Gundam series, and they have been referred to be fans as "Char Clones". The Gaia Gear novels, and later Gundam Unicorn, featured a character who was literally a clone of Char.
(this contradicts the idea that Char Clone is a trope - if it's a trope, then technically it's not a meme)- The first episode of Pokémon: Black and White takes two memes at once: Trip takes Snivy (Smugleaf) over Oshawott (Wotter), the least-liked of all the starters. Oshawott is very hurt and surprised to learn this.
(this doesn't really make it an ascended meme as it is more of a typical scene of The Rival picking a strong looking Pokemon)- Batman The Brave And The Bold features someone having done a Grand Theft Me on Batman walking around going "I'm Batman."
(this isn't really an ascended meme as it is more of a catchphrase)Also entries like having a voice actor voicing a line in a panel isn't really an ascended meme since it doesn't really appear in the medium.
Seems like people confuse certain coincidences as ascension of memes.
