Should we split it? It seems that half of the examples have a prohibition on procreation (and procreative sex) while the other half is the complete opposite (like the page quote, procreation only, and only if we can't find a way around that too).

An argument for the split is that the ideology behind is completely different too: The former is usually for Population Control due to low resources, while the latter is used by dystopias, religions and Bee People.

Those are very different, yes. Independent tropes.

We already have Population Control, which covers the "no procreation" one. We could just move those examples to Population Control, and leave No Sex Allowed with the dystopian ones. Which is what I think of when I hear that trope name anyways.

Belief or disbelief rests with you.

Note that the trope has apparently become No Real Life Examples Please while we weren't looking.

[up]I agree, could just move those examples.

Clocking due to lack of activity.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.

I cleaned up the real life section, (though it wasn't too bad in the first place) can I put it back?

    Real Life
  • Christianity:
    • Catholic priests. Interestingly, it wasn't always this way; early on, they were allowed to have sex (ideally, in the context of marriage and for the express purpose of procreation). But when Nepotism became a problem (take, for example, the infamous Borgia family), the rule was changed so that priests were to be "married" to the Church (so that priests were getting their position based on merit, not on family connections).
    • The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, aka Shakers, who ban sex even for reproduction. Shaker communities were organized around simple, gender-segregated (but equal), communal living. Daily life revolving around prayer, farmwork, and the creation and sale of high quality furniture & crafts that the group is still famous for even today. They lasted over two hundred years without the inclusion of sex by adopting orphans in substantial numbers; these children were given a safe place to live and upon adulthood were allowed to either stay in the community or leave; many who left were those unwilling to remain celibate forever. The group’s numbers dwindled in the 19th century due to urbanization, mass production, and the rise of state adoption agencies and the limitation and eventual outlaw of religious groups adopting children. As of 2011 only three Shaker members remain.
    • The Knights Templar (the group, not the trope) had to refrain from women completely as "warriors of Christ", even going so far as to demand to be buried in male-only cemeteries.
  • In Islam and Judaism, sex within marriage for reproduction and strengthening the marriage is celebrated, but both religions have sub-groups which are so worried about sexual sin outside of those boundaries that adult males are constantly segregated by gender.
  • Among Hasidic Jews, the separation is so extreme that even newly-married couples will dance with each other separated by a length of cloth; Muhammed Attah, the ring-leader of the attackers of 9/11, left a note demanding that even his corpse not be touched by a woman.
  • A variant in some forms of Islam: anal sex, homosexuality, and sex during menstruation is not allowed, ever. Every other position and/or method is fair game.
  • The laws of many countries forbid sex until a certain age. Some allow it as long as the minors are within 3 years of age to one another.
  • Some domesticated animals, such as turkeys and bulldogs, have been selectively bred for such extreme quirks of anatomy that they are either physically incapable of mating, or incapable of giving birth without surgical intervention. Only artificial insemination and C-sections have kept these animals around.
  • Chemical castration of male sex offenders is intended to render them physiologically incapable of arousal or ejaculation. Sadly, this can be subverted if the offender takes androgens, or if he reoffends via object-rape, groping, etc. Others switch from rape to aggravated assault/murder after being chemically castrated.

I don't think the underage part counts as the trope. Including it on a trope page about a Dystopian Edict carried bad implications. Plus, there is no "for reproduction only" clause there.

Also, if you mention the Christian church, you could mention that this trope was the official stance of the Roman Catholic Church at least as late as 1990 (and probably much later), with the Pope himself calling condoms sinful.

Edit: Ninja'd.
