Calling crowner in favor of renaming. Please brainstorm some alternative titles.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Sidekick In Chief? Underling Chessmaster? A Friend Behind The Man? ok, the last one is the snowclone so maybe has to be reworded. But it's closest of all to the trope as I understand it.

You didn't see anything.Bump. Are there any ideas for the new name?
You didn't see anything.Sidekick in Chief works for me.
Hooked an empty alt titles crowner. Add options, please.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI lke Sidekick in Chief because it reflects the paradox of the trope; the sidekick is the one in charge despite being a sidekick. The other two sound like snowsclones and subtropes. The 'magnificent' sounds like it will attractive 'impressive sidekick' misuse
Sidekick In Chief is a snowclone of Dragon-in-Chief, Magnificent Sidekick is snowclone if Magnificent Bastard. I think that Sidekick In Chief misses what this trope is really about. Magnificent Sidekick matches this trope but one would have to read Magnificent Bastard to know what magnificent is.
The laconic is "A subservient Chessmaster."
I think Sidekicking Chessmaster is the best one so far.

"X-in-Chief" is a standard formula that long predates Dragon-in-Chief. There's no snowcloning going on there. That's just standard English production.
I do agree that Magnificent Sidekick does seem somewhat snowclonish, but I don't think you need to read that trope to know what "magnificent" means. Any dictionary should provide that information.
That said, while Sidekicking Chessmaster is a bizarre and slightly grotesque use of the word(?) "sidekicking", something along those lines could work. Like maybe Chessmaster Sidekick. I could go for that.

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.I also think Sidekick In Chief is a bad name, as it implies that the Sidekick is the one running the show without much regard for the leader, which is much closer to Hypercompetent Sidekick.
The current name leader(Sidekick In Chief) doesn't say anything about the sidekick being a chessmaster, or that he is using plans at all.
The laconic is "A subservient Chessmaster."
Have you guys read the description?
The Puss in Boots is a master of these tactics who could easily overthrow his or her boss, but who remains fiercely loyal to said boss, for diverse reasons. This counts double if the master of the Puss in Boots is a Badass or a Strategist in his own right. In this case, the Puss in Boots is an Infinity Plus One Tactician.
If the boss is an idiot or otherwise incompetent, this overlaps with Hypercompetent Sidekick. See also Battle Butler, Sidekick Ex Machina and Guardian Entity.

I like Chessmaster Sidekick. It explains precisely what the trope is — a specific type of Hypercompetent Sidekick whose particular strength is in putting together plans and manipulations rather than, say, being a tech genius, a kung-fu master, or a competent business manager.
