Youtube recommendations are a... mixed bag to say the least.

Don't get me wrong, they can work brilliantly. There's nothing better than that moment when you get recommended a video/channel you loved from ages ago that you had forgotten about. Plus, I actually like how you'll sometimes get recommendations from obscure/little viewed videos. It's a nice way of getting views towards videos and channels that might have otherwise missed out, though I can see why some people are annoyed by these sort of recommendations (even if I disagree).

By the same token, Youtube likes to overcompensate. "Oh you watched one video on this topic, lets flood your homepage with it". "Oh you like this thing, here's 20 videos saying its shit." "Oh, you are a fan of this show, he's videos with spoilers and leaks in the thumbnail" (though, TBF, for this one I imagine it would be quite hard to control).

[up]Yeah. The site doesn’t seem to understand that it’s not always the comtent itself was the reason I clicked on the video but the creator. Or it’ll recommend me comtent that barely resembles what I’m looking for.

It's even worse when you're looking up reviews of a show and you keep seeing videos about how 'This show/company has gone woke/DESRTOYED a franchise because they made a WOMAN a main character'.

Unfortunately, I've been seeing those types of videos lately in my feeds, despite the fact that I don't subscribe to the channels that always have these "Oh, a Franchise is ruined because it's WOKE" videos.

I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!

MCU and Star Wars suffer it often.

I used to watch Thorias Unlimited videos when Batwoman was on its third and final season just to watch him have a meltdown (and to see if his points had any merit or were purely hyperbolic).

Suffice to say once Batwoman ended I never watched another one of his videos and it took half a year for Youtube to stop pitching similar content - Jesse Grant, nerdrotic, etc. Hard no's. They were all cut from the same vitriolic cloth.

Putting WOKE in the thumbnail gets clicks.

I might not like some MCU movies but every week seeing a viddeo with "MCU writer has a minor disagreement over coffee order/PROVES MCU IS OVER AND MARVEL HAS FAILED FOREVER" was an interesting experience.

[up] As long as the youtuber exaggerates their video title then it gets clicks and that’s all that matters.

The issue with the algorithm is that it only sees the topic of the video but doesn’t understand the context.

Example: You just watched a Spider-Man Iceberg video? Now the algorithm will recommend you people like The Quartering or Nerdrotic complaining about Miles Morales being Spider-Man.

It’s even worse if you watched a political video, because now you’ll get recommended alt right propaganda.

And someone last page mentioned how watching a game trailer made the algorithm recommend people who dislike modern Nintendo.

You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!

I just ran into this the other day. I recently watched a documentary about a football school's NCAA scandal, and the algorithm was like "Want to watch a video from that school?"

...You took the wrong message from what I watched, Youtube.

Algorithm is very fickle too. Like I remember that I used to watch railway videos to relax so I get a lot of those, but then suddenly it stopped being recommended because I watched on topic that had more "reach" (video games) that I almost forgot seeing them in recommendations.

It's why sometimes I just subscribe.

[up] Yeah. Like some things in the algorithm stick for a while regardless of how much you watched them while a lot of content you have to watch constantly to even have a chance for it to be recommended again.

Is Youtube streaming really laggy for anyone else lately? Even turning down the quality doesn't seem to effect it much.

Just regular video uploads work fine. And I don't seem to have any problem with streams on Twitch.

I got this ad on Hero Wars, some mobile game. It involved some pint-sized manly-man boiling two minotaur amazon women in a big bath tub, then being locked up in a dungeon by more angry minotaur amazons, then the guy being tortured by demons who farted in his face, then the guy apparently enslaving/recruiting an amazon minotaur and going on some quest... it's one of those dorky numbers games, but man, I haven't seen one with content this suggestive before.

Who plays this shit, and why does Google keep showing it to me? I sure hope it isn't showing this borderline softcore shit to children...

Bear in mind that we're talking about two very different questions.

  1. Why would a game publisher exploit the sex drives of maladapted men to sell its presumably predatorily monetized mobile game? I think we know the answer. Let's bust out the fishing rod and hook a few whales.
  2. More importantly, why would Google accept such an ad and show it to general audiences? That's the real mystery. Especially when it would flag a page displaying those images on a site like ours.

Here is the video if you're interested:

It does mention that these fake videos are also made to generate views for the games they are selling. Question is, again, why is Google tolerating these predatory ads?

These ads are all over the place about their messaging. Some are clearly preying on kinks, while others are doing the exact opposite and preying on kink-shamers. I guess they try to cover the whole political spectrum that way, or something.

Also, some of those are Actually Pretty Funny in isolation because of how bizarre/surreal they get.

In one ad, a fake youtuber is "playing" the mobile game being advertised on a clearly empty phone case. That one has to be the best dumb ad in that video. grin

And the prize for most ghoulish ad for home redecorating game goes to... "Oh, I accidentally put the baby in the washing machine instead of the laundry... Oh well, guess it's time to redecorate the baby room, then!" Who is this supposed to appeal to?? Really?

I haven't seen too many pervy ads. Which given my search history is surprising. I know they exist due to the R/Youtube subreddit pointing out the weird ones.

Not a fan of the ball deoderant and the vaginex ones, between Ryan Reybold trying to sell me an app.
