Alrighty, so (this is totally going to sound pretentious), I'm writing a rock opera that is mostly centered around a folk punk band, and I'm realizing that pretty much the only folk punk music I've ever heard as far as I can remember is the Violent Femmes. Can anyone give me some recommendations of good starting points so I can fully understand the genre?

Would Celtic Punk technically count?

I should think so.

For some reason I really want to recommend Richard Youngs here—particularly the abum 20 Years that he did with Simon Wickham-Smith—but that's a little more experimental than what I think you're looking for. (Especially considering that the first disc is just straight-up noise, even if the rest of the album is more typical of Youngs' more song-oriented output.)

Well, there's Flogging Molly of course... also, the Levellers, of whom I'm quite fond myself:

(This song was made in 1990; it has quite Anvilicious lyrics about how the Thatcher governments ruined the country).

The Spanish punk band Boikot also seem fond of folk influences: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvW_2IvDtzI (this is a medley: first the Spanish translation of the Italian Resistenza battle hymn "Bella Ciao", then the song "No Pasarán" from the Spanish Civil War).

Gogol Bordello is the most obvious one that has still gone unmentioned. Start Wearing Purple, Immigraniada, When Universes Collide, and American Wedding are all excellent starting points. The band is a great fusion of Eastern European Folk and Punk.

Unfortunately, I fail at embedding. :(

Mischief Brew has a lot of acousticky punk stuff. For a good starter song, check out Devil of a Time.

I shall embed Gogol Bordello on behalf of Cthulboohoo, cuz I can:

I personally only know a few songs of theirs, and ought to get into them sometime.

Trans-Continental Hustle was my favorite album om 2010 and a great starting point.

Sorry I haven't gotten the chance to listen to any of all this yet. Finals week drains ya, I tells ya. Probably by Wednesday night I'll have time to check this all out. Really appreciate the suggestions.
