Does anyone here think Bill wasn't the original ruler of the Nightmare Realm? And that he gained his position by usurping the previous one?

Yep. And that someone is Tad Strange, whom Bill then subjected to the most Ironic Hell possible by turning him into the most loathesome of all things: A normal guy.

Well, now that I know that Bill was an usurper I like him even more.

Althought I want to know who was (if there was) the former ruler.

I just checked the Journal and I didn't see anything about a former ruler (though Axolotl appears to be some sort of deity for the multiverse) but it does say that the Nightmare Realm and Bill's home dimension are two different places leading me to believe that he straight up destroyed his home dimension rather than take it over and given the description of the Nightmare Realm given in the book, I find it hard to believe that it had a ruler before Bill showed up.

Well, now we know what Alex Hirsch's next project might be: writing a movie based off some obscure franchise you're likely never heard of.

Just a person. He/him.

This is good news (unless the studio execs are dumb enough to meddle with the script), but I'm now curious how this'll affect his upcoming Fox series.

Live action? And as in, writing the dub, or is this going to originate in English?

Probably originate in English. Legendary's made live action English language adaptations of Japanese works before (ex: Godzilla).

For someone who was burnt out on their last project Alex sure has been busy lining up stuff that'll probably keep him sleepless for the next seven years at least.

Good for him nonetheless.

So, half a year later, I finally decided to watch the series finale.

It was pretty damn good. Exciting and gave closure to all of the major characters. Favorite moments were the Mystery Shack vs Bill's minions, and Stan's final confrontation with Bill. After Bill's defeat, the episode takes ten more minutes to wrap up. It felt kind of drag ass, but given how much the show meant to the fans, I can understand wanting to make sure every character gets a proper send off. It was great to see Stan and Ford patch up their relationship, and even fulfill their childhood dream. One issue I had with it is Stan getting his memories back. I realize that it would really, really suck for him to lose all memories of his family, but the way they did it felt too easy. It would've been better if a more specific method of restoration had been established earlier in the story and they had used that instead.

And yet, as good as the finale was overall, I couldn't shake the feeling that the show could've been more than it was. Part of the reason I put off watching the end for so long is because I was somewhat disappointed that the story turned out much simpler than I thought it would. I thought that maybe my expectations were just too high, but I had an interesting conversation with someone on Youtube where I learned that there really were a lot plot threads that never came to fruition, as well as the fact that Alex ended the season prematurely not just because he didn't think he needed another season, but because he was burned out on doing the show. It'll be interesting to see if Hirsch's future projects achieve the kind of acclaim Gravity Falls had, but I'm hoping they won't unravel the way this show did.

Mabel is a case where I put more blame on the writers than I do on the character. I like Mabel and I think she had a good foundation, but there were a lot of problems with how her character development was handled, and I'm not the least bit surprised that she turned out to be so controversial. Sorry Mabel fans, but I'm with PieGuyRulz and JelloApocalypse on this one.

I think the problem there is that the show, while it does often indulge in dark/edgy comedy, is still generally sympathetic to the kinds of dilemmas a kid or adolescent might have, and often aims to help kids overcome and learn from them. There's a discrepancy between that, and giving No Sympathy to a kid who's forced to accept his role as his social circle's laughing stock and not being respected by his friend. In a different episode of this very show, that could have been the main dramatic point, so it rubs me the wrong way to have it treated as a joke.

That may be illustrative of what I view as one of the main overriding flaws of Gravity Falls — that its stabs at gooey sentimentalism and lesson-learning aren't always a great fit for its edgy/irreverent sense of humour. You can have both, but it's a fine balancing act, and I feel like this show was not at its strongest when it needed to balance the two.

Great post, I totally get where you're coming from.

Hirsch did not end the season prematurely. He actually extended it and decided not to do a Season 3.

Poor phrasing. What I meant is that he scaled down the scope of the series, and the result of that is that certain plot points ended up being brushed aside.

Well at least you say Mabel's development was kind of flawed instead of accusing her of being a Mary Sue or whatever.

Seriously, why do people have to get so extreme with their opinions?

[up][up][up]Given the stuff that's been revealed since the end, I'm unsure if the series was meant to have that big of a scope in the first place. It was mostly about one set of Pines twins coming of age, and the other set reconciling. Everything else was likely ancillary at best.
